800 Miles in DEATHTRAP Ford Station Wagon! Will It Drive to the Beach?

  • Its time to try and drive this 1960 Ford Country Sedan station wagon to the ocean so that Jess can see the beach for the first time ever. Will it make it? Will we even survive? This was truly a vacation from hell. One thing that made it better was getting to visit ‪@OutontheRanchwithDrLee-xb4lo‬ - to say I owe that man a great deal would be an understatement.

@@PoleBarnGarage I'm not a pretentious Jackass. I'm a motor mechanic and former garage owner who suffers watching you needless wreck cars.
For example, you could have simply Googled: 'how do I fix vacuum wipers?', or you could have purchased the suspension bushes you needed before you left. Or, if you couldn't find the correct bushes, the companies that make the bushes usually allow you to browse by size, which would probably have worked.
I get that breakdowns, etc, are part of the fun, but there are enough real catastrophes that you can't avoid, without needlessly creating problems for yourself.
In every relationship, you get back what you put in. If you treated your wife the way you treat your cars, you would soon be sleeping alone.

Some years before Dad gave it to me, the '59 "Squarebird" was our family car. It had those Gawd-awful vacuum wipers too. We climbed Pike's Peak in that thing, in the days when the roads were barely a lane wide, and had nothing or only pathetic protection from the cliffs off the side of the road. They always seemed to be on the passenger side, where Mom was pissing herself in terror. The more the 352 motor struggled lugging up the hill, the more ridiculously sluggish the wipers were, and the harder it rained. How Dad got that thing up there and back without us all dying is a testament to the Man he was.

Pull the hose off of the vacuum wiper motor source, stick it into a container of ATF and work the wiper arms back and forth a few times or ten. Draws ATF into the vacuum motor and softens up the old grease...let it sit overnight, hook it back up and your wipers will work good-ish again!

The funny thing is is that Dalton knew the kind of road trip he was going on and still put off crucial repairs for convenience and laziness. The whole time, I was laughing and laughing because a lot of the issues could've been avoided. As a 30+ years mechanic, I was shocked at the ill preparation in making sure that it could make the trip successfully. You are one brave person on taking these chances of ill prepping a road trip. The videos are very entertaining though! I love 💕 Pole Barn, never a dull moment. Anyways, thanks for the video 📸.

When I was a kid, we had an old 1959 Chevy Apache 32 pickup truck with vacuum wipers. When you coasted, they'd go so fast I was sure the blades would just fly off. When the engine was under load, they'd stop. You had to let off the throttle for a second to let the wipers sweep, then get back on the gas before you lost too much speed (the truck had a 235 L6 with a three on the tree, so losing momentum was borderline tragic).

Those vacuum wipers gave me flashbacks of my first car, a 1968 AMC Javelin. I bought it in 1985 for $300 from my brother. The faster you drove, the slower the wipers went. That's not good when you're from Seattle. It had an auxiliary vacuum pump on top of the fuel pump, but the diaphragm was apparently blown.

Had pulled the thermostat cover at an O Reillys and found there was not one. So after dark in the cool air we drove all through the night at 55 with the heat on full blast. had to put a blanket over my feet to keep from burning them. She ran right at the red the whole way, Made it home around 9am. Never had a leak but the next day went to pull the Rad and it came apart in my hands. Heater core as a supplemental Rad works well. Hey, great content. Keep up the good work.
I'll tell ya an old racing secret. Before you install your next water pump, cut half the impellers off.
To keep it balanced cut off every other blade, then skip one, cut the next, skip one. You get the idea.
You should have 4 blades instead of 8.
This slows down the rate at which the water passes through the rad. Water spends more time in
the rad thus running cooler. 😉

Wow at 57:38 that airport you passed in Lampasas texas. My father used to run a aircraft maintenance shop there in 2006. Didnt last long. We moved away from texas. I have never been back to texas since. My dad passed away in 2022. Seeing that airport brought back so many memories. Used to run my Camaro and motorcycle down that runway.

The heart of the problem is the RPM.....3,300 RPM is still way to high to keep that engine temp in the safe zone. The gearing needs to bring it closer to 2,000 RPM on the highway and the overheating issue would disappear.
