Prices for the 830 on Black Friday 2023 became and have since remained relatively low. Your informative and even-handed review here pushed me over the edge so to speak, and I'm going to go with the elder model. Thanks!
Wow! Audio quality and production have massively increased over the past year! Just watched your should you buy the 830 in 2023, keep up the great work!
As an software engineer, I must say that I'm (very) disappointed with Garmin. There is some software updates that could be in Edge 830 if they want to. Better ClimbPro is one of those. There is very needed improvements on navigation about cues texts max lenght too. In my humble opinion, as a piece of hardware so expensive that must last so much years, is important to keep it getting good improvements instead just bugfixes. Off course, if you will buy a Garmin Edge for the first time, get the latest version, but upgrade to new versions every launch, isn't viable unless you are very health about money.
You should mention memory capacity. The 830 has 16GB where the 840 has 32GB. 16GB is not enough to load both US and EU maps at the same time, so when traveling it requires deleting map files in base directory of the unit (requires a PC) and loading new region maps before traveling. Then doing same on return. I only travel a couple of times each year, but it’s a pain. Cheers.
Thanks. I’ve read your blog for about 10 years! I’m using a GoPro 5 with a mouth mount (pro standard grill mount). I plan to buy a newer GoPro to improve the image quality and stability.
@Sportivecyclist Mouth mount? I thought, there's another example of your witty humor, and this time the joke's on me. But no, I bit and a quick search showed it's an actual thing. What you'll do to inform and entertain has no bounds. Thanks. Keep rolling! And thanks for reading my reviews.
I like my 830 but its not without its hiccups. The screen goes bananas in the rain, the climb pro can go out of sync, and the live strava segments seem to work only when they want to, but I will stick with it for now. I do like the idea of some extra physical buttons though!
Thank you for the comparative review! I have a question: does the 840 have the same mount compatibility as the 830 i.e. can you put both computers on the same mount? Thank you!
Can Garmin 840 change the displayed windows while driving using buttons or only by touch? The description says that also the buttons work, but do they work in all functions?
I might have missed it, did you mention that the 840 has twice the internal memory of the 830? The Garmin maps are supposed to require quite a bit more memory with all the Climb Pro info that's now included.
Great video man. Had everything I needed for my valuation. While it might no be great for your total view duration time, it would have been great for us watchers to have the video timestamped
You all better go for the 1040! More space for data fields, better visibility for both, reading data fields and navigation. And the battery running time is better.
No 840. You get buttons as well as touchscreen. Same software and loads cheaper. The average rider doesn’t need the long battery power, you can get a power pack if you do. The 840 is the ultimate sweet spot.

Thanks for the comparison, TBH I can't find a good reason to upgrade my trusty 530!
Very informative; even more entertaining. What setup are you using to get those great action shots of the 830 and 840 on your bars? Thanks.

Hi there - yes, absolutely. All Garmin bike computers, new and old (at least for the last 15 years of my memory) use the same mount design.
@@Sportivecyclist awesome! Thanks!

lol this dude is funny af. very informative! thanks.
Thanks for the review!
Can I use strava segments while following a route on the 840?
Solar models have very dim screens compared to non-solar models….
Which one is better for Mtb ?
Are the new training features of the 840 worth to upgrade?

I know this is kind of out of the topic, but im kinda stuck to choose between garmin edge 830 or bolt v2, which ones better?
my 830 is vergy buggy software wise, would like to get rid of it.
Where can you buy Dawes bikes that good? What do you do for your lower aerobic stuff walking?
Thanks! 😊
I do do a lot of walking due to the presence of a dog. I am not sure how aerobic it is!
