      We love it here. I'm just north of Portland. I'd love to do a long multi-day ride down the 101 but we'll see. There's a lot to explore out here. The next video that I have planned is the 540 vs Bolt V2. But I think the main difference you'd notice with the Karoo 2 would be battery life and size and weight. If you're considering the Karoo 2, I'd probably start wondering about Karoo 3 timeframes. I don't know anything but the Karoo 2 is getting a bit old and a multi-band GPS chip would be nice to have in here because it has better power use optimizations. Thanks Struan Mills!!!

    My question for you what does integration look like between your Apple Watch and garmin 840? If I don’t have a garmin watch do I still get the garmin benefits or am I better off with a wahoo? Just found channel. Thanks for the info and advice. Looking at a new cycling computer for CX/ mixed surface rides, roads to trails, as my cateye stealth evo gps tracking is going out. So I am looking at new cycling computer after many years. New to the live mapping computers. Agree the 840 is too much and on touchscreen can issues when wet you said in another RUclips post on the new Garmins. Went to college in the redwoods so have a little experience with rain and touchscreen plus lacking sunlight for weeks on end. Split between lezyne mega xl , wahoo bolt 2, and Garmin 540/840 as I have sensors already. Hammond has power- battery use issues. So down to 3 or 4 computers to choose from. Trying to pick the best choice.

      @Matt LeGrand 530 on sale £200 Bolt available for £249 at the moment. Been lucky enough borrow a friends 530 to try. Seems ok has everything I need,miss the ease of set up. But once it's set up all good. Screen is OK but have seen it next to a v2 and makes it look very poor. Got a few weeks before I need buy so hopefully Wahoo bring an update out which everyone keeps talking about on the v2. Cheers for the reply.

      @Matt LeGrand ended up going for the 530, due to battery life. So far so good, screen is ok(wahoo better) syncs quicker than wahoo(need open the app 1st to connect phone) garmin does it Auto which helps when on the commute as phone is always packed away 1st. Getting use to swapping screen takes a bit of practice. Only took a few days, mapping is OK. Lots of data to play with and was £200 so cheaper than the Wahoo.

    hi I have a doubt, about stamina, can you use this feature without power meter? I did not find this information, I think the watches do not have it, nor the Garmin site has this information, it would be important, because 540 is already expensive, if you need power meter, then it is not viable to buy, I wanted to use stamina and climing pro, thanks man

      It needs to base that fatigue details on something. I think it can just use heart rate but I don’t think I’ve tested that. Many of Garmin’s new watches have the same Stamina feature. Unfortunately, the strava live segments are almost useless if you want to keep your rides private. What I mean is that you cannot race your own PRs. After contacting Garmin they sad that not being able to access your PR on your device that actually recorded it is a feature, not a bug. 😞

      @@mlegrand No, no miscommunication. Let me quote Garmin support email: "Unfortunately it is by design that private activities do not show up in the segments". And when I asked for this to be fixed: "Unfortunately after talking with engineering this is by design and unlikely to be changed anytime soon."

    Just upgraded from a 520 to the 540 but not liking it so far.
    My biggest pain point (besides the hard to press buttons and non-intuitive interface) is that the 540 does not automatically power down after disconnecting from the charging cable.
    With my 520, once I removed it from charging it gave me a 15-second auto power off countdown and then turned itself off.
    With the 540 lacking this Auto Power Down feature requires me to perform an additional 3-clicks of hard to press buttons to power it down. WHY?
    This is so annoying. From what I've discovered online, this feature was removed starting with the 530 and users were pissed off then. Now it's carried forward to the 540.
    Why would Garmin not include an auto power down feature after charging? If I take a turned OFF device and plug it to charge (which it then turns on) and then its completely charged and removed from the charger, it should return to its OFF state. That is only LOGICAL.
    I can see how lacking this feature its possible to forget to power it down manually and then wake up the next day with a dead device that remained on all night.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  27 дней назад

      Yeah, that's super frustrating. I find it odd that this 540's UI is so oddly not button friendly. It's like it was 100% designed for touch screen and then they were told at the last second to "make it kind of work for buttons" and then removed the touch screen. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

    The units/cassettes look was really pleasing!
    I haven't bought a head unit for a long time, but I swear the 1030 cost $550 MSRP when I bought it. Now the smaller 840 costs that??? Wooooof. This sport is getting more expensive!
    Do people ever tease you for having three or four computers mounted at one time?
    MORE DRONE MORE DRONE STUFF!!!
    The graphics on the measuring part is absolutely killer.
    The size comparison is a nice touch. Great work improving it.
    IS "CHAPTER TWO" a Jurassic Park font!??? That's incredible.
    The Cycling Ability bit... I saw what you edited in there "You suck as a cyclist." Made me laugh!
    Do you think it is a noticeable difference in production costs to make a device with no buttons versus buttons?
    DC showed the solar is a little big of a gimmick. I support your recommendations!
    Oooooooooooooooooooooooohhh, wireless charging!
    Oh my gosh, yes on replacing batteries. That would be incredible! Half I reason I never use my head unit is because I'm saving it! I know, that's a stupid explanation, but I stay by it!
    The out front mounts look sooooooooooooo coool.

    Adding two "wishes" into the "What I wish were different" section:
    - First the easy and cheap to do. Reduce the size and amount of branding on the devices! We already paid the hardware, no need to also advertise the brand all the time (or pay us to do it!). This applies to Garmin and most other brands also. Running shoes brands are even worse... Most cars have less exterior logos than most running shoes! C'mon just reduce slightly the branding size, it will even get a more premium look and overall better aesthetic.
    - Second the not so easy to do. Having square corners in the displays, when the device itself has round corners. I understand the technical constraints and budget issues, but it's up to their design and engineering teams to find a solution for it (if needed keep the square corner but add a very small mask on top of it). Looks like inserting a square in the round shape... just because it's possible doesn't make it right.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  Год назад +2

      These are great recommendations. I used to tape over the branding on my bike computers and I still do on my camera. I don't get paid by Garmin so why should I be advertising for them. @@mlegrand It took me literally a entire evening to get the computer set up. It is not as intuitive as I thought it would be. Some things from Garmin Connect Sync'd but eliminating most of the baked in data screens was a chore. Setting up the data screens, which I typically needed 4 screens, was a nightmare. And one common complaint from people who left reviews on the Ride With GPS instructions site had the same issue I had where I couldn't get the thing to pair and kept giving me an ERROR 2 result. I never gave up and got things sorted finally. I like the appearance of the screens better than the 830. During setup it seemed to me the battery was losing charge pretty quickly, I hope that isn't the case when I get to do a ride. And it seemed to take a long time to get to 100%. I still have a ways to go to find out what navigation is like on the fly, it was nearly impossible on the 830. IMO this bike computer does way more than a cyclist needs and could be a potential danger if you take your focus away from the road to play with all that functionality.
