I come from an average middle class family, no one known or did anything notable. I was born in early 50's and I don't know of any friends or anyone for that matter I've gotten to know in my life who didn't come from a dysfunctional family with some or all forms of abuse, including my own; it's quite common unfortunately. So if you think your family was jinxed or unusual that there was alcoholism, verbal, physical, sexual abuse, suicide, etc. because your previous relatives or your grandfather was a known, famous writer, then you're wrong. I grew up petrified living in the same house with my bipolar dad and sister, mom looked away, ignored it all, wouldn't protect me. She became severely depressed, closed off, a shell of her younger self, it caused her many health issues she died from. My dad died 18 years after her, and I'm still scared of him. Finally blocked my sister out of my life 25 yrs ago such a relief, with the help of a therapist, but with the dam internet tracking everyone, she found me, and I'm NOT on any social media, no accounts ever. I don't bank or pay any utilities online, seems you move, new address is automatically on the internet somehow, we're all tracked. I didn't even give Post Office a forwarding address. Don't use a cell either, landline only and number I was told would be private. NOTHING is private anymore due to the internet. I HATE the internet (weeks go by at times without getting on it), if it were shut down tomorrow I'd celebrate,. So now I'm filled with anxiety, anger and depression again, after good, happy years of only living in the present and future, now she's brought the past back. Life is difficult, too many of us had/have crazy, hurtful, abusive family members in our childhoods that marked us for life, even though we chose to move on, it still comes back, no choice of ours. Mental illness and family abuse what goes on behind "closed doors", sadly, will never ever be able to be controlled, there are too many of them, the news media in all forms, shows us that everyday.

Exactly! No one but you can love you the way you need to be loved except yourself! Thank you, MarielHemingway, for stating that! It is oneself, who can rescue you and not some crap like Jesus!

When you are sick and suffering, you can easily believe you are your own god. When your health leaves you, though, and mortality reminds you that you are not alone, perspectives often shift. Mariel is young and appears to still have her mental and medical health ... for now.

This sounds good but I don't believe it to be true. I think she doesn't want to need anyone.

I agree. I also think she may run to a man believing that he has all the answers.
