  • We continue our cycle tour on EuroVelo 15 up the Rhine from Remagen (just south of Bonn) through the beautiful Rhine Gorge and on to the city of Karlsruhe, close to the border with France. We're on a quest to cycle from the North Sea to the Adriatic via EV 15, EV 6 and the Cyclovia Alpe Adria Radweg.
    This episode has some great scenery and some interesting searches for campgrounds and hotels!
    Don't miss "Retro Night" in the city of Speyer!
    Useful Resources:
    For EuroVelo 15 we used the Cicerone book "The Rhine Cycle Route" by Mike Wells and found it very useful. It has detailed maps and interesting background information too. The maps were particularly useful when the trail signage wasn't enough. I have used some of these maps in this video series.
    The official EuroVelo website is another handy resource of course, and for those using GPS navigation, it provides gpx files for the various routes. en.eurovelo.com/#routes-and-c...
    For navigation, we did not use any high-tech GPS systems, relying instead on route signage, the book "The Rhine Cycle Route" (Kindle version) and a useful free overview map of EV 15 that I picked up in a tourist office. For other route-finding to campgrounds, grocery shops, etc, we used the Maps.Me phone application which you can use offline.
    We did not have local phone sim cards so our use of Google maps and other online resources was limited to when we had wifi access at campgrounds, grocery shops and restaurants.
    Music from both RUclips Audio Library and Epidemic Sound
    0:00 Intro and overall itinerary and route maps
    2:20 Cycle resumes Day 12 Remagen to Koblenz, pretty Rhine Gorge begins, castles and vineyards
    11:42 Day 13 We reach Bacharach, great scenery down the Rhine Gorge
    15:23 Day 14 Tail wind to Bingen, Rudesheim, Eltville, Mainz, Oppenheim. Hotel confusion
    24:22 Day 15 Oppenheim to Worms
    26:29 Day 16, reached 1000 km, National Holiday, lots of parties en route, "retro" pension in Speyer!
    30:58 Day 17 Speyer, first puncture, field roads through agricultural sections, storks and campground success near Karlsruhe

    Great videos. Myself and 2 friends backpacked the same route in 1970 , as far as Koln. The people in the Netherlands and Belgium were very friendly and hospitable, but Germany was a challenge 😂

    Having another view of your trip, thanks for all the help and advice. Flying from Dublin to Zurich on the 13th of May, train to Basel and cycling north from there.
    Hope ye have more cycles to show us over the coming months

    I have watched many of your videos. They are beautifully filmed. Simply stunning scenery. Do you mind if I ask what camera you use?
    Thanks for sharing your wonderful tours with us. They're an inspiration to another retired guy!

      Thank you so much Daniel! Glad you found our videos. Most of this 2022 series was done with a GoPro Hero 10. It has a very good stabilisation feature that takes care of all of the shaking. A few stills and short video clips were done on our phones. Cheers to retirement 😀!

      @@daphnebehindbars Thanks so much, Daphne! I’ve got an old GoPro but want to upgrade and your videos are simply stunning as well as your editing. Your itineraries lend themselves to beautiful pictures/videos but few capture them as well as you. Truly inspiring. I just picked up cycling again after half a century on motorcycles and enjoy your videos so much. Thanks!

    About the holiday, I asked my brother (he lives in Germany). He told me the (christian) holiday is just a good excuse for a party/ festival. And thank you for sharing.

    Fabulous! Do you have a gps file of your route? Or on Strava I could get?

    • @daphnebehindbars
      @daphnebehindbars  Год назад +1

      Unfortunately, no we don't have a gps file of our route. We are fairly lo-tech when it comes to navigation. Frank does record our rides on Strava, but although I have a strava account, I don't use it at all. In the video description, I mention the maps and resources we use for route-finding.

    When you lock your bikes up and wander about did u leave your paniers on ur bikes with out a problem ?

    • @daphnebehindbars
      @daphnebehindbars  Год назад +2

      Yes, we did sometimes leave the bikes unattended with the panniers on, eg when grocery shopping, going to a restaurant or visiting a tourist site. Of course whenever possible we'd park the bikes where we could keep an eye on them from inside, but that wasn't always possible. Of course we'd take our valuables with us - Frank has all his in his backpack and mine are in a sack inside my handlebar bag, so I just grab the sack and take it with me. We never had any issues fortunately.
