North Sea to Adriatic Cycle Tour: Ep10 FINALE - Cyclovia Alpe Adria Radweg (CAAR) - Venzone to Grado
This episode begins in the Italian town of Venzone as we begin the final two days of the Cyclovia Alpe Adria Radweg (CAAR), which will complete our quest to ride from the North Sea to the Adriatic Sea.
We have left the mountains behind now and travel through agricultural lowlands and vineyards through a few very interesting and historical towns en route to the sea.
The ride culminates in the little fishing village of Grado where we celebrate quietly with a beer after 2900 km through six countries, with 46 days of riding spread over a total of 56 days.

    Thanks Daphne and Frank, I really enjoyed all ten episodes of this fantastic series, way to go! I was attracted to your videos because I have ridden a number of times in the Netherlands, and also along the Rhine from Mainz to Dusseldorf. My NL trips have mainly been relatively short day or so trips from Amsterdam. My German trip was along the path that hugs the Rhine over the course of five days, with short forays into some towns and cities along the way. I was thinking of maybe simply following the Rhine from its source in Switzerland to Rotterdam and the North Sea and touring Zealand and the coast, but will now think more about ranging farther afield now that I see how it can be done! Cheers, and safe travels!

    What do you do with your gear when doing activities off the bike?

    • @daphnebehindbars
      @daphnebehindbars Месяц назад

      We generally leave the panniers on the locked bikes when going grocery shopping or visiting a museum/chateau etc, just bringing our valuables with us. If we're spending a whole day exploring a town, we try to stay somewhere that the bikes can be stored somewhere more secure. For example when we visited Amboise and stayed 2 nights, we booked a lockable tented cabin in the campground where we were able to put our bikes inside. We do have little cable locks attaching our panniers to the bikes, so someone can't just lift the panniers off - a small deterrent.

    Nice route, I have noticed that Netherlands was more easy to ride than the Germany part, Correct?

    • @daphnebehindbars
      @daphnebehindbars 7 месяцев назад

      Hi Anjo, if you mean in terms of flat terrain, yes the Netherlands is easy riding. However, the rest of the Rhine route in Germany/Switzerland as far as Lake Constance is also pretty flat, since it's generally along or close to the river. It's more hilly between Lake Constance (Bodensee) and the Danube, but then quite flat along the Danube to Passau. We got into more hills in Austria. In terms of route-finding, the Netherlands section was straight-forward as other than Rotterdam, it doesn't go through any big cities. Some sections in Germany were more confusing through the bigger cities. Of course cyclists using gpx devices wouldn'y find that a problem. In terms of finding campgrounds, it was quite easy in the Netherlands, not so easy in the industrial part of the Rhine in Germany (Wesel to Cologne), easy in France and Austria, and they weren't as plentiful in Italy. Pathways and road surfaces were good throughout our route for the most part. That's a long answer to a short question! But I wasn't exactly sure what you meant

      Wow, what a wonderful compliment, thank you Alain! We're delighted that you enjoyed our journey. Of course for this trip, because we used parts of a few different routes, we had several different guidebooks and maps. If you wouldn't mind going back and looking at the description blurbs of Episodes 1, 5 and 10 you will find, under "resources", the names of the maps and guides we used for EV15, EV 6 and the Alpe Adria Radweg. Hope that helps 😊
