It's not that you won't encounter him, it's that it makes encountering him less likely, not to mention the fact that the chance to find him becomes 0% after you encounter him (then raises back up with each new curse)
descending down floors (not when leaving his room though) increases his spawn by 5% and each minor curse obtained gives another 5% of him spawning while majors give 10%. each blessing received drops it by 5%
Blessings decrease Sho'guul chance of appearing (major 10%, minor 5%, blessing -5%). also cursed fire/chest only give you major curses (from my playing)
man you know what would put a huge damper on DF's curse farms? a curse of "watered potions" "potions sometimes have a chance of not working/have halved effects"
Then he gets a purification potion and it only sets his health to 1 and his keys to 0 The bombs and curses are the same, then he gets a really hard floor...

How to find the purple guy with the curses, ctrl c from the wiki: Every run, the percentage chance to encounter Sho'guul is set to 5 % at the start of Goldmine 1. The chance you accumulate carries over floors in a single run. Obtaining curses grants 10 % per major curse, and 5 % per level of minor curse. Obtaining a blessing, whether through the use of Inverter, through Altars or picking them up from the ground, removes 5 %. Blessings granted by the Censer do not count towards this calculation. Removing curses, whether through Penance, the Purge or Purification potions, Talismans or otherwise, does not reduce the chance to encounter Sho'guul. Leaving Sho'guul's floor sets your chance to encounter Sho'guul again to 0 %. The check if he will appear on this floor is made when you enter the exit room, so you can pick every curse you can on the floor, go check the exit and only after that pick up the blessings, increasing your chances of finding him. (Sorry for my english)
DF The math to get legendary relic thing Obtaining curses grants 10 % per major curse, and 5 % per level of minor curse. Obtaining a blessing, whether through the use of Inverter, through Altars or picking them up from the ground, removes 5 %. Starting blessings don't count. Meeting him resets chance to 0%
Tbh, if you play this game like a bullet hell, then it's possible to beat it without getting any relics, blessings etc. whatsoever. All bosses have patterns that allow you to dodge their attacks, and there are very few rooms where you are forced to tank damage. Of course, it is not easy to do.
DF, if you break the rocks on the side in Ponzu's room, you can stay there and Ponzu won't be able to attack you. Combined with increased attack size, increased attack rate, and Grimhilde's Mirror, you can just stay there while you fight him and never take damage.
Your undermine videos made me buy the game on steam as my first PC game. How do you PC players do it? Even if i know my laptop keyboard isn't ideal for gaming its still tough to walk jump throw and swing all in quick succession. Wish me luck on my journey to becoming one of the PC MASTER RACE.
Sho’gul(or “Shobama” as I call him) has a 30%(something near that) chance to spawn with no blessings or curses. His chance will increase by 5% if you get a curse and increase by 10% for a major curse. The chance will decrease by 5% when getting a blessing. with inverter, every time you pray you don’t decrease or increase, but when you remove a curse, the chance will decrease by 5%. This is bad because shobama’s items are good and game changing. Inverter basically removes shobama from your run, unless you stack major curses
One thing that seems to be the case with the max-level Sylph: getting multiple blessings in the same action (like removing 5 curses or all curses while you have the Inverter) seems to end up so that only the *first* blessing you get is doubled, while the rest are just single levels - it's either that, or the first one is the only one that shows the text & plays the sound. Not to mention the trend of the 5-curse potion only removing 4 of DF's curses in videos as of late, which is really weird.
Another, somewhat unrelated tip: a few levels in Fortitude + the Gordon's Tunic relic makes stepping on fire that's on the ground basically a non-issue. Of course, the lava boots make you immune to floor fire (iirc), but.. you also burn the ground when you jump, so those are only truly useful when paired with Galoshes. (I personally think Galoshes + Lava shoes should merge into something with both effects plus something else, maybe a bit of a movement speed boost.) Also, Shadow's Fang is +50% critical chance, and every Savagery blessing is +5%, so at 10 Savagery with Shadow's Fang, you should technically have a 100% chance to critically strike. Fortitude is a 10% reduction in damage taken per stack, too, so with 10 of it, you're taking 100% less damage - not zero damage, though, it's actually about half to minimal damage. Spikes do like 6 damage per at around 6-8 Fortitude, iirc, so lots of stuff on the floors become laughable with enough Fortitude, Toughness, and Heartiness. The Undermine wiki has pages for all of the blessings detailing what they do, that's where I'm getting these numbers from. I've confirmed a few of them (like Wealth) through my own gameplay & checking the numbers, so you can count it as reliable.
All of his mining characters (all games) should be put into a cool poster but in an epic way. I'd hang that up on my wall for sure. Get some merch DF! Pls.
