Hello friends, Garygoyles and fellow poets welcome back to the channel! Recently Taylor Swift announced her new album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ at the Grammys, and it got me wondering, is Taylor Swift a tortured poet like the rest of us? Well, I don’t know about tortured, but turns out she is indeed a poet! Let’s talk about it.
Taylor is an incredibly accomplished songwriter and as I have already reviewed a collection of poetry from another songwriter previously (stay until the end to find out more about that) I am glad to say that I was excited to delve into Taylor’s poems.
It’s great that her album’s title mentions poets. Just exposure to the word and notion of poets goes a long way in bringing others to the craft, and for people to take the idea of writing poetry more seriously. Whether the album focuses on the idea of poetry, I very much doubt it but I am excited to know more. Also, Taylor is probably the most famous person in the world right now so having someone THIS popular mentioning poets is a big WIN for us.
First let’s take a look at a poem that according to the website, Taylor wrote when she was just 10 years old! It even won 1st place in a national poetry competition!
Next a poem Swift wrote to her 5th grade teacher who was pregnant. I am so impressed with Taylor’s grasp of metre and rhyme, even at such a young age. No wonder she has gone on the become the songwriter she has, with all the accolades she has collected over the years. How sweet to write your teacher such a poem. Clearly she had a lot of adoration for her.
Next, we have a poem that I assume was written much later, as Taylor Swift discusses some of her perceived flaws. This poem was written for Reputation magazine. Although she has clearly moved past the ‘every line must rhyme’ phase, she still very clearly has a firm grasp of poetry writing, and keeps things flowing and has some nice mid-sentence rhymes still. Her enjambments also keep the flow of the poem nice and tight. I like the topic and the inward reflection, and just really great flow in this one.
Moving on we have a poem called The Trick to Moving On which was written for British Vogue! It is about resilience and lessons learned. I am noticing she enjoys repetition. Another great tool in many art forms actually, not just poetry. Again, a master’s hold on rhyme schemes. I could definitely go from an occasional listener to a fan of Taylor Swift the poet. If she were ever to turn her attention to that of course. As someone who started writing poetry so young, I don’t think she would take advantage of the poetry boom but actually would take it very seriously.
Finally, we have a poem called Why She Disappeared. Where Swift talks about the downfall of her reputation. This one I feel is quite separate from all the others I read. This one takes some sitting with to understand fully! Which is what poetry is all about! Obviously, love is a big theme here, but there were some metaphors in here that I would like to take some time analysing. I feel like the flow of this is slightly broken, probably intentional. The poem is after all about her reputation breaking down and building yourself back up. Not so many rhymes in here either. A great poem that I will look over again this evening for sure.
Finally, Nicki did mention that there is a poetry film out there which she used to play on her tour, and Nicki very kindly tracked it down for me and I thought I would watch it for the first time here on the video with all of you.
And that is all for this video my friends! I hope you enjoyed it and I would encourage you to give Taylor’s poetry a read for yourselves. If you ever find yourself watching this video Taylor, I am demanding a poetry collection from you too! Thank for watching and catch you next time!

She has tons of poems that she's written recently. Maybe I'm too philosophical but songs are poetry. Read her song lyrics. that becomes a poem. There are different types of artwork like realism, impressionism, etc etc. songs are poems when spoken with no melody.

You should react to her folklore/evermore albums! Mainly, Ivy from evermore, happiness from evermore, the lakes from folklore, hoax from folklore, and any other songs from those albums! In my opinion very poetic songs!
