Hello friends, Garygoyles, and fellow poets welcome back to the channel! I was recently taking a stroll through the woods as a poet does and thought I would give Miley Cyrus’ album a listen. The first song that came on the shuffle was a song called Handstand, and it open with a spoken word piece, naturally I wanted to dig further and so in this video we’re going to talk about Miley Cyrus’ poetry. Let’s go.
I briefly met Miley once at the Hannah Montanna movie premiere in London. Her dad followed closely behind and maybe I imagined it but his eyes pierced my soul in the way a father does when a young man may host feelings for his daughter.
During my research for this video I stumbled across this poem by James Reidel and just felt really uncomfortable. I won’t be the person saying what a poet should and shouldn’t write about or express, but I was disappointed that the Poetry Foundation not only published this poem on their website, but printed it in their magazine too. It feels really misogynistic. So before we discuss Miley’s poetry, let’s quickly shift the mood to something more lighthearted. I found a SNL clip on youtube called Poetry Class with Miley, and though it would be fun to react to before actually diving into her words, so lets do that now.
So, I found a facebook post by Miley going back to 2015.
If you wanna find beauty in
    Such a saddening thing,
    Imagine yourself as a flower
    The seed being your brain
We all are just petals, beautiful
    For time…
Then we return to the dirt
Where we began in our minds.
It’s not the most mind-blowing of poems, and we’re not sure in what context this was written or posted. It might have just been between takes, or whilst hanging around writing an album rather than a serious ‘I’m going to write and share an epic poem” but it has a couple of nice rhymes in there and a bit of flow sprinkled in too.
Okay, so on to the main event. The intro to Handstand. Now the song is attributed to Miley, Harmony Korine and Maxx Morando.
We met each other on the neon dinghy
Past the manta rays and palm trees
Glowing creatures beamed down from great heights
    Electric eels and red venom
In the sky, we could see the riders on the horseback
On comets, coming toward us, kicking up with laughter
My friend Big Twitchy rode the boat into the light
    Surfed to the north break
We danced until there was nothing left
    Just me and Twitchy
    'Cause that's all we knew
So I found out in my research that Big Twitchy relates to a Harmony Korrine project where he would create ‘creatures’ by drawing them in neon. I also know that Harmony Korrine is the filmmaker behind Spring Breakers as mentioned and that he is famous for that style of work. So I think her friend ‘Big Twitchy’ could well be Harmony Korrine when you look at the first line: We met on the neon dinghy.
Maybe this is about a fun substance-enthused night with Korinne. Perhaps something more when you start analysing the song lyrics… but I doubt it because her boyfriend produced the song and that would be pretty dysfunctional. But the imagery of “neons” and “glowing creatures in the sky”… “dancing until there’s nothing left”… “cause that’s all we knew”. I think it’s a piece on two individuals leaning on each other for a good time… It’s a free-verse piece with great use of imagery and metaphors. I think we all have a story of just escaping under the stars with someone to forget the world around us and that’s the image I have on this. The mention of palm trees and manta rays makes me think it was on a beach somewhere, which is kind of fun… or that it took place in Florida. I think they have manta rays there, right?
Until next time folks, my name is Adam Gary and my shoe size is 11 but I prefer to squeeze into a 10.5. Don’t forget to like and subscribe and if you want to know what I think about Taylor Swift’s poetry, click right here. See you again soon.

Hello everyone! I originally had a segment where I reacted to a skit with Miley but alas, it was denied for copyright. I have disputed it but there wouldn’t have been a video this week if I didn’t trim it out and upload this version for now. If the version with the skit gets passed then perhaps I’ll leave it up as a member’s exclusive? I hope you enjoy the video in its shorter form, regardless! 🙏🖤

I wonder if there are more to come. I have a feeling there will be. Her intro spoken word piece in Handstand reminded me of the Lana Del Rey Album, actually.

I agree the Poetry Foundation should do better, they certainly aren’t short on poems to publish. Poets are always going to write cringe work but they don’t need to be given a platform.

Very true! It’s a shame. I’m not sure if they’ll ever see this, but if they do hopefully it’ll make them reconsider.

Ha! Hmm 🤔 I have a fun story about bumping into Michael Gambon once. Maybe that will have to feature in a video at some point!

Seems more of a thoughtful poem than frivolous....at least to me.
