  • In today's video, I will be doing a walkaround and introduction to the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 36 pellet smoker. Camp Chef claims that this pellet smoker will give you more REAL smoke flavor utilizing the smoke box with wood chunks, chips, pellets, or charcoal, and today I will be putting that to the test on a rack of ribs! My opinion on the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 36 is that it is wonderful looking pellet smoker, and performed flawlessly...BUT did it add more smoke flavor that we are all looking for in a pellet grill? You'll have to watch to find out!

    I have the same smoker with the side kick. I made a pork shoulder. Last Sunday for my very first ever attempt at smoking. It was great. Took it to work and let the guys have some who actually smoke regularly, and they said this is really good! You’ve never smoked before! Needless to say I’m very happy with it. I added the blocks to the smoker regularly through the duration up to 167. Once wrapped I did not see the need to add anymore blocks. I would definitely recommend this.

    I have one. 6 months. It definitely is an upgrade from the normal pellets, but if you don't like the fact that pellet grills lack smoke flavor, this to me maybe brings it up a couple of points tops. This will not be like using a stick burner nor even close. With that said, I like it.

    Kind of interested in this pellet cooker. I'm happy with my Smokefire but I changed my mind from possibly upgrading to the LSG pellet to this unit and getting a LSG stick burner instead. This is for the future but for now, I'm really like the innovation of this Camp Chef Pro with the smoke box. Will be watching for future cooks on this. Thanks!

      Well….the LSG pellet may be making an appearance on the channel soon 👀

      @@AshKickinBBQ Oh heck, will be looking forward to those videos as well. My thinking is I want to get a stick burner next so the money I was saving for the pellet grill will go to that and if I want an upgrade on a pellet, was looking for maybe this Camp Chef. I know you weren't a fan of the Weber but I do like it, just might want to upgrade for next year for something with more smoke flavor.

    Pretty sure that was a twist off cap on that Busch. I would have used the opener too though. Gotta test it.

    Nice informative video as always, Darrin!! If I don't decide to break the bank on an LSG, I've been considering this as my next cooker after my very problematic Pitboss 1600. I wish it would open to sear for that char, but I guess the sidekick could pick that part up. Also, I wondering if that Woodwind controller has additional smoke settings, and if so, what setting did you run your test ribs on? Thank you!

    How does this compare to some of the other $1500 pellet smokers you have reviewed? Better then the Weber or Treager?

    • @AshKickinBBQ
      @AshKickinBBQ  10 месяцев назад

      I’d say it’s comparable, I like the wood option. It’s a solid unit. About the same as Traeger, better than Weber.

    If Pit Boss added the extra smoker box , it would be tops, their variable smoke setting tries to mimic the extra smoke , I am on my second PB and just can't get the smoke I am looking for, I usually have to add a smoke tube.

  • @Appytail

    One BIG flaw this smoker has is when it rains all water accumulated on the lid will fall on your food when you open that lid. Also, my lid is NOT smoke tight at all. Something like 3/8 off. So those gasket all around are next to useless unless I put a 20 lbs weight on the handle. Also, the temperature varies above 75 degrees inside the smoker. I think a 24 inches instead of the 36 inches would have been better. My previous "standard" no-pro 24 inches CampChef cooks actually better.

    • @Appytail
      @Appytail 2 месяца назад

      Maybe it's time for an update after a year. I learned heat management and literally transform this 36 into a 24 inches. I install pans filled up with wood chunks to reduce the cooking area. On both shelfs. With the actual benefit that those wood chunks are pre-smoked-bone-dried when I need them. All of my gasket are dead and would normally need replacement. Temp sensors melted a loooooooooog time ago. Replaced them with full stainless steels one. (600 F safe) from Fireboard. I had to buy jack adapters cause Fireboard's jacks are smaller than Camp Chef. Still love that smoker. I cook everything on it. Pizza, Chicken pie, any piece of meat you can imagine, et.c.

    • @artchristophersen5702
      @artchristophersen5702 Год назад

      You'd think with the word "pro" they would just add to the woodwind 36 with the firebox, but no they didn't add the direct sear slide with the pro, but you can get a sear box option for it.

      Sadly all industries clamp down on reviewers who are too raw about negative comments. That’s why you never hear about a ‘tough’ YT critic that is provided alpha models or finished products to reveiw early in the product life cycle.
      Have to play along to get along.
      On the upside good reviewers will leave enough truth to make a good decision if you’re able to read between the lines.
