this was a great interview. you seem unafraid to share your personal insights and experiences but did so deftly without drawing the focus to yourself. class act.
I connected with Tim & Eric because I love how their stuff provokes you to ask yourself what you think is funny about it. Or if you do. This interview (and Heidecker's closely observed reactionary stand-up character and the Office Hours Bill Maher bit with Fred Armisen) puts the meta right out in the open. Comedy needs conventions and norms to push against. (What's George Carlin's most famous routine? Seven Words You Can't Say On Television. That was from 1972, decades before anyone came up with "political correctness" or "wokeism" or "cancel culture." Boundaries are the norm, not something new, and a performer who can't figure out how to adapt to changing audiences is going to get left behind. That's always been true.) If something makes you laugh and you have an appreciation of comedy, you might want to ask yourself what you think is funny about it. Any clown can slip on a banana peel and maybe you laugh or maybe you don't, but context and execution are everything. What's funny about it? A lot of stand-up is just a communal ritual, where the comedian's intonations and rhythms tell the audience when they're expected to laugh on cue and they respond like Pavlov's dogs. (They laugh or they clap when the little bell rings -- and maybe they even salivate.) Hacky comedy is not edgy. Chappelle's trans obsession mystifies me for the reasons Heidecker outlines here: What's it to you if people wanting to express who they feel they are? What's going to happen in those "all gender bathrooms" that couldn't happen anywhere else? It's not just pointlessly cruel, it's willfully stupid.
Tim’s observation of the rise of “literalism” rings so true! I’ve known people who get worked up with anger at public art (especially poetry) because they don’t immediately understand it. But at the same time there’s a weird reversal of that among mean-spirited people - like when trump says ill-informed, cruel things and his supporters spin it as a deeply artistic allegory. Maybe these are all symptoms of rising tensions - especially among a certain kind of person who’s too online, in a bubble, and otherwise fixated on petty infringements of their selfish preferences?

I've been a huge fan of Tim & Eric and Tim, himself, since they started with "Tom Goes to the Mayor" in 2004 - and Heidecker was in an incredibly open and articulate mood, here. Probably the best interview with him that I've seen. To me, he's just the greatest comic voice of the 21st century. I just think the culture is way too noisy and impervious to irony and satire right now (his point about the difference between "ranting" about certain things in the interview - and the *satirizing* in his work of those things - is the clearest delineation between what he does and what most comics do these days) to appreciate what he's doing to the degree that he should be appreciated. It was great to see him say things here that needed to be said about a lot of issues raised. Thanks for giving him the space to say them.
Interesting to hear him articulate his views. I discovered Tim & Eric through Dr Brule. I love his work, (especially 'On Film') but to say I disagree with him politically is an understatement. Mischaracterising cancel culture as "empathy" is completely disingenuous. I truly don't understand how he can't see the damage that an activist lead culture is doing, but I know these endless arguments are utterly pointless. He's a nice guy and very talented. Gosh, this is so refreshing. Somehow today, I've been seeing a lot of clips of white male comics just giving the most basic takes on trans people, and for Tim to be so nonchalantly open and understanding almost surprised me. ps. Speaking of Ricky Gervais, one of the clips I mentioned was Norm and Stephen Merchant really fumbling their way through a conversation about Caitlyn Jenner.
The "white male" is entirely unnecessary here and honestly really cringe. This is a huge thing across all comics on RUclips. Hate to break it to you but transphobia is prevalent across all races, ethnicities and genders. It's the hot topic and many people have only now had to confront what it means and as such do not understand it. When people don't understand things it's very much a flight or fight response. Mainstream conversation is just now confronting concepts and discussions that have been present in LGBT spaces for decades. It's a social growing pain. I'm not excusing people being shitty to trans people I'm just trying to clear the air and confront a pigeonholed argument
The fact that he intiontally misprounounced "analogous" makes this a bit. And we dig one step deeper to a man who, in this clip, hails Andy as a bit of a hero.

Tim is right, trans minorities are being targeted by politicians, and anti-trans propaganda is actually financially backed by Christian conservative think tanks, and the Kreml, to name a few of the main sources of financing. In the US, if a trans woman goes to the women's restroom, she could face up to 1 year in prison. This is happening right now. Over 100,000 trans people have had to move from their home state in the US, just because of the relentless persecution of trans people. also, some of my all time favorite comedians are George Carlin and Steven Wright!!! btw, Gervais blocked me on twitter for just saying "gervais might be offended by trans people, but that doesn't make him right". absolute snowflake. oh, and please don't call it "transgenderism" 😕
Im really not trying to be a troll, but as a college student doing legit research with my professor and our cohort, can you help provide what you define as persecution and what examples you have where it's happened in the past 5 years? 😢 We're all struggling to find evidence.
I think Chris Rock was demonstrating how words do lead to you getting hurt. He used words, which directly resulted in him getting punched in the face. He's saying words can hurt.
"Why do you care" is always the most important question with regards to the trans issue. I always wonder why the left doesn't just start with that question. If you can't answer it in any meaningful way, you're unable to really talk about it. Why would your opinion have any weight if you can't provide a valuable reason to care?
"There is an understandable window of confusion..." Understandable? Not to me. What is the metaphor? Is the window open or closed? Is it in a WALL of confusion? A HOUSE of confusion?
Regarding Rogan’s podcast.. I could care less that it’s Rogan but the fact is that he occasionally gets interesting people(being such a massive platform)on who are fun to listen to irregardless of which podcast I’m listening to them on.. I always just seek out individuals I’d like to hear speak and listen to them on whatever show they’re on. Rogan is just one in a sea of many. Granted, we know going in he will steer the convo towards dmt or ufc at some point but I normally turn it off at that point 🤷♂️
I love Tim so much, and that specifically requires his worst characters. I’m glad he can be sincere now, in a way, although I admit I miss the dedicated interview fuckery. That being said, I always sensed some kind of 2007 anger-empathy was at the heart of all of the extremist absurdity. And I was right. I must say - you had to be there, and I wouldn’t change it for anything - but I am so grateful I got to be there for that adult swim college time. T&E was the stuff of bedtime and sillies. Thanks boys.
Fun interview, minus the serious stuff which I don't fully agree about. But basically what I most love about Tim as a comedian is that watching his crap for basically any length of time is what it would be like to live with baby brothers who never really grow up, in fact badly regress.
I think you can make trans jokes but they should be smart especially if you’re considered the best comedian. Dave Chapelle made a joke that I distinctly remember making in 2005 when I was 15 years old. If you’re considered the goat I don’t know if your specials should have high school jokes from 2005. I like his show, I think killing them softly is one of the best specials ever. But all his new specials are so boring.

Well said
Im really not trying to be a troll, but as a college student doing legit research with my professor and our cohort, can you help provide what you define as persecution and what examples you have where it's happened in the past 5 years? 😢 We're all struggling to find evidence.
@@nolancho there's plenty of evidence if you have access to a google search engine!
you should be mocked

I think Chris Rock was demonstrating how words do lead to you getting hurt. He used words, which directly resulted in him getting punched in the face. He's saying words can hurt.
beyerdynamic 770s, good choice
"Why do you care" is always the most important question with regards to the trans issue. I always wonder why the left doesn't just start with that question. If you can't answer it in any meaningful way, you're unable to really talk about it. Why would your opinion have any weight if you can't provide a valuable reason to care?
This is not a softball interview. No one-upmanship from another comedian either.
"There is an understandable window of confusion..."
Understandable? Not to me. What is the metaphor? Is the window open or closed? Is it in a WALL of confusion? A HOUSE of confusion?
fix your levels bro 😎
no hate to the interviewer tho, nice guy
Late to the party here, but great interview! Instant subscribe
Fantastic interview, Tim is great, wow
Great interview, I've got such a soft spot for Tim
Never thought I would forgive this man for bringing live action to cartoon network but tgats really more the fault of 911 hysteria and not Tom
Why his headphones teleporting on and off his head all the time? It's weird...
Granted, we know going in he will steer the convo towards dmt or ufc at some point but I normally turn it off at that point 🤷♂️
regardless*

I love Tim so much, and that specifically requires his worst characters. I’m glad he can be sincere now, in a way, although I admit I miss the dedicated interview fuckery. That being said, I always sensed some kind of 2007 anger-empathy was at the heart of all of the extremist absurdity. And I was right. I must say - you had to be there, and I wouldn’t change it for anything - but I am so grateful I got to be there for that adult swim college time. T&E was the stuff of bedtime and sillies. Thanks boys.
Tim should know about cancel culture, he was an early adopter.
I like Tim even if I’m more of a capitalist. Didn’t know what to make of all the satire and parodies at first. Great stuff.
Fun interview, minus the serious stuff which I don't fully agree about. But basically what I most love about Tim as a comedian is that watching his crap for basically any length of time is what it would be like to live with baby brothers who never really grow up, in fact badly regress.
"I don't like something or understand the comedy in it that everyone else does so he must be immature and idiotic." Sure, Cheryl.
@@hollydaugherty2620 Huh? I've been a Tim fan for a very long time. Would you like to hand me my head back now, Madam?
@@hollydaugherty2620Be nice to Cheryl, Holly
this guy is obviously not a gregg head. 5 bags of popcorn and 2 bags of soda.
The guy who got Sam Hyde's show taken off Adult Swim makes comments on "cancel culture", that's funny
You had great questions! Awesome
What’s with the young filter on Tim hd?
His piss drinking addiction is wreaking havoc on his skin and he’s self conscious about it.
Why do you keep saying "transgenderism"? "Ism" implies an ideology, and trans is an adjective, not an ideology.
hey! several other people corrected me on this shortly after i posted. my error. lesson learned and have changed language since. thanks for calling me out though. genuinely appreciate it.
@ryanwantstoknow we're all doing the best we can!
