German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is visiting China. He was in Beijing today, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping. Scholz said there were multiple reasons for his visit, including addressing all the wars taking place. Both Scholz and Xi say they discussed the war in Ukraine and Israel's war on Hamas. But was this the primary reason behind Scholz's visit? If you look at his entourage, which consisted of German business leaders, the bigger picture emerges. This visit was for business. Scholz was in China to find a way to boost trade as his country's economic growth is slowing down. What happened to the West's plans of "de-risking" from China?

They made scholz go China to show him their german plants need to be in China not just for manufacturing but also R n D. You see the german plants have benefitted from the young brilliant chinese talents working in their R n D as well as from cooperation of chinese sci tech universities in sharing the universities research findings with them.
Germans hope to regain their sovereignty when the empire of lies collapsed.

@@nanyanguo1University research collaboration may be good between the two countries - but Chinese companies (with suspected backing from elements in the military) engage in IP theft and industrial espionage on a large scale. Maybe most is directed at the US but small to medium sized German companies fall prey to these activities, too. 20% of all patents issued per year still come from Germany, so this is a big problem and the Chinese government refuses to do anything about it. That's a problem that has to be solved so the economic relationship profits both Chinese and Germans. China is already selling I think 20% more to Germany than Germany sells to China.
On the other hand China is farther advanced in AI research. I have an interest in the subject and it seems to me Germany is quite a bit behind when it comes to fundamental research in Artificial Intelligence, for now it seems we only use the algorithms developed by American tech giants (or indeed Chinese researchers) and maybe find interesting applications for them for particular use cases - but we don't we don't seem to be making fundamental contributions ourselves for now. (France at least presented a little sensation with Mistral - a model that requires only a tiny fraction of the computational ressources but comes surprisingly close to the best American models.)
I'm sure Germany will only profit from collaboration with Chinese universities - especially because the important research in China, like in Germany, still happens at the universities, not within private corporations like in America where everything is for sale. I'm sure German universities will be glad to have established ties for collaboration and exchange with Chinese research universities in previous decades.

As one guy I've argued with, the G7 leaders go to China so China can beg them, lol.
German was one of earliest nations that exited China back in 2010s to shift their investment to India. After a decade, the businesses suffered massive lost due to lack of infrastructure that drive production costy and very slow pace, not to mention corruption in Indian bureau and extortions from local government. German corporations begged for China help and China willing to reduce massive cost for German companies to return back to China. That's why Scholz visited China to express Germany's gratitude for saving their economy.
India was lucky back in 2010s as it was proposed as "the next superpower" from US propaganda in order to draw investors out from China. But unfortunately, it is what it is. India is cheap to enter, slow and costy to run and almost impossible to go out without losing even more.
Do you have any articles to back up that narrative? I'm German and I don't remember any mention of a German shift to India. What's more in 2010 China had a rather positive image in Germany. China was seen to have dragged the world economy out of recession and under Hu Jintao the country seemed to be on a path towards rule-of-law, improved human rights and more goodwill towards Westerners.
