Thanks for making a serious video on this topic, I posted a comment on Rene's "explainer" video yesterday about this. Apple needs to better organize and upgrade their SKUs and options offered on these new Apple Silicon machines. These new chips are setup and configured differently and they need the appropriate amount of RAM and Storage without costing the customer hundreds if not over a thousand dollars extra!
I am really impressed by the work you guys put in while exposing Apple's cheap out plan.. Amazing As a potential customer, I really appreciate your time and effort in bringing out the true picture of Baseline M2
There’s no other channel I trust more for in depth and unbiased Mac reviews and I own loads of Mac gear. Please Keep doing exactly what you have been doing.
Awesome video like always! The reason everyone else won't cover the SSD like this is because if Rene Richie or iJustine said what you said about Apple's products they wouldn't get invited to Apple events anymore. They play the Apple politics card every time vs being real about their thoughts and opinions.
Fuck it , I’m done with Apple , selling all my apple products and move to a company that actually gives their customers real value for their money , selling 200$ SSD that only cost 2$ ? Biggest scam in history
I bought the 2020 13” M1 MBP in January 2021. I got it with 16gb and 1tb. I don’t have any reason to upgrade. Can’t afford the 16” and don’t see getting the 14” so I’m staying.
I was really surprised when you showed the other reviewers comments… really disappointed that they defend Apple in that way, thank you to open the eye to all of us
So let's theorise for a second: Let's say the M2 Air comes with 1 x 256gb chip and you can only upgrade one - would a 16gb RAM upgrade alone make enough difference? or should the SSD be prioritised over more RAM?
For me I bought ram16 ssd256 because of how I’m using I try 8/512 and 16/256 on my job or what I’m doing 16/256 faster then 8/512 I work in online don’t use much transfer import export fire , yeah some LR + PS is still faster then 8/512 I think because of swapping ssd ram8 is not enough, but if I have to upgrade 16/512 I’ll choose pro14” better
To this point I think, M1 macbook pro with 16gb and 256gb storage is far better and faster than any m2 macbook pro with 8/256, 16/256, 8/512. Only 16/512 model will be slightly better than m1. This is just shocking lol.
Ngl I felt the same when he said he got sick of making vids of that MacBook after testing it and getting issues by the SSD. This is the last one to decide if the SSD upgrade helps
The base model MacBook Air M2 is made for people who are not using the MacBook for hardcore photo and video editing. It works just fine for web browsing, non cpu and gpu intensive coding, and using Microsoft applications for business. This makes up the majority of people who buy Macs and the reason why the base model sells so well. The people who need a Mac for photo and video editing should just get the MacBook Pro 14 in because it is at a near identical price point (when its on sale) to the MacBook Air 512 gb SSD and 16 gb RAM.
I think apple does all this just to give YT more content, I disagree regarding the base model. These geeked out spec times and comparisons are for "creative pros", if that's the case just get a loaded Pro model because if you're a pro you in the business of making money doing professional content. The base model is fine if you're doing anything, even these labor intensive programs and more, because at the end of the day anyone looking for the basic Macbook is NOT going to be using this computer like your tests, greatly appreciate the info and effort you put into this, but it's just all relative to individual use.
I love how you dont argue with the masses that bash you or say you are wrong in your tests, but rather you let the proof in the pudding argue for you! Its almost impossible if not impossible to argue with the results! Keep grinding my brothers, you are helping us and through your hard work, i will be getting my first ever apple product! I love you guys and the work you do!
Some people are not too bright, I made a comment on one of Max Tech’s other videos and someone argued against it even though the evidence was in the video, clearly I thought they missed the result so pointed them to the time stamp, nope they had seen it but believed the issue would be fixed with an update. :/ Max Tech are apple fans too, but the difference between them and a fanboy is they expect and hold Apple to a higher standard AND show evidence of their findings regardless, while fanboys think Apple can do no wrong.
M2 definitely, especially because it insinuates that it should be better than the M1 in every category, where as here in real world testing Max Tech does an excellent job breaking it down. My base model MBA M1 SSD is running 2708 write and 2879 read at 1GB stress. I bought this thing for 524 bucks
What about the “new” old base M1 MBA? Does that still have two 128GB SSD modules? It would be interesting to know if Apple is no longer using any 128GB SSD modules on any current MacBook
Apple fanboys going all hard to defend Apple against MAXTECH with this disaster of a base model M2 MB pro calling it “you won’t see much of a difference in real life use” are being cults/sheeps. Max as an Apple fan did a great job exposing Apple dirty business tactics through real life test stats, this is what I call a genuine reviewer, no bias

Yeah, the titles are clickbaity and it irks me sometimes, but the content does deliver. I’m not sure there’s others here on RUclips that do comparisons as well as you. Keep up the good work.
I am forced to switch from Windows to MacOS and decided to wait for the M2 MacBook AIr. Is it likely that it will have a slow SSD on the 256GB model too and only the 512GB model will have the fast speeds? Because if that should be the case I would be forced to spend another 200$ for the storage upgrade, and since I already upgraded from 8 to 16gb of RAM this would get it to $1,7k, making the 14" 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro a much better choice. In that case only the M2 MacBook Air base model would make sense in terms of price to performance ratio. Waiting for the M2 Pro MacBook Pro is not an option for me.
Well switching back to windows is a far better choice and cost effective better windows laptop are available for cheaper or atleast just as much. Have a good day.
*how does the 512GB 8GB ram 13" M2 results, compare with the 512GB 16GB ram version you tested last time?* *also I want to see 512GB/8GB Vs 256GB/16GB.*
Thank you very much for the video. Wow that is crazy how much better the 512gig is doing over the 256gig. Ridiculous how Apple took a short cut on their ram to swap to single density. That just seems so wrong that Apple would do their customers even like me like that.
The m2 air technically should be the same thing. It doesn't have a fan to cool it because it is all passive cooling. I went from black m2 air hype to ouf. They cucked it so much might as well just buy a m1 pro 14' and get the miniLED display lol.
Excellent coverage as always, thank you for your honesty in bringing this to light. Would you still recommend the base MacBook Air M1 8gb 256 for those of us getting into the Mac ecosystem now or waiting for the M2 air that may exhibit the same issue?
If you can afford the 16Gb buy it. Extra memory doesn't use much power and eliminates swap caching that slows the machine. For video viewing and common office tasks, 8GB is more than adequate. When watching gaming specifications, I notice that games don't use CPU memory, they rely on GPU memory and CPU performance.
You always go above and beyond with your reviews! I am still surprised Apple even offered this, it’s an odd fit in the lineup… I hope the rest of the updated Macs carry the great momentum started with the M1!
Great job! Max Tech is the first Apple RUclips channel I have subscribed, watching all your videos helps me pick the right choice, though you guys can't get Apple products as fast as other RUclipsr that just makes simple unboxing video, I think Apple should definitely send you guys new products for thorough testing instead of giving them out to those unboxer.
Thank you guys for being honest and doing these tests. I hope this eats into the sales of this product - Apple needs to know that they will be called out on their BS. Super curious to see if this will be the case for the m2 Air as well.
Did not really like the comment from Gary - The Everyday Dad while his own content is extremely repetitive, incl ordering a bunch of crap accessories, ecosystem videos, apple refurb, and thats about sums it up! These synthetic benchmarks do provide some insight into a product and when corroborated by a bunch of them as well as real life testing as set up by Max Tech, do help put into context the performance of a device (ofc not for each use case). Max Tech was the first to take apart the STUDIO!
Great vid. Let’s hope they don’t destroy the M2MBA this way cause this is crazy. True that Apple’s been scamming customers for years with the apple tax and hardware overpricing but it seems to have gotten way out of control this year. Gonna keep my M1MBA forever lol
There is no way a lesser model will get better components than a "pro" model. Well, regardless whether this SSDgate issue exists or not, you should not be upgrading your M1 this year anyway, unless you want to prove that you are a spoiled first world rich person.
@@gigihanmandarin its not an “lesser” model… the air is actually dimensions better and apple knows it, I thing this “pro” laptop is just a placeholder for an upgraded version, so I think apple has saved up some good ssd’s for the air
Your intimate knowledge on Apple machines; your objective and thorough tests; your ease of explanation make your channel special. Your knowledge of Android is not as helpful so comparisons are not always as exact; however, comparing Apple to Apple there is no one better. I have made Apple purchases based on your videos and been very happy every time. 😊
great video. thanks for the in-depth comparison. I subscribed to this channel since the M1 released because you guys give the best in-depth review on RUclips. yes, sometimes the thumbnails might be click-baity but that's definitely the norm now on RUclips. I have no issues with that as long as the quality of content is top notch. Looking forward to the reviews when the M2 Air releases later this month.
I own a 27" 5k iMac from 2017 - It has this Fusion Drive of 1 Terrabyte with only 32 gigs of SSD. It is painfully slow for photo editing, I think even the base model of the M2 would be a huge jump up. I do not want to spend too much money. But I am curios if 8 Gigs of Ram are enough, when you use Lightroom and Photoshop simultanliously, without having no other apps open. What is crazy, is that even the 512gb model of the m2 is much slower using swap than the m1 using swap, that is even worse than only having slower ssd for file transfer and export, because it makes a real world difference. A very good video and thanks for covering that issue with the slow ssds.
The question is, does this problem scale up for larger SSD? Meaning, is the 1T SSD a double 512 or a single slot, duplicating the problems of the 256 and thus requiring a 2T?!
The 1TB SSD should have a larger cache but same read/write speeds as the 512 SSD. So file transfers should be better which it already is on the 512 model, rest should be pretty much same.
Wow, my previous comment even was shown in your video. Good job on this one and thanks for addressing this topic. Up to the more interesting stuff in the future.
I love your content. I am sorry that some people get upset that you reveal these potential issues. I love how deep you dive into these machines. I will always watch your videos before I buy an Apple device. Please keep the content coming, weather it is about this, or some other topic.
From this video I can work out that the M2 MacBook Air is going to be a massive disappointment as it will likely have the same SSD issue and won’t have active cooling so will be throttled and the M1 will perform better over more tests
Thank you very much for revealing the dark side of apples strategy. I really appreciate you guys taking so much time testing and reviewing between different specs. I can’t wait till you guys pick up the Mac airs. I’m still contemplating if I should get the 16gb 256 or 512.
@@adamchan968 I am still wondering if air m2 would work for me. However when I start adding more RAM and SSD the price runs so high that you can get decent gaming laptop (i know, hard to travel with) that will run everything you can think of (except Apple software ;) )

@@blinblinthing I think AMD is the well rounded one. Their performance is higher than an Apple, has good battery, and can also game. Apple is only good if you need all the battery in the world/ more than 10hrs

Hi Max, I really like your extensive comparison videos! Please keep doing them! ❤
I am really impressed by the work you guys put in while exposing Apple's cheap out plan.. Amazing
As a potential customer, I really appreciate your time and effort in bringing out the true picture of Baseline M2
I would like to see a comparison between 8 and 16 GB models where they both have an equal amount of SSD’s i.e both are 512 GB versions.
There’s no other channel I trust more for in depth and unbiased Mac reviews and I own loads of Mac gear. Please Keep doing exactly what you have been doing.
true!
Awesome video like always! The reason everyone else won't cover the SSD like this is because if Rene Richie or iJustine said what you said about Apple's products they wouldn't get invited to Apple events anymore. They play the Apple politics card every time vs being real about their thoughts and opinions.
Agreed!
Agreed. Rene Richie would sell his own mum for Apple's goodwill.
you're still not addressing the biggest question - how does the base model perform? forget about exportation times
I was really surprised when you showed the other reviewers comments… really disappointed that they defend Apple in that way, thank you to open the eye to all of us
So let's theorise for a second:
Let's say the M2 Air comes with 1 x 256gb chip and you can only upgrade one - would a 16gb RAM upgrade alone make enough difference? or should the SSD be prioritised over more RAM?
Interested in an answer as well :)
M1 with 16gb ram is the answer
This is just shocking lol.
and much cheaper
But are you considering the GPU? and 7 core vs 8 core wouldn't that make the 16/256 M2 8 core faster?
So weird how the M1 machines destroyed expectations and the first M2 severely falls short of expectations. Did they change product manager?
More like accountants got back in charge and Apple fired all good bullets first time around.
This review was really helpful to decide which to buy if trying to consider the 8gb RAM
Max Tech are apple fans too, but the difference between them and a fanboy is they expect and hold Apple to a higher standard AND show evidence of their findings regardless, while fanboys think Apple can do no wrong.
Yes they are apple fans and they will point out if apple dropped the ball and you will genuinely see their disappointment. I just love their honesty

Always doubt good tests sir. Keep em up.
No way around it, Apple should be ashamed for trying to pass this off on the public. Thank you Max Tech for a thorough and honest assessment.

You do a good, honest job. No reason for you to change your methods.
I spent 50 years developing and testing advanced equipment, especially lab gear.
What about the “new” old base M1 MBA? Does that still have two 128GB SSD modules? It would be interesting to know if Apple is no longer using any 128GB SSD modules on any current MacBook
Thanks for this test! I was about to buy the base M2, would you recommend the base m1 instead? Since it has a faster ssd?
Apple fanboys going all hard to defend Apple against MAXTECH with this disaster of a base model M2 MB pro calling it “you won’t see much of a difference in real life use” are being cults/sheeps. Max as an Apple fan did a great job exposing Apple dirty business tactics through real life test stats, this is what I call a genuine reviewer, no bias

I’ve been subbed for like a year , and steadily has become one of my favorite channels above other tech/apple channels. It’s to the point , good observations , and tell you the smart option and the best option depending on what you need . Keep doing you . I wonder what your comparisons will be with the m2 air vs this m2 and maybe even vs the base m1 air .
What I love about your videos is how quickly, yet thoroughly topics are explained. It makes it much easier to comprehend all the information. I'm a university student from Europe and could definitely use a new laptop for my studies. The weight and slim design of this laptop is perfect for a student like me.
In southeast asian countries, 16GBs models are so hard to find btw. Literally everyone uses the 8GB models.

This is one of the best videos you've produced...yet! Max is the best; should be on camera more often vs others.
Have a good day.
just buy m1 with 16gb ram to same price

Thank you very much for the video. Wow that is crazy how much better the 512gig is doing over the 256gig. Ridiculous how Apple took a short cut on their ram to swap to single density. That just seems so wrong that Apple would do their customers even like me like that.
Thanks for the video
Great video, thanks! Have you considered unplugging the fan of the M2 MBP to test how the air will perform?

Would it be safe to assume that the 16GB/256 and 16GB/512 would have the exact same results? Really worried about getting the 16/256 M2 Air now.
The m2 air technically should be the same thing. It doesn't have a fan to cool it because it is all passive cooling. I went from black m2 air hype to ouf. They cucked it so much might as well just buy a m1 pro 14' and get the miniLED display lol.
Hello, are you happy using Mac air m2? Is the amount of ram and ssd enough? I will use it for software
Great work guyz, the information is so helpful.
Thanks.
Excellent coverage as always, thank you for your honesty in bringing this to light. Would you still recommend the base MacBook Air M1 8gb 256 for those of us getting into the Mac ecosystem now or waiting for the M2 air that may exhibit the same issue?
The real question is whether newly manufactured 2020 mba m1 also has one 256 nand.
@@mk1111 maybe buying used or refurbished is the way to go, if the new one has one 256 nand
Top work Max Tech, just top work, screw the others. I love to see all the details.
Had anyone tested the 1TB M2 MacBook Pro? From what I have heard is that MacBook only has 1 SSD chip in it which will mean slower speeds.
From where? I thought the verge had a 1TB model and didn’t have any issues

Thank you guys for being honest and doing these tests. I hope this eats into the sales of this product - Apple needs to know that they will be called out on their BS. Super curious to see if this will be the case for the m2 Air as well.
By far, this is the most informative tech channel and you guys show all the situations that I would like my future MacBook to use. Keep it up!! 👍
Great! Very clear! Good job!
@@elytiis_th we will know for sure in two week's time.

Max you’re doing some proper reviewing!
The best way is M2 + 512 + 16RAM, but in that case better to take M1 Pro (14'')
Love your work. You guys are honest and will actually show Apple truths no matter good or bad.

This sort of stuff happens when u have a guy running Apple who's number one concern is huge profit margins. Everything else comes second.
$2 wholesale cost for the 256gb SSD and Apple charge $200. It’s absolutely scandalous that this is allowed. Price gouging on an epic scale.

From this video I can work out that the M2 MacBook Air is going to be a massive disappointment as it will likely have the same SSD issue and won’t have active cooling so will be throttled and the M1 will perform better over more tests
That is shocking, $2 for a NAND chip. For goodness sake Apple, just stick two in and make the base model 512GB. It is not worth the bad press.
Exactly, with the price hikes it would have been the perfect time to start transitioning to base to 512GB
