Man, the early and mid-nineties, what a time to be alive. These guys, Biohazard, Pantera, Machine Head just to name a few. The small town where I lived kids nearly killed themselves whenever a song like that was played in rock discos...
I also saw em live in Buffalo at project revolution in the early 2000s they were not on the main stage, but I was waiting to go to the main stage and I heard the opening bass and I was like no fuckin way I ran over and there they were I was like fuckin eh the lead at get gave me props when I came over to the stage fuck miss the 90s early 2000s
These guys were tight as hell, Live !! Saw them in Germany, when I was in the Army...They opened for Biohazard, and didn't even have the album in stores yet !! No one knew who they were, but they blew the fuckin' roof off that venue...Everybody lost their minds when these guys got about 30 seconds into their set !! The next band was Dog Eat Dog, and they could not follow Downset at all !!

Try to decribe the exat momont of my first time of this song Italy, Summer 1996, was 17 years old, my first time singer of a band from 6 mounths (trying to be a similar band) hot afthernoon near a closed school with an old "Fiat Uno" car and a self made wood panel with big speakers playing with a ball against a wall. I can feel now what i felt that day. Great song, great times.
I saw them play in LA back in the day and had a great conversation backstage with Rey… Solid guy. This was just before their first Euro tour with Biohazard. Definitely the real deal.
Gotta love how he drops like 4 or 5 awesome "F bombs" in the first 4 verses! haha! This brings me way back. days of Madball, SOIA, early Biohazard, ProPain ect. Great stuff.
I used to ride the bus with Ray Justice, the singer, almost every day. Got invited to Downset's very first show ever. The lyrics at 2:00 are about Zack De La Rocha from Rage against the Machine. All those guys hated RATM and knew they were hypocrites and phonies.
RATM spoke all that phony gangster stuff, implying they were street guys with gang credibility. The truth is the furthest thing from that. Zach De La Rocha and Tom Morello come from affluent families. Downset and Social Justice (their band before that) had REAL gang ties with CBS (Can't Be Stopped) and other gangs in So. Cal. They used to show up at Downset's shows and I was scared as hell. Ray was a super nice guy though. Downset hated them because RATM were poseurs trying to project a tough guy image when Downset and Social Justice were the real things.
It's in mostly the 1st album and what they used to say onstage. Look a the lyrics to Bullet in the Head talking about shooting 9s and living the street life. Settle for Nothing talking about being in prison and the product of a broken home. Bomb track talking about facing police brutality. Township Rebellion comparing South Africa with South Central LA. It's all BS, those guys never experienced any of those things. I was at their very 1st show ever as well and they posed with that gangster stuff in their first shows. They opened for Body Count in LA when BC shot the video and stills for their 1st record and they tried to play it all gangster. Ice T had real LA gang ties at the time. RATM are full of crap.
moonrunrs understood. by the time I started listening, it was all the political stuff (which they're also total hypocrites about). and I never saw them live to hear or see any posturing.
I remember seeing them with Uniform Choice, Slapshot, and Insted at the Country Club in Reseda. I actully saw them play there a few times. I saw Downset I think it was late 90's when they put on a free show at the Whiskey. Awesome show had my front tooth knocked out in the pit.
Read some comments concerning possible references to Rage in this song, and then listened to the original "Our Suffocation" version. Yeah, it's pretty clear who he was talking to...I wonder why the lyrics were changed in the self-titled album (probably due to legalities or record label - then again, Ray doesn't seem like the type to have the label tell him what to do)? I also wonder if they've (Rage & Ray/.downset.) patched up their differences...Huh. Anyone know about the early history of these bands in L.A.? Did Social Justice (early .downset.) play shows with Suicidal Tendencies?
Downset played an Inside Out tune when I saw them in the 90's. Don't know if they did it ironically or in jest or what. Maybe they were friends and fronted otherwise in public? They played with VOD btw and it was awesome! Rey busted out some breakdancing in the middle of their set haha
I remember finding this album in a "bargain bin" in 95' (when record stores were still a thing) I was 14 and going through that whole "anti-government" phase of my life still know every word
@ApprenticeLobotomist Thanks for sharing the story. Some friends and I got to shoot the shit with the downset crew after a couple of shows they played here in KC. Great guys. Very down to earth. I had a ton of respect for them before meeting them and talking to them only cemented it all. That band will always take me back to those days.
