- Welcome to Episode 1 of Season 2 of SG Angling. In this episode I travel to the mountains of West Virginia to Stonewall Jackson Lake in search for some big post spawn Musky. My plan was to fish shallow and fast despite the 54 degree water temps. Needless to say the plan came together and I did not leave disappointed.

I live here in wv, i was bass fishing once and i saw a 50 inch at least musky jump 3 feet out of the water and eat a bird.

Two things, always, always, always keep jumper cables in your boat they have saved my butt more than once. Also I have been really trying hard to work on my 8's this spring, something that I have learned its to reel up the line closer to that first eyelet of the rod so you have about 1-2" between the eylet and the leader. This will allow you to maintain more speed going into your 8 and trigger more lazy fish. Not at all trying to be preachy but that has helped my success exponentially this spring. Awesome video dude, looking forward to more musky stuff!

@@sgangling Thanks man, biggest thing with the jumpers is if your cranking battery dies then you can jump it from your TM battery, had to do that a couple of times last year.

Just found your channel. Been making my own tails for many years. I recommend a 7/0 Mustad 3551. Even on small tails. Bigger is better cuz you never know when ‘ol big shows up lol. Buy em in bulk packs no matter which one you use, saves some coin and you’ll use em. I always keep a few wires with the 7/0 already shrink wrapped on it in case a musky trashes the hot tail I’m using so I can remake it in the boat.
Thanks for watching. I agree to err on oversized the hooks. I personally prefer the 3x strong in case a big girl is hooked by only one hook of the trebble. I've seen the standard models bend. I would think that would be hard to do with a 7/0 but my motto is always better safe than sorry!

Thanks so much dude I appreciate the sub! The pov switching is actually still a manual process that happens during the editing process. I put all of the camera angles in different tracks and manually sync the audio from each clip so that it aligns. From there I just cut and switch whatever angle is best as the video rolls. The higher end editing programs have an auto sync which saves a bunch of time in this process so that will be a future investment for sure.
Wow that lake is right off of south 79. Not to far. 90 minutes from here. i have heard of it but that's about it.

Hey man. Yeah I'm aware of it but there is a horsepower limit which would make it very difficult since my motor is a 40 HP. Also the Musky population is declining drastically there because there are a group of guys that catch and keep every Musky out of there. Since I don't believe the WVDNR stocks it any longer its not what I would consider a population body of water. It's also pretty deep, clear and void of shallow structure.

I've got a 7-8 hr river float trip in WV I'd like to take you all on. There's been two 38 inchers caught on it two weekends in a row this past weekend. One by me and the other my brother. It's a great peaceful trip loaded with musky and smallies.
I can't get enough of WV fishing. So beautiful. So little pressure relatively speaking and such beautiful fish.
Especially this trip we do, no traffic noise for 6 hrs. Just cows mooing, an occasional tractor or side by side.
Look into the nets with the forgrip handle will help tons with single handed netting jobs.
Thanks for the suggestion because netting solo isnt easy. I could theoretically place a foregrip handle on the net handle itself. Which I probably should do.

First of all great job on recognizing and extrapolating a pattern. We had simular success doing the exact thing this spring. Secondly... i would cast those hooks into the pit of hell. This is just my opinion. And if you think they help you more by all means keep using them. But from my perspective, being that a muskys mouth isnt as convex as a basses i dont think those grab as good since the points are “pointed” in. I know some people who even bow the back hooks out on baits where muskys nip from the back. Giving them a better chance at sticking. As far as them bending out... ya, ive had it happen but it’s extremely rare if you use your button. Also good job on the eight
First of all thank you so much for watching and yes, when you can find a pattern it is so fun to execute and watch it come together.
Thank you also for your input on the hooks. I have spent a lot of time on this topic only because I have noticed so many Musky fisherman lose fish because of hooks bending out and sadly in some cases it was a PB. It happens when a larger fish is hooked by only one of the 3 hooks on the treble and then goes for a hard run. Since most fishermen set their drags too tight something has to go and often its the standard straight model hooks since there is a considerable amount of flex in them. The risk of this happening with a smaller straight model hook treble on a 35lbs + fish is much higher than you think especially if hooked by only one hook. Thumbing the spool is always a good way to avoid bend outs but a lot of amateur anglers forget to execute this in the heat of the moment especially when you've hooked the fish of a lifetime.
To your point on the nipping fish, you are right. However, because the hooks I use are wide gap the surface area of coverage on the hook tip itself is identical to a straight model treble despite the inward angle. That mixed in with the fact that you can get the hook tips sharper the inward angle and wider barb keeps fish pinned better. I have only lost one fish ever using them if you can believe that so until I see that success rate change I will still plan on using them. Yes I did. I reported all the data to the biologist and they had tagged that fish in that general area about a month and a half prior. After I released it he confirmed the fish lived.

What rod and reel combos do you use for bucktails ? Any recommendations
The best reels are a tranx 400 or an Abu garcia revo toro...this has been proven by guides who use them daily. I would focus on a higher gear ratio of 7:1:1 or 8:1:1 as you want to quickly retrieve...focus on a shorter 8-10" leader for wider figure 8's and a longer rod 8'6"-9'6" are best for wide figure 8's. A heavy rod is best to give you some backbone in the figure 8. You can use medium heavy but you do get a lot of flex in your rod in the 8 and that can make it more difficult. I love the st croix musky mojo rods. Excellent 👍
Do you WV muskie hunters ever throw top water baits? I'm just kind of curious because of all the WV muskie videos I've ver seen, I don't think I've ver seen a top water bait being thrown.

I wish I would have known other Muskie fisherman, especially guys with boats, and gotten out on the water. WV Muskie fishing is awesome and was one of the best kept secrets for a long time.

I'm guessing you travel to different destinations.. Do you get a hotel? Do you camp near the areas? What is your average stay time? And.. Yes.. This is very nosey.. What's the average cost of your stays?
My reason... I have a 8x20 cabin (basic) sink.. Shower.. Stove. Electric...out house.. on a well known WV creek/river for its musky fishing..off the ohio river. Im trying to calculate a fair price for what it is and possibly airbnb it to anglers.. And yes.. Profit from it a bit,the airbnb RUclips gurus say see what the competition pays.. But i can't find any...😕.Boat Ramp is Few miles down the rd.. Putting in dock this summer... Your input is appreciated
So the crazy part about my trips is that most of them are done in a day. Ill wake up at 4 be on the water at 630. Fish for 12 hours and go home. However, if I do stay overnight its usually at an air bnb or hotel but like you said they are few and far between in good fishing areas. Since I usually share the expenses with others Im willin to spend anywhere from 100-200/ night depending on how nice/convenient it is.
I fish a lot of the same waters you do here in wv I fish mostly the mon river and a few of its tribs looking for a new fishing buddy being that most people o know go once and don’t go again when they don’t catch anything If you wanna go sometime let me know
