A garden is the heart of any self-sufficient off-grid homestead, and we are so proud to have finally started ours! With so much going on with the shipping container build lately, it was hard to find the time to build this massive project. Luckily we had some friends in town from Berlin and the extra hands helped make things move along much faster.
Also incredible update from the seeds we planted just last week - they're already sprouting beautiful baby leaves. Seems like Lou picked the perfect spot for the garden to thrive :)
Thanks for being with us during this massive learning experience. We have so much to learn about gardening, but I'm just so happy we actually got seeds in the ground this year.
    Big hugs,
    Dana

It’s never too late to start! Even if you get no good harvests from the garden this year, the plants you do grow will build the biodiversity and good bacteria in your soil and build the foundations for healthy soil for years to come. The first year of gardening is always the hardest as you learn your climate and then the small little microclimates within your garden space and as everything establishes itself. All it takes is time. Even a “late” start is more time than waiting until next year would be. 😊

This is suuuuper encouraging, thank you so much for taking the time to share, Amalya ♥ That is a great way to think about it, that it is the foundation for later years, lots of happy biodiversity in the soil :) Wishing you a beautiful week ahead!

You can create a 45 day garden using quick growing non GMO, organic, heirloom seeds. We started our community garden in July and we are in a 6a growing zone with frost and snow starting as early as mid September.
Have a great time with your growing project.

I just love how you acknowledge Max and make him a part of everything you do. 😍 Such beautiful intentional parenting. ❤The planning dance is everything 😁 Could you expand on the cage idea of the blueberries and add additional posts to cover the entire garden and create a greenhouse for year-round gardening? Blessing to your family.

Sow hardy winter vegetables such as sprouting broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, winter cabbage and leeks in late spring or early summer as they take several months to reach maturity. They stand well through frosty weather and can be harvested throughout the winter months.

My adivice is be willing to learn, and do a greenhouse and get lots of adivice. Plant potatoes and onions first! Purchase from local Seed and feed store. My great grandfathers in the 1800s put large sticks crossing like an X around gardens to keep the Deer out. It works.

Wow awesome job! Just a tip for your potatoes, when a potato has multiple sprouts growing off it you can cut and divide the potatoes into smaller pieces so you get more potatoes!! Each sprout will grow its own bundle 😊 if that makes any sense lol

There's plenty of info online about what crops to plant mid Summer. NOT tomatoes! Root veg, cucumber, herbs that can be brought indoors when temps drop, salad makings if you have shaded garden areas which is a must have, carrots, etc. Google it for your local area and weather conditions. NOT tomatoes. 😅
    Best wishes.
PS. Be sure to plant a few fast growing deciduous trees around your contsiner home in Autumn! You need shade from the Sun and warm weather. Plus, the birds are singing right outside your windows! The Autumn foilage color is a beautiful bonus viewed right next to the house. I recommend a few broadleafed Maple Trees. Buy 5 year old saplings too. They're more vibrant and already look like small trees and not sticks.

Amazing! As so many already said, it’s never too late to start a garden. Rocket Salad is quick growing and makes a great pesto in autumn; there is some spinach varieties which go into soil only in August to be harvested in winter (that’s what I do in the Pyrenees) and berry bushes such as cassis etc actually go into the soil in autumn (if they are already winter hardy). Good luck & good growing!

Just look up your first frost date and talk to local gardeners. Roots and Refuge Farm is in zone 8a I think. You are in a lower zone. MI Gardener is also a great place to get seeds, especially for a northern garden.
Your days are getting shorter, which will impact growth too.

The garden looks amazing!! I would love to have raised beds like that one day. 🙂 You should have plenty of time left for a fall garden with cold hardy crops. Roots and Refuge Farm has a ton of great garden resources, including all kinds of info on fall gardening.
There are a lot of deer in my area (there's a herd of about 8-12 that sleep in our front field every night) and I've successfully been able to grow a beautiful garden with a 4ft "3D" fence. Basically, it's a woven fence (to keep out the smaller critters) with an additional 1-2 strand fence all the way around the exterior about 2-3 feet away from the woven fence. I guess they can't figure out how far the distance between the two is to jump over it.
Good luck with the garden! Can't wait to see more about it in future videos!

It's NEVER to late to start a garden. Squash plants are beasts, if you grow now , you'll have all kinds of DELICIOUS edibles. Zucchini! Pumpkin!
Next spring you can blow your own minds! I did, by making salsa completely from my own garden, a lifelong dream.
You have property- plant whatever trees you can! Apples?
This is an achievable dream in that climate, and I highly recommend doing what I did which was after mastering growing fruits and veggies, I surrounded the veggie garden with flowers.
Gardens are such a joy, if it's truly in your heart it becomes a passion you just want to take care of them- you enjoy it you by the hat, you buy the gloves you think about it all the time.. I went from being a condo dweller with houseplants, to having a garden so beautiful that people walking their dogs on the street would stop and tell me how lovely it was... When I started it it was only meant to feed me, but then I couldn't resist adding all those flowers. You will drive happiness and frustration in equal parts, but if you're committed to living off-grid, a family feeding Garden is an absolute necessity!

We love to see it! I feel like the first year is just getting the land set up. It isn't until the next year or year after that you can actually know enough to grow such abundance that it feeds a lot of people (at least that's what I'm telling myself about my first-year garden haha). So it's not too late! You're just getting ahead for next year!

Hi!! Love the video. On my family farm, we have a bunch of natural wildflowers and certain plants around the garden to help keep out certain animals. It's super friendly to the environment AND gorgeous when all the flowers bloom! Just something to consider! I also think that talking to local farmers or even any Amish Families in the area would help you understand the land! The Amish help me and my family so so much when it comes down to understanding that land

Once you get your gardening feet under you, you can think about what ways you could protect smaller areas of the garden into the colder weather so you can extend your fall garden veggie harvest a while longer. That could be a store bought 4x4 mini greenhouse or plastic stretched over a frame or window sashes on a frame that closes in the area. Increase your chances of success by planting the stuff that can handle cold weather better-lettuce, chard, kale, cabbage, broccoli, etc. Remember, seeds WANT to grow. We can help with the right area, water and soil nutrition. Once thing I wish I had done earlier in my 40 yrs of gardening was to give myself permission to play and experiment with my garden-see whats possible in MY space-cause they're all different.

Yae, your first garden!!! Some of what you planted should do ok in the time you have. It all depends on where you live and the luck of the weather. The deer should not jump that, but if they do, tie sparkly something along the top and that will stop them.
