    For those who don't get what "Talking Hands" means: In Cantonese it translated as "Let the hands do the talking" which means "sparring". Wong is good at "free-style sparring" with different styles(not necessarily limited in Chinese Kung Fu), thus he was named "The King of Sparring".

    There is no useless or best style. It's all about the right teacher, the right student and the right mental approach. I really respect master Wong, he was such a selfless person. I had the honor to see Master Phillip Bayer myself. Master Wan from Beijing also impresses me a lot.

    So basically the reason why Bruce Lee and Jai Harman are such good fighters is because of their lineage both trace back to WSL Wing Chun. I agree, traditional Wing Chun needed to be reformed for the late 20th century. If you look at most good Wing Chun fighters, they are either modified or JKD inspired fighters with a strong WC foundation.
    In my opinion that is the true essence to complement Wing Chun and make it shine these days.

      Well, no one ever wins, as do all sports and athletes, start from beginning they all comes a long, hard way.
      As do the Title implies, he challenged numerous sort of martial artists, and for this he is"famous".

    P.s Wing Chun is a Fighting System you have to learn for many many hours a day, it's not a fighting style what you will learn in a few months.
    Its complexity and understanding are of high level, you have to train hard for it, before you will understand it.

    • @smartresearchwingchun494
      @smartresearchwingchun494 9 лет назад +4

      Many hours a day and unable to learn in a few months' time? Does this even make sense to you? Let's recreate the condition of the ancient times whereby wars were frequently happening. Let's imagine you are a new soldier who's going to be enlisted to the military to fight the enemies. Your enemies are learning Ju Jitsu, Karate, Boxing, Muay Thai and other styles of Chinese martial arts; your side is learning the current mainstream Wing Chun. The enemies are training their soldiers and they will attack your side within 3 to 6 months' time. Are you trying to tell the entire world that you are going to tell the enemies to postpone the attack to few years later? Is this statement of yours regarding Wing Chun realistic or unrealistic? If it wouldn't apply in the ancient times, it won't apply now too. You guys are simply doing Wing Chun because of propaganda, not because you have seen anyone using it effectively or realistically. Therefore, something must be scientifically wrong with the instruction globally.

    • @RobertVogelWingChun
      @RobertVogelWingChun 9 лет назад +2

      Sorry, i couldn't let this go, are you really blind?
      I said many hours!!!!!!!!, not years!!!!!!! are you really so blind to sit so much behind your computer?
      Let me explain more simple for you.
      You train 2 days a week.
      1 day you train for 2 hours.
      so two days are 4 hours, you still follow me?
      I train 8 hours a day.
      For 5 days.
      That is 40 hours a week.
      Result, i will kick your ass to the Moon.
      Find the real masters in wing-chun dumbass, you will only feel it and be convinced
      if you train with them, i don't give a damn about your mainstream wing-chun and what you see on you tube.
      I'm talking about realmasters and people who really trained there ass off,you get it now?or are you still blind and keep posting dumb answers, or maybe you kick on that, go into politics then, i think they will like you there.
      Greetings from Holland

      ***** - You can't train your natural reflexes in a short time. Robert is right. It seems, that you have no clue about the wing chun system and what it's meant for (not for competetion, not for war, just self defence) . and it seems, that you think it would be not very effective, which is totally bullshit.

    • @smartresearchwingchun494
      @smartresearchwingchun494 9 лет назад +1

      Desperadio Wrong. We have records of training up someone in Wing Chun within 2 hours plus to spar with someone who was trained in other martial arts for many years. Your mainstream Wing Chun could train someone for decades yet the trainees still could not spar realistically. How do you explain this? Something has to be wrong with the instructions globally, right? Hope that you are using your basic thinking skill. :)

    • @Desperadiou
      @Desperadiou 9 лет назад +1

      ***** - I even don't know what you mean with the word mainstream wing chun and for some other onesided views it is hard to take you serious. Wing Chun is a style which develops and there exists many different styles worldwide, so there are not such things like global instructions. The sparring, as competetion like in boxing, is not part of the training. Just lat sao and chi sao for developing reflexes, combining techniques... and when you master this, you can go on with free fightig. In the origin wc system there are no competetion elements scheduled (it's also not sports, it's an art) so I can't see the point in comparing it with other sport fighting styles. And it is neurologically impossible to learn wc in 2 hours. This is bullshits finest. You really should practise it, instead of posting some theoretical nonsense in the internet ;)

    Sorry guys, a really stupid question. What's the difference between ving tsun and Wing chun? I'm a beginner and starting very late.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 8 лет назад

      +MegaLochgelly One is the modified (ving tsun) and the other, the complete traditional. You see, the modified is missing key elements that make it work properly. These elements are proper footwork (the circle inside the triangle), proper way to close the distance, using initial contact and an ANGLED step to the outside of the attacking arm with a body rotation square (as per one of the ten concepts) and the TEN CONCEPTS, which not only dictate proper response, but give the system it's flexibility (ALL TEN MUST BE USED AT ONCE OR THE SYSTEM IS WEAKENED). WSL was taught the modified system, but was extremely smart. He realized that the system was lacking in the proper footwork and the proper way to close the distance, which is wing chun's strong point. So he develop a way to do that. He uses a saying, Loi Lau Hoi Sung, Lat Sau Jik. This translates to the following edict:
      Loi Lau- This means to "engage the enemy, stay with them and form a bridge with the attack, intercepting the path it takes."
      Hoi Sung- This means to "take advantage of their errors, following their mass of center when they withdraw, attacking the opponent without worries."
      Lat Sau Jik- This means when the hands are released, ATTACK DIRECTLY WITHOUT HESITATION! (Very important!). All this information is in the book by Master Allen Gibson called Beginning Wing Chun.
      This edict is the basis for his system and overcomes one of the flaws of modified wing chun, which is closing the distance properly.

    • @MegaLochgelly
      @MegaLochgelly 8 лет назад

      So Wing Chun is better or ving tsun?

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 8 лет назад

      Wing chun. The traditional is complete, with the proper footwork, proper way to close the distance, and the ten concepts. If you have to do modified, then look for the Wong Shun Leung system. It is almost as good, but is still missing proper footwork and the ten concepts. I would suggest you do some background checks if you decide to go to a wing chun school to see if they do realistic training, sparring with other schools and also other wing chun schools, have grappling, weapons and multiple opponent training, which completes the training.

      Great question, but it's similar in a way to asking about Cus D'Amato and Tyson. The better fighter isn't always the one doing the fighting. Without Cus D'Amato, Tyson would just have brute strength and anger. Without Wong Shun Leung, Bruce Lee would be a scrappy little teenager without any direction for his mischievous behavior.

    With due respect Most Masters instill confidence in their students not necessarily great fighting skills,. One issues is that Wing mostly train withing themselfs and this limits the persecption of attack. Wing Chun .well I would say . .this works best only when you can street fight well first then is best for defense ( I trained WC for 4 years about 4 hours a week. W.C . . . it all looks good choreographed but in reality it is different and most people use weapons now days & U never know what some is going to pull out, so it is better to practice non violent escape methods.

    • @jamesding440
      @jamesding440 5 лет назад +1

      In some respects, I agree. However, in my view, it is what we want to make out of the art we practise. If we subscribe to WC being a "concepts" based martial arts, then it is not an issue to cross train with other martial arts to see how we can adapt to the current trend of "fighting". I don't deny that the current training regime of chi sau or forms has their limitations, but I do think that they lay the foundations of what WC is. The rest, is up to the practitioner.

    The historical consensus about a southern shaolin existing as a fact? I dont think so. By the time the Manchus came to power, the shaolin fighting force in Henan province was gone. What challenge did they pose, nevermind a "southern" one? It seems more likely that the "heaven and earth" societies of the time co-opted the Shaolin name and fame for their own anti-manchu purposes. There were Buddhist temples in the south but it doesnt seem like they had a paramilitary component of soldier monks like Shaolin. They didnt cite any sources on this video. I cite professor meir shahar's the shaolin monastery.

    ...not the same as "education" or "educated"
    Each successful block of an attack would disturb the opponent. Many continuous successful blocks would be many disturbances. This should (would) cause imbalance in the opponent. That gives the wing chun user an advantage. If the user is fast enough, the practice of wing chun as blocking method can disperse arrows and spears, not only an attacker's punches and kicks.
    JKD jeet kun do is to intercept, or block (intercept fist way). Unless one is the instigator of a fight, it would be best and logical to block any attacks and find the right moment to counterattack should a counterattack be necessary.

    I dont want to be a smarta..., but i dont get it why ppl still write the name as "Wong Shun Leung" in 2021.
    This was the way the name was written 50 or 100 years ago, but not today anymore.
    Its either in kantonese Wong Shun-leung or Wong Shunleung, or in mandarin Huang Chunliang.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wong_Shun-leung
    The Yale romanization has been overtaken by Hanyu Pinyin, which is more evolved and better understandable for western people.
    In chinese and korean the names basically consist of 3 single symbols, and they are written together without a space between them. If you translate them word to word it would be:
    WongShunLeung
    But this is not common in the west. But even Wong Shun Leung can be confusing since many ppl with think Shun is a middle name (like John Fitzgerald Kennedy), and the given name would only by Leung.
    Wong Shun-leung or Huang Chunliang shows clearly the 2 names Shun/Chun and Leung/Liang belong together which they do.

      @@jaiharman1 Hi. I used Google translator and i hope the translation was correct. :-D
      No, you misunderstood my point. I know the cantonese writing is right because WSL came from Hong Kong where the people speak cantonese.
      My point was the writing of his given name "Shun Leung" is not up to date.
      I give you an example:
      A) Wong Shun Leung
      B) Wong Shun-leung
      C) Wong Shunleung
      In B and C it is easy to see the two names of his given name, Shun and Leung, belong together.
      While in A many western people can be confused. I know you in China dont have middle names, but we in the West do.
      - Wong Shun Leung
      - John Fitzgerald Kennedy
      If a Westerner reads this, he most likely will think "Shun" is a middle name, and only "Leung" is his given name.
      But if the name is written as "Shun-leung" (with hyphen) or "Shunleung", its clear "Shun" is not a middle name, and "Leung" is not a given name, and the two names belong together.
      That was my point.
      Best regards

      +eyewishwalrus There were four kings in the Ip Man era. Chu Shong Tin is called the King of Siu Nim Tao; Wong Shun Leung is called the King of Talking Hand. "Talking hand" means "asking for a fight". Wong Shun Leung liked to go to other martial arts schools to challenge their Sifu s. Chu Shong Tin is known for his thorough understanding of the entire Wing Chun fighting system which originates from the first form Siu Nim Tao.

      +eyewishwalrus Not totally true. Wing Chun is both soft and hard. Before any contact, you need to be relaxed like water. Once there is any contact, you need to apply force. Of course, you don't apply blind force. You need to apply wise force using your reflects. What do we mean by "wise" force? Wise force is based on simple physics principles of center of gravity, torque and force and biological principles of joint and muscle movements.

    Ugh....Listening to this debate is ridiculous. First of all we have no idea of who existed even if there are records. A lot of these people kept them selves out of records I mean what would you even consider a record something written down in the 1800s LOL? Ridiculousness five elders you want to believe in the five elders because someone wrote that down but you can't believe and the other thing because no one wrote that down. Ridiculous. I've trained with all those sorts of people out there and there are so many stories and so many secrets A lot of these people were teaching modified stuff to their own people, the Chinese and records are purposely kept vague. This is not Nazi Germany LOL which gave up all of the actions and same with Cuba LOL, "person took a shit at 4:30 PM while it was raining and there was a cardinal in the tree on June 13, 1924"....lol
    WC is made up of a lot of arts because all of those guys were friends and everybody was looking for a system that wouldn't take 30 years to master and learn how to handle yourself because people were dropping dead. All of these people were aiming toward the same goal. To mention CLF is kind of a fart. Because that's like 3 million forms and low stances and absolutely really no influence. WC is closest with it's very straightforward honestly the whole group of Fukien Style kung fu, and often a lot of Hakka Kuen as well... Which encompasses the previous and actually has influenced it and that goes all the way back to Mongolian guards. The biggest relatives and you're confusing CLF with something like Jow Gar. GG is actually a close relative even though the forms are complex and may look northern lights CLF which is Southern and looks northern, when they fight they fight very much like WC and all the rest of those things. Believe it or not the WC guys they all cross trained a lot of the other arts like say of Wudang. Especially and even though it's northern, Hsing-i. The footwork of course is performed differently but the way they think and the way they fight is very similar. As well, we know there are 1 million forms of WC and if you don't know that you're clueless. From Sum Nung, tube infinite. Shaolin versions northern versions whatever the hell you want to say. The closest relatives to WC are the Fukien and Hakka arts.
    White Eyebrow, Chu gar, jk tong long "Southern mantis", Leung Ying, Fukien White crane, Jow Gar, Hung gar, Fu Jow pai, Five animals systems, and on and on. And obviously WC may have very similar motions and ideas of vectors and strategy and how they move with root, And the feeling of the arms, and legs, but WC is the only one that really takes it a different direction kind of and really is like a skeleton that can be turned into anything. It is much more of the scientific approach that is kind of an empty shell and if the student has intentions are only to just fight ...he won't get very far.
    The funny thing is WC, with a decent teacher and an average student with in six months they are handling themselves very well in real situations LOL I know for a fact because I've seen it during the Mariel boatlift lol. But it is so much deeper and it is such a Taoist and Zen Buddhist....Confucian as well. WC provides for the thinker, a tremendous seed that is planted that allows the practitioner to develop into this beautiful tree that is shaped in a very particular and personal manner but still has the same roots :-) Look all of this talk is ridiculous everybody knows what martial arts is about watching these films and looking at history I mean it's a waste of time. The way you're going to find out the real deal and so on is by training very hard and lucky enough to have a good teacher, traveling and you will learn secrets as they are exposed. WC is a very reticent form. I have to say studying all of those are it's above my first and favorite being WC, there are a lot of people that do WC like shit. They just want to be able to move their arms around really fast and be able to do chi sao All day and play tag game. Movement, root, finding your center, your breath everything ....:those things are so fundamental to this art and if they are not learned very well you're not going to do well. You're not going to do well anywhere but especially not in WC. Watching documentaries and things like that in talking about whether or not a Buddhist mistress existed or not is like entry-level childish or early freshman time study of the beginning of WC. It doesn't matter you just get a general idea and the stories told however is told you that's it.
    Don't read this crap, practice! Slowly and with the correct intention.

    Looks like other styles like Kung fu, where it’s only designed to fight other practitioners who know the drills and stand still with no resistance while you chain punch them 20 times. That’s why it looks great in the movies, because it’s like a dance where both parties no the steps. This style against MMA would be the equivalent of a ball room dancer trying to dance with Hip hop dancer. Which is what a real fight is like, when your opponent is unpredictable.

    Come on, man, that is TOTALLY inaccurate! There was no such person as Ng Mui or Wing Chun. There are NO records of their existence. • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 8 лет назад +1

      Yes, he was a great master and someone who actually understand the inner workings of wing chun. And to be fair, there was no Ng Mui or Wing Chun. There are no records of them ever existing.

    • @kobe51
      @kobe51 8 лет назад +4

      I too have heard from respected Wing Chun practitioner/historian Robert Chu that there was no Ng Mui or Yim Wing Chun and the style was certainly not developed from watching one, lone animal battle. I think this whole 'womanly' art that only uses techniques and no strength is a marketing ploy, the same malarky that the Gracie fanatics say about their God, Helio Gracie.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 8 лет назад +3

      Right, that was just a rouse, to keep the Manchurian government off the trail of the Shaolin temple, where they trained and developed wing chun. It was designed by the five elders, and include the best of white crane, white eyebrow, choy li fut, hung gar and shaolin. Each elder added the best of his system, and all extraneous movements were taken out to make the system more efficient, effective, and it also cut the time it took to master in half. No, that part is correct. We don't use strength, but deflection, footwork, and the ten concepts, which not only dictate proper response, but give the system it's flexibility and take out all flaws that are in other systems.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 8 лет назад

      What is CLF? Traditional wing chun is a complete system, including stand up, grappling, anti-take down techniques, locks and throws, weapons and even multiple opponent and pressure point training. Bruce Lee only knew 2/3rds of the modified system, so he didn't know the whole system.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 8 лет назад

      Yes, it is a complete system, although it isn't taught that way in many modified schools. And it is composed of five systems, Choy li fut, hung gar, white crane, white eyebrow and shaolin, from the five elders of the Shaolin Temple.

    Documentary or propaganda of myth and folklore? If the Wing Chun that they were doing was indeed efficient, the result would have been repeatable. But if we look at the current result of Wing Chun, how often do we see Wing Chun practitioners doing clumsy and unrealistic martial art? And how often do we see them being defeated by non-Wing Chun practitioners? Analyze things before you believe in them.

    Boxers can easily knock out Kung Fu masters, regardless of styles; e.g., Wing Chun, Tai Chi, or anything charactered as "Chinese". Here is why. These Kung Fu are traditional martial arts designed and developed for ancient battle fields with spears, swords, and shields, not for bare hand fighting. Since Manchu emperors of Qing Dynasty forbid average people to own and operate weapons, Kung Fu is then developed as an alternative way to exercise of the weapon-based martial arts without using weapons. As a comparison, modern martial arts are designed and developed purely for bare hands fighting. Kung Fu is not as useful as boxing in bare hands fighting, just like Jeep cannot perform as well on paved roads, regardless how beast it is like when off-roading.
