This work was inspired by the legendary American patriot and hero of the Revolutionary War. Movements include: Intrada, Intermezzo and The Rangers. James Curnow's musical craftsmanship is once again evident in this impressive piece for intermediate bands.

We have no oboe we have a very small band of 23 people for marching season and like- 20 or less for concert.....including middle school... Our schedule is weird our school has Band 1st period then the middle school has 2 periods for our 1st period so we have 2 sets of middles schoolers. The high school leaves at like 9:45. So yeah.... For high school students we have- like still 20 or 15 very small. We have 4 clarinets.
5 trumpets.and yeah just very small.

My class played this with the eighth grade band in SEVENTH GRADE. This is typically about a grade four piece. I should have only been playing 2nd grade songs at the time. Also, the year prior to that was the Covid school year, so band just wasn’t as high quality. There were only two first trumpets, and I was one of them, and our band actually played phenomenally. It was our best band concert, and I look back on that with pride.

Playing this first Trombone. 3rd movement is just lame to me while playing because most of it is just 8th notes and playing just those in 1, rest rest, 4, 1. 2nd movement is awesome, and I just wish the first movement is longer because I LOVE the theme in that one, and if it were explored and developed more, it would make an outstanding piece for level 3.
If I were the composer, I would make the first movement even longer (as I said) and have a really good climax before that moment that happens on measure 28. I would make it a sonata form with one theme (good start with my journey as composer for symphonic work).
2nd movement: Do not touch it, but I would make the middle section and climax work less with the theme and more of an aimless ambience.
3rd movement: Lots of changes are needed. Theme needs a change, less trumpet emphasis, make it longer, I could go on, and totally make a transition from the first 3/4 of the movement to the C major modulation, and even change the key signature (I don't know why Curnow decided "Oh I'ma be lazy and stick to my signature" but it would not have hurt the piece at all). Only thing for the ending I would change is to make it have a horn rip and make the Tubas just blast while the bells chime.
But here's a thing I love about this piece. While it may not be the best composed work (we're talking someone who composes generally for beginner music) is the emphasis on the themes for each movement. If you are are a striving composer trying to find a theme and have a piece that emphasizes a theme, this will be a really good way to go. Most pieces by amazing composers today usually go by form and motifs rather than full theme.
