What if you were FORCED into being historical in Hearts of Iron 4? What if you played the Great War Redux mod in HOI4 as Austria-Hungary, the worst nation in the game, and could only use the accurate historical designs?

I've been on a HOI4 binge of using only the historical presets given by Paradox, alongside accurate, historical division organization. Can I do the same as the Austro-Hungarians in the wonderful WW1 mod Great War Redux, and defeat the Entente?

The addition of Historical presets into Hearts of Iron IV was an awesome thing for massive history nerds like myself. Now, I play REALLY historically, using only the stupid tanks and planes that happened in real life! I'm aiming to do this with EVERY country in the game (or at least every major) so let me know a good suggestion down in the comments for more countries to play!

The Empire is divided, there are not enough people to plant potatoes, Covid-1918 breaks out and the emperor is looking for excuses to commit suicide... This is definitely The Good Ending.
For autonomy of the various austro hungarian peoples, definitely! For number of lives saved... not so much :/
Make sure to watch this video again 👍
I thought that was the Prussians.
ah yes, the wehrmacht, famous for their role in the great war
Yeah I fucked up there
@@Aldrahillsehr silly
the austro-hungarian army was actually (partly) called the wehrmacht for some reason
@@OesterreichUngarischeMonarchiewehrmacht just translates to 'defense force' or something like that, so it's a generic enough term to be used I think
@@komar7022 No, it's kind of a name more than a decriptive word. And it's specifically a WW2 word only & wasn't used before or after really. It's kind of like calling the US forces in WW1 'Union Army". While if you take it literally technically all US armies before and since the US Civil War were 'union armies', the word (as a name) is only used in the context of the civil war
This mod feels like the prequel to a more historically accurate Kaiserreich.
Right?!
Fun fact, the flag with the Austrian and Hungarian flags combined to make Austria Hungary is not their official flag. In reality, they didn't really have one, as Austria and Hungary had very close but separate governments. The closest thing they used as their official flag was the black and yellow flag meant to represent Austria.
The Austrian Part of the AUH Flag was actually the coat of arms of the Austrian Navy
@@user-dy2cl1ss8dHungary had a navy?
@@johnnotrealname8168 Yep. Under the command of none other than Miklos Horthy himself. And Austro-Hungarian navy was not as shitty as one may suppose: They were generally successfull in keeping Entante away from Adriatic and in waging submarine war in the Mediterranean. Also a bit if fun trivia - Their most successfull U-boat captain was Georg von Trapp (yes, *_that_* von Trapp) with more that 60000 tonns of shipping sunk).
@@090giver090 Wait the singing guy?
@@johnnotrealname8168 Yep.
31:07 Not only did Fance fall before Russia, they almost fell before Belgium because that event usually pops when Belgium caps
I think the whole Kaiserjager thing is this: "The Kaiserjäger were often confused with the Tyrolean Kaiserschützen, who belonged to the k.k. Landwehr, and were part of the regular armed forces of Austria-Hungary. The confusion arose from the decree of April 1917, in which Emperor Charles I granted the title Kaiserschützen to the Tyrolean state rifles. (The state rifles, known as Landesschützen or Kaiserschützen, were mountain troops and wore a different uniform.".
Otherwise, I love the historical division template videos. Austrian border with Lombardy and Venice look really good too lol.
Oh that’s really cool that makes sense :) and thank you, I’m glad you enjoy them! I’m so happy there are so many people that enjoy this kind of silly historicity :D

Just a heads up, The King Ferdinand on the plane is Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria, it is written in the event's details there
Croat historian here to clatify few things
Firstly, We did fight on the eastern front, but were notoriously dissobedient and inefective, as we had no will to die for lands that are not our own, which is also why we fought tooth and nail in the Alps, as losing there meant losing our lands and people in them.
And two, you chose right for the fedealist reform, near the end when everything was collapsing for A-H, a federal reconstruction was proposed for the empire, but at that point the idea was abandoned by the minorities (who were actualy all for it until the end of 1917), as they seeked independant countries. (luckly for you, Germany this time around actualy won you the war, so all is good now 😂)
All in all, great video, allways love to see these!
Basically the Edit: "only" two loyal ethnic groups in the Empire were the Poles and the Croats...also the jews.

Aside from Italy.
The whole romania thing was literally as historically accurate as you can get, even your reaction was historically accurate lol
Love it when that happens xD
Of course Hungary will have food protests. It's in the name.
Historical Preset as Serbia for ww1 would be cool
I might be wrong here but from what I remember from when I watched Indy Niedell...The Serbian response to the austrian Ultimatium... was basically "Yeah uh, we're agreeing with this...but uh you'll have to take some of this stuff up with a different branch of our government"
Which I just think is kind of funny given the whole idea of the terms was to make them so unreasonable that no one would agree...
and then the Serbians basically did agree...
Agree to what? Submitting to austria?
@@The-Enemy-Medic In hindsight it might have been referring to how Serbia did agree to **SOME** of the demands
IIRC they refused the final point of letting the Habbies investigate the terrorism themselves because it is essentially giving up policing your own country (sovereignity and such) and wanted to investigate themselves (and if the austrian army is in the country, or even just a police squad, what exactly can you do to make them leave if they want to stay?
@@maxwellgarner3445 Didn't they also tell the austrians that they had to send that demand to a different branch of the serbian government

My dude even your ads are really fun. I usually feel the overwhelming urge to skip them but not yours. Also I care about that one sergeant as if he was my great great uncle. And any other very specific probably unneeded historical or otherwise fact.
Oh damn dude thank you so much! That is so kind of you to say! The ads mean that I can spend the time it takes to make these videos, so I’m really eager to make them engaging and fun :D and YES SAME that sergeant is so cool to me, I was so pleased to delve more into it and learn about it!

Just try the Ottomans. I dare you.
When at the start you talked about using historical Austrian plans i almost thought you planned to dig up historical offensive plans lol. Sounds like smth you would do
I uh… did. I didn’t mention it much, but I did actually do offensives on the roughly correct dates where possible xD I had to adapt more as the game went on though. Spent way too much time on the research for this - I never knew so much about Austria Hungary!

Historical Mengukuo when
The event with the first airplane flight is about King Ferdinand of Bulgaria.
If I had to guess the kaiserjäger’s are probably classed as mountaineers because that’s HOI’s answer to land based special forces as they only have 3 special force types
That makes sense, but they weren’t really special forces, just sort of picked troops you know?
@@Aldrahill yeah it goes to show that HOI4’s army system just isn’t really built to take into account these special cases. Everything’s either a normal division or some special forces thing regardless of it’s real world role. Though some mods like RT56 do expand land based armed forces quite a bit
Keep up the good work buddy!!👍
This was one of the best vids in the series thus far!

You bet! Next couple aren’t historical, but then they go back to history :)
Actually the Austro-Huungarian Navy was quite good for the era, being the 5th largest in the world, well trained and regimented, and with some decently modern warships.
Really? A vestige of the Emperor's brother?
You should definetly try the United UMC mod, it adds a lot of depht to both historical and alt-history paths
I would so love to see you play modern 20xx armies with IRL divisional structure.

@@Aldrahill THANK YOU MAN🙏🙏🙏🙏
Personally I believe that you should create historical tanks and planes if the preset is a-historical or not there, because that would help you delve deeper into the history of different planes tanks and such
Before I watch the video, I hope it will contains some famous car division and bicycle ones too! Also, do with WW2 Hungary also, they had some very terrible divisions (20. Infantry Division).
9:00 - “Mein Franzle”…..lol.
I used the correct Austrian diminutive! Was very proud of that xd
you could also do it with the historical number of divisions
Play the sultanate of Aussa with historical divisions
1:25 you did not just forget the poles
21:37 Ruck-Zuck actually means „in a fast manner“. It was probably meant sarcasticall as it was so slow to reload, if I understood that right
Ohhh I thought it meant back and forth!
Here's a challenge that would be extremely difficult. WW2 Germany with WW1 units. Cav, infantry, and artillery with maybe a smattering of biplane type planes if those possible. Any tanks would have to be limited to a handful of heavy tanks as 'landship' infantry support
I'm pretty sure the kaiserjäger are mountaineers, because that kinda represents a more elite unit
From what I understand, it was either the Prime Minister or the head of the army who wrote up the demands to Serbia after Ferdinand's assassination knowing they could not comply. On top of a lot of other things that got the populace pissed. I genuinely think he wanted to overpower the monarchy to become a military dictator.
The royal family, meanwhile, had members advocating for federalization. Giving more autonomy to the different ethnic regions of the empire.
So the self-governence option near the end of the war you got would definitely have been a possible historical choice had Austria-Hungary won. Though we can't know for sure. There'd definitely be infighting amongst the elite about it.
Both heirs to the Throne wanted some form of self-government for the various ethnicities and could speak the various languages too. I think it was the Foreign Minister who wrote up the demands. The Head of the Army was just very belligent and hated Serbia.
I was thinking that a historical spain game could be fun. Seeing how much you can get done in WW2 with a few troops.
Historical Spain means basically no playing :P
Franz Joseph's brother was a good Naval Reformer. Edit: 10:29 The Household Cavalry are actual soldiers by the way. They do tours of duty.
I was exited for austria hungary but can you play black ice italy am sure it would be something special
1:39 Funnily enough, Austria was actually very industrialized historically. The 4th most in europe, above Italy and Russia.
It's not that it was very industrial, it's just that everyone other was even more agrarian
It was czechs actually.
It was so smart to opress czechs, most of austria-hungary industry. So smart, that czech were joining foreign legions and making whole divisions from them.
@@foreignfat6009The Czechs were not really oppressed the Emperor did try his best...they had voting rights in Parliament for example.
Austria and Prague and that was about it.

That outa be stupid enough of a challenge for you lol
You should do historical Poland or historical Ukraine presets in the 1918 start for Great War: Redux! Playing Poland is one of my favorite things to do in the mod, and Ukraine is sometimes a fun challenge.
Oh wow does that even work properly? That’s interesting…
@@Aldrahill Yes, it does! Maybe it's 1919 start? I'm not quite sure, I know it's at least in the original Great War mod.
What happens if you choose the option for Karl I to abdicate? Does his 4 year old son Otto Habsburg take the throne under a regent or something?
Ohhh that’d be interesting!
Yup, it would be cool. I had an opportunity to talk with Otto, he always was hungarian inside, so maybe Hungary wouldn't left the empire.
Ok, I have another idea for challenge. Can you do "switzerlake" but reversed (take only coastal provinces)?
It’s actually surprisingly easy, thanks to naval invasions :D

Adrahill! Love you man, but another historian here to do a correction. Franz Ferdinand was not the son of Franz Joseph, but his nephew. Since Franz Joseph's only son (the actual heir apparent), Crown Prince Rudolf, committed suicide in 1893, with Ferdinand's father Karl Ludwig died in 1896 of Typhoid, that left Ferdinand.
