Nice job. For your information, you shouldn't have sanded the outside of the transformer. The laminations are insulated from each other to prevent eddied currents in the core and unnecessary heating. By sanding them off they are all most likely shorted together. This is the reason you never see a cast single piece transformer core. It would be cheaper to make then this way, but they wouldn't work very well. Drilling and tapping the cores is also not a good idea. Think about it this way: the current flowing the the transformer core is current that could have been flowing through your wires.
That's only on the surface where they are sanded, so internally there will be little eddy current. Should be ok. It will be noticeable in excessive heat in the core if there's too much eddy current. Nicely pointed out there, it shows you have good observational skills.
It truly is an awesome design. However if you want to see another homemade spot welder, check out Dan Gelbarts version, which is also seriously cool: ruclips.net/video/82Iil0fFN9Y/видео.html
yes, drilling and tapping several holes right into the iron core is so professional that not even the shadiest chinese-made spot welder would dare to do that...
@@olivervoss3196 Enlighten me. The holes make the transformer less effective and less efficient because the path for the magnetic flux is disturbed. But as long as the result still works it should be ok, right? Am I overlooking a hazard that's created by the holes?
You know, every diy spot welder video has a section where they spot weld washers together. This is the first time I've seen the washer flower, props to you . this is a sweet video.
Grant Thompson, the King of Random (may he rest in peace), made one without the need to weld anything. Yours is amazing but I am mentioning it because this reminds me of his build from back in the day.
Спасибо за идею. Повторил, практически, один в один. Работает, но быстро нагревается. Thanks for the idea. Did almost one on one. Works but heats up quickly.
Definitly Ill do this build some day (got an old broken microwave oven for this). One thing I should change is how to activate it, use a pedal switch instead so I would have both hands free to hold the pieces and turn it on with my foot. Liked and suscribed!
What a machine best homemade spot welder I’ve seen on RUclips by far 🙌🏻 Just wish you guys would upload more often but hey worth the wait Could say this video was spot on 🙌🏻
@@zumbazumba1 wait until you get all the parts as scrap ... and wait ... and wait ... and wait ... and wait ... and wait ... and wait oh, wtf, who am I kidding? Time is money, too! :D
One improvement I can see for this, is to have a foot release to free both hands, and not have someone else to open the jaws. Started making one a while ago, but the vids then, had you grind the transformer apart to remove the coil in one go. This way is so much better, as I don't have to work out how to reassemble the transformer casings.
I new it was coming! Was waiting patiently😏👌👏👏👏 I'm know all of us subscribers are thinking, what is 0119 gonna be🤔. Me. I request a time machine. I wanna go back to the 90's and buy a container load of regular fit jeans.
The magnetron (the component that produces the microwave radiation) was not included in the build, so no issues for pacemakers. Otherwise, people with pacemakers would have to stay away from everything that has transformers, especially those humming big green boxes outside.
you have an awsome ability to bring thoughts to fruition, the factory ones that I ran had a foot pedal so that you had both hands free to locate the work and then actuate it by foot. But you probably already considered that.
Mine is made with the same principle. I added a foot pedal ( dirt cheap from China) and a relay. It's in plastic housing, though as I don't like the idea of 220 VAC and a secondary with 150-200 A in a metal housing. Works flawless... :)
The day you're in the shop thinking about your next build, I'd love to be able to read your mind for just 1 hour. Btw, a foot control would be a nice addition to this piece. *Well done.*
First time seeing this channel. You are too smart dude. I think we can all say that this is such an achievement to have this level of skill. Subscribed.
Ima make this one thankz. This and that vice (hydraulic) ya made a while back are two of yr very best! Ima use the vice i made (of yrs) to hold all the stuff while i weld it. Once again thanks. Oh! I forgot to tell ya.. been a fan for a while now.
It's not actually a big problem the way they did it. At least as long as the inside of the core (where the windings are) is not ALSO shorted in some places.
@@Basement-Science Sure, it's not as bad as a dead short, but it's like using a solid iron core with high induced eddy currents and subsequent losses. Could have just held it down with a couple brackets.
@@hzmeister9596 NO it is not. There needs to be a complete conductive loop in the iron laminations for it to become *_SOMEWHAT_* like a short circuit. All you get by shorting laminations together on the outside is an (electrical) OPEN loop in the core, so no eddy current flows *_between_* laminations and it is pretty much like before. A slightly bigger problem with what they did is the fact that they put the transformer(s) right up against the steel case around it, again not so much because of electrical contact with the laminations, but because a portion of the magnetic field will pass through the case and cause some eddy currents inside it, which would be higher than in the core laminations because the case is thicker and not made of low-conductivity silicon steel. But again it's not a big deal. In total the things they did "wrong" will probably cause 2% or less extra losses. And either way the transformers will probably burn out in less than a minute simply because they are running way over their spec and without significant cooling. Which is true even for many professional spot welders as well because they never run continuously. The core(s) will be saturating and from there efficiency drops off a cliff and the windings heat up especially fast.
@@Basement-Science agreed. If shorting the laminations together was such a big deal, they wouldn’t have welded the I and E sections along the seams at the factory. Although the drilled and tapped screws does cause the generation of eddy currents closer to the secondary winding, with that large a wire, it’s a marginal difference in efficiency. I personally have built a single transformer spot welder in a The King Of Random(rest his soul) inspired manner. That is to say, wooden case. But I added a fan from the same microwave in an attempt to quell the heating problem. I just don’t see any good reason to make the case electrically one with the high voltage device core. Especially if the operating handle is also electrically connected to that same case. I don’t like being an option for the path of least resistance should a short circuit arise.
@@michaelhicks7452 Unfortunately a fan will pretty much only help on long timescales for cooling down, but not if you want to make a lot of welds in quick succession. Thermal conduction is always very low in transformers like this, with or without a fan. Even under oil it wouldn't be meaningfully better. A metal case isnt such a bad idea for a device like this. At least in case a transformer were to fail catastrophically, metal cant catch fire. I'm sure they are aware that they need to *_solidly and reliably_* connect the case to the PE when making things out of metal that involve mains electricity. In that case electrical safety of it is not really a problem anymore.
Amazing work as always, that is a beast of a machine! Think I preferred the background music from your earlier videos, helped me discover some artists I still listen to.
