Spearfishing for Barramundi in Queensland

- A short video I made with Tim McDonald for Spearfishing Downunder Magazine in 2013. The focus here is on spearfishing for barramundi in dirty costal waters. We only take what we need and the fish here were taken from three years worth of diving and all eaten - tasted fantastic!
Excuse the dreadful audio - It was a long time ago.

Holy shit. After watching his new stuff this accent is jarring 😂
For me too, and I'm an Aussie. Must hurt the foreign ear.
Great great vid Dan! Clear Barra dives are to die for. I've been hunting these fish lately and I'm ADDICTED! seeing this massive fish emerge from the merk is the best. Looking forward to encountering some of those big 10+kg models
You blokes are nuts! I live in Cooktown and there are crocs everywhere, you wouldnt last 5 mins
I live in Innisfail and there are crocs everywhere here too! doesn't stop me and my brothers from diving for these beautiful fish.

Yeah you should really go spearfishing in that same spot me thinks. If theres a 5 meter croc around theres gotta be a real nice big barra there too!
Can’t get enough of your videos Dan! Absolutely love what you're doing and so Inspirational, I’ve just started my own Spearfishing/fishing channel based on The Great Barrier Reef.
This has to be at least the 10th time you’ve copy and pasted this message onto one of my videos.
Daniel Mann The awkward truth arrises. Sorry mate, just trying to make a presence as I’m fairly new and looking for ways to grow. Never thought you’d actually see them, best regards!
They look somewhat like the Snook we have here in Florida, US.
Nice fish.
What a video
1-3m vis? Sounds like you are a little treat for a croc especially after you've speared the fish.
I love it. Nice video. 😀👍
I just saw a Tictok where the guy was going to do this and he looked down from the log he was standing on and saw a 14 foot gator in Australia.
No gators in Australia, only crocodiles. I think I saw that one too, was pretty hectic.
Such a good video bloke.!! Awesome..!!
mattyrigpig cheers mate!
Gotta watch em all
Some grave digging going on here 🤣
great great video... please more of those. :)
Very nice video guys! Nice big fish and nice explanation of their hunt!!
Thanks, big fan of your spearguns Benthos 👌
Daniel Mann That's nice Daniel! Have you ever shot with one?!
Never shot with one or seen them in person but from what I’ve seen online they looks amazing.
Well, maybe we can manage that! ;-)
Very nice fish.😀👍
I came here because I saw the tiktok of the guy who was about to go spearing and until he saw a 4.5 meter (~14.8 ft) long crocodile right next to him. Y’all are crazy 😂
exelente video
Looks like bull shark heaven to me 😅
What boat is it your using? Looks a bit like the C-Ski they use in SA. Perfect for spearfishing.
Certainly is a c-ski! That’s my little 440 I have in Australia. Great boat!
great vid !!!
Loving your videos m8 new sub nd admirer here
dude you MUST visit Saudi Arabia, you will have the best spearfishing experience in your life in the Red Sea with visibility up to 40 or even 50 meters. and you can get nice groupers up to (15 kg) or parrot fish (4 or 5 kg) in shallow water about 5 m deep, we have the best marine life here i promise...
I thought it was illegal to spearfish in the Red Sea?
@@DanielMann It is legal in some countries around the red sea, however in Saudi Arabia it is Illegal for no reason at all but we do it weekly anyway xD, most of our spearfishing trips are 24 hours on the boat and we spend between 18 to 20 hours of that time in the water. (if you get caught spearfishing usually they will just tell you it is illegal and get you of the water and worst case scenario they will take your gun, Never happened to me and I've been spearfishing here for about 10 years)
@@DanielMann and i think i need to pay a visit and go spearfishing with you ;)
Bro pneumatic speargun is good for barra
congrats nice video !
Wow I've never even seen a Barramundi.......................yet
Surely you would have gone north for them before with Greg or Browny?
Nah never had the chance. It's always been to easy to drive up to a boat and hit the reef. We have talked about it but that's as far as it went. I'll have to get a tip where to go.
Awesome vid!
Whats up with the boat? 2:06 fully flooded? from getting in and out?
Wet deck boat.
Love this Vid from a couple of years back what length rubbers would you use on an 85cm roller? Cheers Mitch
Not sure what the length was to be honest. Haven’t owned that gun in 5 years. It was 80cm from the roller axle to the loading notch.
@@DanielMann thanks heaps for the reply I really appreciate it. Do you have a formular that i can use for my roller gun with 16mm bands?
@@mitchelloneill6050 I generally measure the overall length from the tab on the spear, up to the muzzle and back down to where your rubber attaches on the gun. Imagine that is the barrel length of a standard gun and then make it the length for that...if that makes sense. Kind of like a regular gun just folded in half.
you know that you are killing the breading females, well done
Not all of the fish speared here are females. Yes some of them are and taking a handful each season is nothing on what one night of commercial gill netting does to a population. I could easily take my 5 fish bag limit all of large fish but I choose not to. No one bats an eyelid when a 10kg red emperor comes over the side of the boat. A fish that is far older and slower growing than a 10kg barramundi. Just emotional reasoning not logic.
Fantastic video guys. Good tips, just forgot to cover what habitat you can find them with success. Shallow and??? Apart from the obvious reptile infested rivers. I assume this is southern QLD.
Slow Diver they can be found on headlands as well as creeks. Very interesting fish that can turn up in unusual areas. This was filmed in central Queensland.
Daniel Mann could you talk more about what sort of headland structure you would expect to hold these fish? Or is it really coming down to all rocky headlands from Gladstone north? So just a lucky dip🙏🏻 thank you mate
Can’t believe how similar these things look to Nile perch
Closely related species
@@DanielMann ok that makes sense lol I’ve caught Nile perch before in Africa they get MASSSIVE straight up river kings
Did you manage to come down to Devon for a dive this summer Dan? great video mate post some more content soon
Matt Smith I got to Falmouth, Swanage, Ringstead, Durdle door and Portland. Got some more UK content coming up shortly.
Ok, so a fair bit of ground covered then! did you get to the nationals?
Yes I did Matt, Swanage, Ringstead & Portscatho. Missed the one on the weekend unfortunately. Placed 8th in the first two comps and 3rd in the last. Overall for the year I came 8th. I filmed a vlog for the 3rd nationals so stay tuned for that edit coming up soon!
So what are the regs on spearfising Barramundi, I thought it was a highly regulated fishery
Same as line fishing.
Do you have to worry about crocs in the waters you are spearing these in?
craybro probably but unfortunately that's all part of it.
Nice vid but I know how to handle sharks but how do you handle crocs spearfishing
A mate saw one on one of these trips, just the tail. I guess you use some common sense and have a good boaty.
Most important info is how to not die from a croc and still find bara
nice weight vest idol
Do people call you Mermann?
It’s happened before.
You hold your breath for ages, I've just started spearfishing and I can probably hold my breath for a minute max. I'm pretty out of shape though so it's something I'm working on.
2:05 what is that you are sinking with no waves?
Self draining wet deck.
wanted to get into spearfishing any gear you could recommend
EsclusievKiller what part of the world are you diving in?
so tasty
How do you go with sharks and crocs with vis like that?
Only ever had one croc sighting underwater, a little fella. Never seen any sharks but I’m sure they have seen us!
2:06 the boat is full of water??? is it unsinkable??
Self draining deck, it's a c-ski 440, great little dive boats.
Is the C-ski like the easiest boat to get in and out of?
How does the 440 go over open ocean with swell and chop and 3 or 4 guys?
Great video too Mr.Mann...as always.
Why is that boat sinking
It’s not sinking, it’s just got a self draining deck that can get water on it.
What fish is that? Is like snook!
Barramundi.
just a stupid Question maybe dont you have trouble with Salty Crocks and witte sharks ???
We've run into one croc but only a small one. Sharks are everywhere, no fences in the ocean :)
Daniel Mann that is truth no fences in the ocean ty and respect
i am gona sucribe see more of hunthing those big fish
Is there no sharks or crocodiles in there??
No, they are there somewhere.
@@DanielMann your wild love the vids!!
Whys there so much water in ur boat ma Mann
It’s a wet, self draining deck.
How do you judge a legal size fish? The large fish are breeding females
Jason Clark Not all big fish are females. It depends on where the fish are from as they change sex to what is needed in a local population. In this video you can see Tim shooting a 116cm male fish. I've shot plenty of bigger ones that are males. All fish breed and as you can see in the video we leave them alone after we have taken a good fish and just film. Legally we could have all taken 5 fish each, 20 for the boat! But we took one nice fish each and moved on. This video was compiled over two years and many many trips.
Judging size is always difficult and comes down to experience. Smaller fish are easy to tell if they are under 58cm and if in doubt on a larger fish don't shoot it.
Daniel Mann Not all big fish are females, but most generally are unless they are a new arrival to the saltwater from a freshwater impoundment or river system and are attempting their first spawn as a male. After they have spawned at least once as a male these big fish in saltwater will develop ova and be able to produce 3 million eggs each in the next season spawn.
Where's there Barra... There's Croc's..
Indeed’
bul look like Dexter
Sell us your marks mate 😂
Ey whats about bull shark? its scary...
More worried about the crocodiles personally!
Daniel Mann but they are upper at the far noth.. Right?
They have been recorded as far south as the Logan river. Common in Central Queensland where a lot of this was filmed.
Spear fishing ain't a sport lol, it's a way too put a feed on your table. Maybe you need too watch some YBS on being some what more sustainable.
Spearfishing is a “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Spearfishing checks most of these boxes in the case of competitions. You may perceive the practise of spearfishing as solely a way of surviving, however, others derive enjoyment or “entertainment” from the challenge or accomplishment of spearing a fish for sport or for food.
Mate I just don't agree with taking more then I genuinely need.
This was all filmed over several years by several different divers. More than 100 days diving went into making this video.
