  • Continuing the Best Motorcycle Accessories series as I slowly kit out Heidi (the new BMW R 1250 GS Rallye), in this vid I'll be fitting the Avant Fender Extender and the Mudsling (both by MachineArt moto).
I bought both these as a combo deal from Nippy Normans for £196, check out the website ay NippyNormans.com

Had both the Mudsling and Fender Extender on mine for over 5 years. They've done exactly what they say on the tin, along with a R&G 'shock sock' on my front spring they've protected it from all sorts of crud. Brilliant bit's of kit, yes pricey but well worth it.

I have the genuine mudsling on my 1250 GS, which I took off my 1200 and it does a decent job of protecting the rear shock. When I got my 1250 I bought a copy of the front fender extender off ebay for less than £9 as opposed for over £50 for the genuine one. It was a similar picture with the hand guard extenders from another well know manufactuer. Personally I'm dissapointed certain accessory manufacturers keep charging silly money for what are bits of plastic, I know there'sdesign and production set up costs but come on chaps stop ripping us off. Before I'm flamed too much I did buy the X head cylinder protectors which are very good. My point is the GS is the best selling large bike on the planet so it's time they priced their products realistically IMO. I agree they are needed though Bruce and maybe BMW should be doing more too to protect their bikes straight off the production line.

I don't know why I enjoyed this video so much, I did this very install on my neighbours new-to-him '16 GS last week... And now I keep catching myself looking at GS's on ebay... We went for a ride and at no point did my Z1000sx outgun the GS on these slippery December roads, quite the opposite, he was very comfortable and composed on the GS while I was getting pinged off the seat by potholes.

Absolutely the best parts to fit to your new GS Bruce as they stop any mud and dirt getting into difficult places to clean later, as well as the paint protection which you have already completed the only remaining after market accessory which I would suggest thing left to fit would be the Wunderlich engine bar protectors which clip on to the engine bars.

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  4 года назад +2

Aye but if a manufacturer fitted everything we wanted for our bikes as standard, there’d be no accessory industry would there, plus the price of the bikes would be even more expensive.
Same with exhausts, most manufacturers just get the bike to meet emission standards and don’t worry about the look of the exhausts as they know a large percentage of us will change it anyway 🤷‍♂️👍

My biggest bugbear with modern bikes is inadequate mudguards just paying lip service to their function... I hear the "well it would make the bikes dearer if they were larger" argument all the time and it gives the aftermarket a purpose. If the manufacturer fitted full size capable mudguards as standard then the aftermarket could supply crappy cut down vajjazzled jobs! Being flippant about the instructions but they're right on hand just a second later :)
Both mods are very handy for keeping the bike a lot easier to keep clean.
Fine as a series, missing some riding content on the new bike though

just getting a new GS so searched for fender extenders and huggers, as you say put BMW in front of it and it gives a licence to print money, as if the bikes not expensive enough !!found identical looking items to what you've fitted for under £50 the pair!!! I know they might not be of such good quality but they only keep the muck off!

Thank you for posting. Great video. I have the front guard and it is a great addition. Will consider the rear mud guard. If you are looking for mods for your GS, you should consider an adjustable folding shift lever. Several companies sell them. Not sure if it is allowed to mention company names here, so I will refrain. I did not think I needed one, until I installed one. It makes an incredible difference on the ease of shifting (I have long/big feet). Specially, if you use boots while riding. Just my $0.02 worth, ymmv.

      Cheers Simon,
I’ve never felt the need for the adjustable shift lever tbh, except when standing up (as all good GS riders do on the way to Starbucks 😉😂) 👍

Fender Extenders and Rad Guards are the first accessory i fit to a new bike. I do wonder why manufacturers leave the mudguards so short. I like this series, itll be handy when i manage to convince the Misses that a GS is a good idea.

Hi Bruce I’ve had both of these fitted to my bike for a long while.
My only gripe I find is with the mud slinger and with this fitted the engine heat cannot disperse I can feel the engine heat even when riding on open roads.

Fender extender is crucial but the mudsling I fitted and took off. I only fitted because of the hype. Yes, it kept the middle of the bike clean and free of road grime, but not the rider! I then fitted a Puig hugger (for GS) and it’s absolutely brilliant - no wet legs and backside when riding through torrential downpours. It may get clogged with mud if going properly off road, but I won’t be doing that, other than the odd unmade trail, so it’s perfect for my needs. The other item I wouldn’t be without, as it keeps the rear of the bike from being sprayed with water, is the rear crud catcher. Without it, at certain speeds (when wet), water is flung up the rear of the bike and actually reaches the rider’s back - must be a balance of forward speed and slipstream effect. The rear crud catcher eliminates this. I have had these three items fitted to each of my three successive GSAs.

Makes you wonder why BMW didn’t just fit a longer fender & hugger as standard?! After all, you pay enough for a GS after all...

I agree these are useful, but may I just say the price of these is crazy, £200 for two pieces of black plastic, for me it’s beyond ridiculous bordering ripoff.

Love the series and I have the same (cheaper Chinese!!) versions on my GSA; defo essential for the high mileage users as the road crud is horrid. BTW bought the headlight grill on your recommendation from #lonerider and what a bloody fiddle but loving the end result 100%
