What a beautifully acted scene. Martin Sheen is incredible, but so is the woman playing the Dr. It's not easy to play such a dislikable character - you have to suppress the very human urge of wanting to be liked and convey that through the character. She stays true and reaction at the end of the scene is very well done.

Excuse me. I AM a christian and I HAVE read the bible, as translated from latin texts as well as The new king James version. These quotes are correct. I don't have room for a huge example, but lets talk football:
-"Leviticus 11:7-8 And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you."

Just because a book of words says to do something does not mean it gives you the excuse or just cause to do it. I have read those passages and as I have said before elsewhere, it is a book of past events that should not be repeated and should be used as a lesson showing where we have been and should not go again.

Well that is certainly true, and there are some black people such as Ward Connolley who disagree that affirmative action is necessary. But it is undeniable that today's western society is better than biblical times, people are no longer stoned to death, in most countries capital punishment doesn't exist.
While some would argue that passing laws to guarantee women rights is redundant because they'll be mortified to learn there was any doubt, it is still necessary for laws that can be enforced.

The West Wing is an American television serial drama created by Aaron Sorkin that was originally broadcast on NBC from September 22, 1999, to May 14, 2006. The series is set in the West Wing of the White House, where the Oval Office and offices of presidential senior staff are located, during the fictional Democratic administration of Josiah Bartlet (played by Martin Sheen).

It is a book that offers the reader a chance to differentiate between right and wrong in which both can be found within the pages. You the reader are responsible for how you use and interpret the information and put it to work in current times. You can't just throw a one liner out there to discredit the bible. You must take the entire context of the passages surrounding the verse and then use your own mind to draw conclusions on its relevance in current affairs.

Democracy is seen by most as the "best" form of government, and I personally agree, but objectively speaking it has lots of problems that monarchies don't. Not the least of which is having to get hundreds of people to agree with something instead of just letting a single person decide everything, which is easier and more efficient.

Yup, that is a purely rational explanation. Although when I had my NDE experience I saw nothing. I do wonder if they play out according to what you believe. As an atheist I believe I just become part of the cosmos again so maybe I saw nothing because of that. I did actually technically die twice and neither time did I have any "visions" but I count them as one because it happened in the same accident.

...with. If you're humble, it means accepting that you can be wrong in your moral interpretations. If you're also a loving person, then you should be willing to allow people the freedom to make the mistakes they believe are correct, and, as long as an actor sort of agrees with how the script represents morality, it seems morally acceptable to work on that production. After all, a range of reasonable views leads to discussion, which can lead to improvement on what we have.

  • @AsylumET
    @AsylumET 11 лет назад

Not sure what point you're trying to make. I do agree that everything he said was in fact 100% correct. He offered only one liners pulled from chapters in different books of the bible that when read in their entirety, show the reasoning of the times in which they were written and enforced. None of it offers and rhyme or reason to behave in such a way now.

The ones we got rid of are the ones that we don't want to follow; what we can and can't touch or eat, religiously sanctioned murder and slavery and prostitution. However, we are happy glad to continue the discrimination of others through the Old Testament laws. Within the same chapter as the Homosexuality quote it also condemns body augmentation, mainly tattoos. I don't hear too many people yelling about those anymore.

The bible has also have thousands upon thousands of translations...How the sentence starts and how it ends, after numerous translations, is two different things. I hate to say this--because it's going to unintentionally earn me some enemies--but that's actually a subjective measure as well. There are some--including women--who believe that many actions taken in the name of making women "equal" have undermined their attempts to be seen that way and even demeaned them. (See clips with Ainsley in them)
EXAMPLE: The minimum wage went up when women entered the labor force which pushed up prices. Not bad that they can get jobs, but it comes with downsides.

Quite the contrary, it serves this purpose overly well if you take it as a book of example showing both our virtues and our transgressions and stop using it as a tool to oppress and judge others which it explicitly forbids though I know many Christians choose to cherry pick and use it to point the finger at everyone but themselves.

@jdwhi387 I have no problem with someone calling homosexuality abnormal, simply because unlike most people I have no issue with the exact meaning of the word abnormal which simply means that it doesnt comform to the norm, cause the norm is simply what the majority does. The word abnormal for some reason is considered bad, while the word itself implies no such thing, nor the opposite. Frankly I am quite happy being abnormal, it makes me... well... more unique :)

Reading your comment about how it's "obvious" from reading the Bible that "it was written by God" left me speechless. I mean, I feel like we're supposed to tiptoe around people's religion b/c it's seen as off limits for criticism, and that is very frustrating. I'll merely say this.. it's quite disturbing how this type of thinking would be considered a severe psychiatric illness (brainwashed, delusional and irrational thinking) were it not masquerading as "faith."

Actually, It's a pretty easy thing to do. Most movie actors find it easy to follow the script when instead of being the question and answer session, or interview, as it is portrayed to be, it is nothing more than the blathering of a screen writer's imagination. The respondent is given no time to respond, and the outcome is what the writer wished it to be. That is the normal outcome of fantasy land. In a world where people are permitted to respond and allowed to think this scenario is stupid

But it's important to remember that subjectivity is opinion, not fact. So long as we have our opinions, there will be those who have the OPPOSITE opinions, and keeping an open mind means we can't just dismiss them as based on "mental retardation" or ignorance. That demonstrates bias and CLOSED-mindedness, which is not healthy or fair.
