I love my SSL Six! At first, I was really apprehensive about the 2-band EQ and 1-Knob compressor it really seemed inadequate for the price I paid! But after learning how to use the device properly (and understand the philosophy of the product actual intention), this mixer is really the bomb! I am still discovering new possibilities with this mixer!
Im using a Warm Audio G Comp with my Mackie 32.8 bus and Acustica Audio for Mastering and Mixing with Nebula...getting stellar mixes and masters over here!!! Its all about having a Great Leveled, Tracked and Stylish Mix before you Master And at that point Any Mid to High End Analog Gear with some Acustica Polish..... San4 Ultra (SSL G Console Live Sampled) my favorite right now) will pretty much do the trick..... I honestly think they shot themselves in the Foot with that EQing...Im going to be Saving up for a Neve Summing Mixe, Stereo GML EQ and a Better Maker Limiter to got with my WA G Comp......thats the Higest (Affordable) Quality your going to get out analog Mastering
Its got that sound.....I can see that as a final Mastering tool...I may be getting that soon for final mastering till I can have the other set up I really want....just for "Final Mastering"
I really love my sslsix extremely versatile. The pres are great but what I like most is the bus compressor and even simply running signal through the unit to tame the digital sound of some of my drum machines and even to soften sibilant sounds of vocals.
Do you think this is designed sort of as a small touring mixer for band shows so that each line has its own settings??? Sounding nice, imo very vocal preferred in the mix. I would balance the backing a bit more may side chain the vocal into the instrumental just personal taste. Feels like vocal showcase rather than a balanced mix between vocal and backing. The sound is very nice quality the mix feels unbalanced.. very cool gear.
With just two mic preamps you're not going to do a lot in a live performance. I think it's designed to be a sort of audio interface with extended capabilities.
I actually sold mine a while back when I had not used it a in a little while. I found that I used many more plugins when I do not have the ssl6. I re purchased it and really love using the pre amps for loads of pleasant gain as well as versatility without a computer when I want to use it as a mixer and pre for multiple instruments and vocals.
my biggest takeaway: what took 10 minutes to get something barely useable on the six took about 90 seconds to get a really gorgeous sounding mix bus going on the warm. glad to see this shoot out, honestly. very telling!
You have that Midas which is really nice for tracking in my opinion…You have some outboard gear, so you could add a nice analog EQ, or go with a few plugins..Other than that, you are good…The SSL six is very clean.. I use it to bring in other signals when I am recording DSD…I don’t use the EQ or the compression…
I wish they would have at least put a sweepable mid on the both channels and ratio control on the comp....and a saturation add...those three things would have made such a diffrerence
I used to own a TK Audio BC1-S, which I really liked. A few years later, I tried the Warm Bus-Comp and thought it sounded terrible. Since then, I lost interest in hardware compressors. It seems the ones that people rave about online are just the ones that don't completely suck.
Last year I bought 2 ssl six to replace my soundcraft gb,but be honest new generation of ssl or any new Analoges consoles are crap….. I see your mix with Midas Venice,that was wounderful
That's not an SSL bus comp, it's a channel comp, not at all meant for compressing the 2 bus or mastering...that's fine but then you compare to actual mastering comps. Hmm ok. That's like comparing a delay to a reverb. It's really not the same thing.
I never really cared for the SSL pres..They are known for their EQs, Dynamics, Routing and Automation/Recall. The SSL Six Pres a a big improvement from their pres in previous consoles.. my friend has 8 of the 500 series channel strips he uses for drums and they sound pretty good.
@@QbanThunder i really liked the sound of my ssl six pres the best compared to my focusrite isa two and 430, as well as my mindprint en voice tube pre and lastly any of the apollo unisons. it all depends on the situation and ones taste but i really did like the ssl color and found the clarity to be great

One thing to try is boost the fader say 5db and find the sweet spot. It's like adding subtle eq and compressoin. It's all in the fader...❤

I have the unit. If you compare the pre-amps to Rupert Neve - they suck. The compressor is ok
