The biggest question I have is why the trench wasn't pumped out. There was a hell of a lot of water and it could have been diverted at best. Keep in mind that I'm not criticizing the video or work. Yea. I operated most of them from Cranes to Jackhammers over near 50 yrs. Cleveland Bucketwheels on the CJB. Murphy, and Yank lines. Mainly the Allens on UK lines. The Clevelands you had to steer to the centre line ALL the time. They walked around. The Allens were a long boom with bucket chain on Not a wheel/ You could walk away. Have smoko. Come back, It;s still chuffing along the centreline. My fav were the Draglines in the soft/muddy stuff. Loved 'em.
Perhaps a stupid question, but is the spoil pile always re used as the back fill? Even if it's high in clay content, which tends to backfill very poorly?
dbennett4 most of the time it is. Because most of the time it is virgin soil your digging through. If the soil is out of spec then they will haul in an approved fill or amend the spoil in to an approved fill. In 2 years it will look like the tress were cleared but no evidence of the digging. I really is a very professional process and the workers really work to make sure everything is done correctly. Plus there are inspectors. I worked in the underground utilities for 12 years. Water mains, sewer lines, underground power lines and telephone lines. I enjoyed all 12 years it is. Good job.
dbennett4 - "proper" backfill would be cost prohibitive. its built into the pipe for pipelines like this. they could backfill with boulders and it probably wouldn't do shit to the pipe, someone should be able to tell u how thick that steel is. an inch?
How do you avoid damaging the epoxy coating without using screened backfill? Damage the epoxy, it will create a rust hole and a weak spot in the line and the pipe wont live up to its life expectancy. I hope that wasnt an oil line.
When you work for multiple companies with different machines...when they don't need you, lay off, find another company on another line....the downside of pipe lining.....work not steady, but pay good...draw unemployment...
They are excavators set up in a backhoe configuration...? I don't know if anyone explained to you that there are backhoe excavators AND shovel excavators. You are probably mistaking the word backhoe to mean what is known as a backhoe LOADER.

But 60 years from now, that pipeline might develop a leak and cause a massive spill of several thousand litres of oil, so better to move oil by overground trains instead!

walked the ditch throwing rocks behind a Cleveland....among other jobs....labor..breaking out, but female pulled me out of my favorite job....
At 1:43, was that a carrot that was dug out of the ground? And those are not backhoes, they are excavators.
