2024 Elections | 'SA needs a reset, via postponement of next year's polls, to fix itself': Lehohla

  • Опубликовано: 19 дек 2023
  • Former Statistician-General Dr Pali Lehohla says South Africa should consider a postponement of the much-anticipated 2024 general and presidential elections.
Instead, the country should hold wide-ranging talks involving all stakeholders, including communities, civic groups, politicians, businesses and religious organisations, to determine the kind of a country they want to build.
Talking to the Daily Maverick, Lehohla said SA is not in a condition to move on and continue under the current circumstances.
His view is that the nation needs to pause, reset, and have frank conversations.
Dr Lehohla, Director at the Economic Modelling Academy, joins us virtually, as does Political Commentator Ebrahim Fakir, to discuss this.

We already have a non functioning democracy in our country, which has not been working for a very long period. People like to sacrifice where sacrifice is not necessarily needed. The country's government is dead already. How is the postponement of the elections going to solve with the democracy of the country? The result for the postponement will just lead to a disaster. People like to see the elections take place on the proposed date in May. The party which wins the elections will handle the problem which is being identified, but definitely not the ANC party, as it had failed to deal with that problem, but concentrating on stealing. Let the elections go on as planned. The brave and the brainy winning party will take care of that, as they have long being prepared to deal with most, if not all, of the problems. Postponing elections is like saying to D.A (i will vote for you but you must be also black people centric), EFF (please hate the illegals & you have my vote), ANC (stop corruption hence i will vote for you) all this is no rocket science but all of these leopards are not willing to change their spots. Bottom line we must vote period we can't afford to have Haiti/Mexico/Sudan/Congo/Nigeria situations

Mr Lehohla, I am sorry to say you sound like a coward. The hole problems you are talking about, the ruling party should have dealt with it. Exactly what you are talking about, it is not a national disaster which needs an emergency attention. The winning political party will deal with that. Period.

    That would be unconstitutional.
We are a constitutional democracy and that prescribes how we behave.
So we need to get the right people in and reconfigure the constitutional order. That is would be attained by majority 2 thirds majority in the National Assemby after all constitutional processes had unfolded and his view of society's composition. Civil society engaging. Without that it would be illegal and unlawful.
I wonder how a man of his stature n calibre has missed that and simplistically jump into pausing and postpone the elections. It is by far illegal to do and would have led to a nightmare of unintended consiquences. After all all constitutional problems would have been solved easily without following the prescripts of the law.

We don't care what Mandela's yard looks like, we don't care about 'horse' parables, we don't need retirees to make decisions on an election postponement & we don't need time to reflect.
We want to affect change, we can even vote in January before work & school resumes.

First of all … congratulations on a rare occasion that mainstream media is encouraging the kind of conversations and thinking that will progress our society (which is in fact mainstream medias ethical obligation).
To continue the conversation… dr lehotla is correct in arguing that the system is deeply dysfunctional and requires rapid and radical change.
The question to be answered is what is to be done to transform the current broken politico-economic system to one that functions on behalf of all of society. While Ebrahim is correct in that there are other institutions, forums etc tasked with answering political questions these are in fact innumerous questions, not transparent etc. hence the real issue are obfuscated and not discussed at all.
How do we change the political system to one that functions on behalf of society is the single very specific question that now needs intense and varied debate leading to a plan of action. This exchanging of ideas must happen in a totally transparent way informing public and allowing the public to participate and affect the outcome ala referendum and/or peoples assemblies and so on…
