As s semi truck driver who has driven 18, 13 & 10 speeds. Just think of 1st gear as what we call a creeper gear. It’s just there to get you moving if you’re heavy loaded. Empty we usually start off in 2 or 3. In terms of a manual jeep the 1st gear is ideal for off-roading or if towing and need to get moving. I wouldn’t recommend starting off in 2nd though… unless you’re facing downhill and roll a bit to get speed up 1st. You’ll burn the clutch if towing and try to start off in 2nd especially on flat or uphill.

I will never buy a mopar manual transmission again. I have 40 years experience driving manual transmissions, and the mopar transmission is the first that failed that quickly.....
The push start could be held down at first to automatically start the car right away instead of pressing it the first time then hold it. The 1st gear in any regular car especially bigger vehicles like trucks, off-road SUVs, jeep gladiators etc are meant to start the initial movement of the vehicle, they are not meant to linger on or drive in higher rpm’s unless creeping through traffic. Look at manual 18 wheelers and watch how quickly that 1st to 2nd gear shift takes. This isn’t a race car.
Jeeps manual transmission is actually very weak can not beet the eight speed automatic. I am a manual guy but Jeep has to upgrade their manual transmission it’s got to be tougher
In philippines my grandfather have a military truck m35a2 i really really love manual transmission i love playing gas pedal before shifting low gear as a engine break.. what a music in my ears because of turbo diesel 😅😅
After driving and owning the 6Speed 2020 JLU for a year vs my 06 Jeep TJ, Mazda(Ford) B4000 a 4 Banger Toyota Taco and V6 Taco all manuals this clutch sucks. Dose not match up with the Penstar V6, seems to keep the engine under powered and the Pressure plate recall FCA created and refuses to replace transmissions has now passed the design failure onto Stellantis and they are attempting another bandaid on the mechanical failure that could result in catastrophic failure and or Jeep catching fire.
Do you think rehearing would help? I see some refer to less stalling and improved driving after going to 4.56, 4.88 or shorter. Aftermarket clutch seems pretty popular too.
Idk if its just me or what, but this jeep is the hardest manual car ive ever driven. The one ive been driving is my moms and shes had it for like a month and i iust cant figure it out. Its only the start the i cajt do but like i know its not me because ive driven other manuals and not had this issue like what am i doing wrong
I have always driven manual but I will say I have changed my mind as far as any serious offroading goes; the newer automatics with crawling mode are so much better in the really rough stuff. Yet I still prefer the manual in my daily driver Rubicon. I did switch out the shifter for the B&M kit from Holley. Shorter throw and more solid feedback because, IMO, the stock manual was too soft and the throw was too long. The JL already has a clutch that is way too soft IMO so the shift kit takes the edge off that a little.
Why is it interesting that it has cruise control 🤔 my 2000 Honda CR-V manual transmission has cruise control. Just get the the speed you wanna go on the proper gear and hit the speed lock .... I use it all the time on road trips
Yeah the steps are basically useless on these, not exactly sure why, but it's easier to not use them than it use to try and use them. If you do step up on them, you end up standing there for a moment thinking "how the hell am I going to get in now..."
A manual transmission is better than a automatic transmission. Manual transmission are cheaper to fix than an automatic . It cheaper to change out a new clutch assembly than rebuilding a automobile transmission. I been an auto and diesel mechanic for 50 years and many other skill. Mechanical Engineer of all types of engines and machines equipment.
dude its a jeep.. in my perspective a jeep should never feel smooth or too fancy to drive.. it should feel jeepy and its so satisfying when you hear the mechanical sounds. love the manual transmission. they should make the gear stick even more bigger and little thinner on diameter so it feels more like the classic jeep.
I am the same way Vega. Finally a video made in 2021 showing the jepp manual. I go to pick up my Saraha in May and i am so excited. And now even more pumped up to get it.
No Dave would say never buy a new car and crap like that. I was meaning i am still young enough i can get a new car now. And i take good care of my cars it will last awhile. I had a 96 caprice i bought new that lasted until 2017. I have a 2007 trailblazer i bought new that i still have. So i am going i have the same luck with the jeep.
Means when you hit the gas before a downshift to match the engine rpm to the road speed in the next lower gear. Some cars have really lazy throttle response and is annoying to match revs if you need a quick downshift like in traffic. Ideally you would be in gear, push the clutch, put it in neutral, let the clutch up, blip the throttle to match the rpm to road speed then hit the clutch again and put it in the gear you desire. That puts the least wear on the synchros.
I had another FCA vehicle with a manual, a 2013 Dodge Dart, where the transmission was built in Italy since it was a rebadged Fiat. It also had a long throw shifter, so curious if this is the same product.
Been driving a manual for 30 years.. this is the worst manual transmission I’ve ever driven.. and i drove a car without synchromesh.. if you want a JL buy the automatic or get the bronco Edit: should add the transmission itself is a rebranded Aisin and is a little notchy, but reliable. The issue is the clutch pedal assembly and the drive by wire.. the pedal assembly is plastic and over time groans and binds, the drive by wire has days of delay, not good for a manual. Also the on/off is on the clutch.. it’s annoying as all hell..
I bought a 2019 Jeep Wrangler with the six speed manual transmission. After the second recall for the clutch I traded it in. I love manual transmissions but in today's market they are an afterthought and the only reason Jeep continues to manufacture them is to advertise a low entry level sticker price. From the beginning the transmission seemed like it was not a good fit for the engine, with extremely long gearing. But the worst aspect was the clutch was defective had to be replaced and then a second recall was issued related to the first. That's what happens when you have a bunch of marketing people ignoring what the engineers tell them to save money. Good work Chrysler.
How does adaptive cruise work with the manual? Does it still brake despite being in gear? Or does it pull the clutch? Or does it just kinda expect you to downshift/pull the clutch yourself?
I have a manual Civic Hatchback with adaptive cruise control. It will brake like normal, but if your speed drops below 30mph the cruise control will disengage.
@@maestrojo That seems counter intuitive, if the car in front of you stops, you're gonna hit them unless you brake yourself, which defeats the purpose of letting it brake for you. I guess the car can't be expected to get all the way to a stop or accelerate without clutch-by-wire though... I suppose it's better than nothing though.
Guy has no idea what he's talking about synchros. Most transmissions use the same synchros for all gears. The synchro speeds up or slows down the gear you're shifting into using friction. Rev matching reduces the work the synchro needs to do. Once it's in gear the synchro is not in use. So taking off in second gear is not a problem. It will put extra wear on the clutch if the gearing is not low enough.
I personally hate this transmission, it feels horrible to me, but maybe that's just me. I dunno. Clutch doesn't have enough precision, and I have never shifted into the wrong gear until I drove one of these. Hated it.
Manual transmissions are not meant for todays 'touch pad' adventurers.. I drove an old 8 spd water truck for years with a 14" throw hard as hell clutch and double clutching for every gear.. I get such a laugh at todays brave warriors..
@@rickqueen2751 That's fair enough, this is my first Jeep/Chrysler, more familiar with GM and Ford gearboxes. The Gladiator looks like a blast so I'm willing to jump out of my comfort zone with a Jeep/Chrysler/Stellantis/whatever.
Yes they did twice. But the guy made this video isn't going to say that because he wants advertising money from Chrysler and wants to also kiss the butt of the dealership he's using. These videos are so useless because they're so biased in a favorable way towards the dealership and the product they sell.

Look at manual 18 wheelers and watch how quickly that 1st to 2nd gear shift takes. This isn’t a race car.
Anything with a manual is good even a 1st gen Dodge Viper
You do not have to hold the brake down to start only the clutch
Jeeps manual transmission is actually very weak can not beet the eight speed automatic. I am a manual guy but Jeep has to upgrade their manual transmission it’s got to be tougher
In philippines my grandfather have a military truck m35a2 i really really love manual transmission i love playing gas pedal before shifting low gear as a engine break.. what a music in my ears because of turbo diesel 😅😅
Holding the button to start must be a stick shift thing. My Gladiator has an automatic, I press and release the button and it starts every time
I bet it's the manual as a brief reminder that you are starting it and should be in neutral.
Yes, I had an auto Gladiator before and a manual now. In auto, you just touch the start button. In manual, you have to hold it till it starts.
It needs the eco diesel standard
No kidding. That would be elite
Manual all the way!
Just got my first Jeep and it’s manual !
can you do a jeep gladiator manual transmission 4 WD offroad review of 4HI and 4LO WITHA 6 SPEED?
Why is it interesting that it has cruise control 🤔 my 2000 Honda CR-V manual transmission has cruise control. Just get the the speed you wanna go on the proper gear and hit the speed lock .... I use it all the time on road trips
So, you’re saying get the manual if you want a manual and get the auto if you want an auto? Got it. Thx.
i'm saving up to buy the 2023 or 24 jeep wrangler high Altitude with the 3.6 v6 manual transmission with the one touch skye roof that i love.
Beautiful jeep I like the flag on the back on the back of the jeep
OMG to those mountains! Is that Wyoming? So beautiful...
Yeah the steps are basically useless on these, not exactly sure why, but it's easier to not use them than it use to try and use them. If you do step up on them, you end up standing there for a moment thinking "how the hell am I going to get in now..."
I got a manual transmission keep n I love it!!!! Ppl can’t drive them so they like to talk smack about them
A manual transmission is better than a automatic transmission.
You don’t know this, but you answer all my questions. Man I want one, talk me out of retirement.
I am the same way Vega. Finally a video made in 2021 showing the jepp manual. I go to pick up my Saraha in May and i am so excited. And now even more pumped up to get it.
@@dannycnoble it’s like I can make they payments, but I also want to retire 😂😂
I am still 15 -20 yrs from retirement. My girlfriend just paid off her car so now we can get me a new one.
@@dannycnoble Dave Ramsey has entered the chat
No Dave would say never buy a new car and crap like that. I was meaning i am still young enough i can get a new car now. And i take good care of my cars it will last awhile. I had a 96 caprice i bought new that lasted until 2017. I have a 2007 trailblazer i bought new that i still have. So i am going i have the same luck with the jeep.
The manual transmission on the gladiator is pretty cool
Nice video but please define what "blipability" means??? thanks
I had a 2019 wrangler manual 2 door and I regret selling it. Just ordered a 23 gladiator rubicon manual.
Yes! I love mine.
My manual gladiator was terrible. Had it for 6 months and traded it off. Mine was a base model.
Are you sure the manual is available with adaptive cruise 🤔 because the Jeep configurator says otherwise !
Then again I could be wrong 😯
The only way to make a gladiator acceptable to buy is with a manual, cause all the other truck guys cant say they “own the only manual American truck”
I don’t know man, I have been hearing about the manuals catching on fire for years on these things
Great reviews 👍 like always.
Good topic, Ben. Interesting traded at 6k miles.
In Low Range, very rarely will it stall-out.
I had another FCA vehicle with a manual, a 2013 Dodge Dart, where the transmission was built in Italy since it was a rebadged Fiat. It also had a long throw shifter, so curious if this is the same product.
🧐🧐🧐
Uhhhhhhh very unlikely to be the same trans, considering the dart was fwd lol. All the jeep wranglers tend to have a long throw.
It is made in Japan by aisin
Been driving a manual for 30 years.. this is the worst manual transmission I’ve ever driven.. and i drove a car without synchromesh.. if you want a JL buy the automatic or get the bronco
Edit: should add the transmission itself is a rebranded Aisin and is a little notchy, but reliable. The issue is the clutch pedal assembly and the drive by wire.. the pedal assembly is plastic and over time groans and binds, the drive by wire has days of delay, not good for a manual. Also the on/off is on the clutch.. it’s annoying as all hell..
Great video Ben I think I’ll go with in automatic but I also like the manuals
It will put extra wear on the clutch if the gearing is not low enough.
good video ben
manual transmission ❤️❤️❤️
Towing? Fuel economy
I personally hate this transmission, it feels horrible to me, but maybe that's just me. I dunno. Clutch doesn't have enough precision, and I have never shifted into the wrong gear until I drove one of these. Hated it.
I think you should test drive station wagons and mini vans for a living. LMAO
He says automatic is better yet no one knows how to drive stick shift so if you don’t want it stolen go for a manual
Of course it is. It's a jeep.
Needs a heavier flywheel, more fuel added at low rpm, more robust pressure plate assembly ,lower axle gear ratios,
I like the Gladiator, but wish there was an option for a shorter bed.
There is. It's called a Wrangler. 😂
I have not driven a manual in over 20 years. What is blip ability?
I drive a manual daily and I have no idea what blip ability is either 🧐
It's easy to blip when downshifting in my opinion. The throttle is pretty responsive
What is blip'able
Automatic Jeeps are blasphemous!
It’s a jeep. It should be manual 😜
Manual transmissions are not meant for todays 'touch pad' adventurers..
I drove an old 8 spd water truck for years with a 14" throw hard as hell clutch and
double clutching for every gear.. I get such a laugh at todays brave warriors..
Bro how is every one driving 20mph bruh I drive when it’s a traffic road 60mph my guys how
I live my manual Gladiator OlllllllO #JTRSPARTACUS
Trany is fine, the Pentastar..not so much.
man first 2 minutes in... i'm only watching just to watch. manuals have cruise controls too and way he chirped to second gear hahahha
The new Bronco with the manual looks great.
Men drive with 3 pedals
I do everyday I live in nyc... what’s your next excuse?
@@rickqueen2751 that’s cool, I don’t like automatic, to each their own
@@rickqueen2751 I have. Still want one. Plus it's less of an issue anyways with a lighter clutch feel and low 1st gear.
Next time Drop it from a 6th to 4th
1st gear is super low its like a granny gear.
Didnt they get recalled for clutch fires?
Yes they did twice. But the guy made this video isn't going to say that because he wants advertising money from Chrysler and wants to also kiss the butt of the dealership he's using. These videos are so useless because they're so biased in a favorable way towards the dealership and the product they sell.
@JP Kabler....you whine too much. Just don't watch the video. I purchased this vehicle after I used my brain to make up my own mind.
@@holchr31 you were warned. I owned it for 2 years. It's a poorly mated transmission, period.
What 6 speed did they use
@@JohnKabler so the automatic is ok tho?
Nice glasses
Everything should be manual. Automatics should only be for physically impaired or lazy people.
Heel toe??? WTF?! I’m done.
Stopped the video when you said you cant heel-toe on it
