The Pi 4 2GB is a much better Pi for all round use. if you need an extra Pi 4 for a specific use that doesn’t require much ram the 1GB Pi 4 will be fine. Unfortunately the 1GB Pi 4 stills sells for a similar price to the far superior 2GB model.

That menu is probably Whisker Menu for the XFCE desktop window manager. I'm using Whisker Menu with the XFCE desktop environment along with RetroPi I installed from a Raspberry Pi OS minimal base image for my portable Pi project. I've put a Pi4 inside of a Switch Lite shell with battery grip and a 5.5" AMOLED screen.
These work great for Klipper/Octoprint. I managed to get a few on clearance from Microcenter.

Interesting thing is, I have a Pi 3 (they have 1GB RAM) that runs Chromium fine in Raspberry Pi OS. Maybe it's Twister, maybe something else is going on.

I have a basic 2 sided A4 sheet I print out. Sd, SSD, HDD, M.2 and usb sticks. I hand write any changes and reprint the sheet when it’s full.
I use Pimoroni SATA cables. I only have an early 4Gb and a recent 4Gb, so don't know if it works on all RAM sizes. I chose Pimoroni as it's sold for the Pi by a specialist Pi supplier, so should expect it to be fully compatible with all Pi 4 models.
Hi, strange behaviour of cables, I have some too, working well on some ports and not working on others. Now I am using a JSAUX from Amazon and semms to work well everywhere; about 1Gb Pi it looks a good idea for lite applications, like driving a 3d printer via octoprint, it's cheap and strong enough. Olso for retropie is a good chance, sure better then 3B+

You can find out which chip is in the USB-SATA adapter.
My experience shows that adapters with ASM1153 work with SATA 3Gb / s without any problems even with the TRIM function.
ASM1153E is supposed to work with SATA 6Gb / s, so far I haven't found a USB-SATA adapter with the chip.
The pi4 1gb usage might be smoother for advanced users with manjaro sway and surf browser.
Hi, gave a 4Gb Pi4 to my daughter for school, she needs only browsing and office suite, mailing and so on, nothing else. I have installed my preferred OS, Twister, with Libreoffice, Telegram and a few other apps. A lite OC at 2200Mhz, GPU 750 and 6 overvoltage; Storage on a Samsung titanium 32Gb USB key; tested a day long, no overheating, snappy and responsive, writer loads in a second; really no need of more performing hardware, Great!
for my Pi4's so I don't get them confused I write the memory size with a black marker on the Ethnernet port (on top)
Honestly I've only got a 4 gig pi4 (well and a 3b+ 2x zero's and zero WH's) but I'd love a 2 gig version or maybe a different SBC just for gaming with
Reminds me my old Raspberry Pi 3B+ 🥺 which i used for more than 1 year still working perfectly fine but after using Pi4 haven't used Pi3B+ because it has only 1GB of ram so i installed Plex Media server, Pi hole and open VPN Server
i have this same issue with my 2gb Pi4, my usb to sata just wont work as boot device in usb 3 slots on that pi/ works fine with everything else and works fine in the 2.0 ports
Obviously 1 gig doesn't work well and made the system look bad. So the foundation discontinued it appropriately. Thanks for the video.
Hey Lee, I know a fix for your USB3 Sata cable not being able to boot. Try plugging it into the top USB3 Port. I had the same issue and my bottom USB3 port would not boot whereas the top USB3 Port boots perfectly fine.

Hey can you make a video on installing arch linux on raspberry pi 4 , Use the armv7 as described in the wiki. I installed it and it looks great, but the thing iam tried to solve is get the audio through the analogue output on the board means through the 3.5mm jack. I could not find the drivers for it. Can you find any workaround like copying the drivers from the raspbian os and seeing if it works. I think the /proc/asound contains the drivers for the sound. I did find only hdmi audio in arch linux. Please consider solving it. I love arch as the firefox is newer than found on any other distors and works very well. Also every package is newer and stable. Love it.
Never mind iam satisfied with the manjaro sway edition as it provides the same packages and is arch. Everything is pre-defined. I love it.
I have an 8gb Pi4 and Vice City Stories did the same thing for me-upon starting the game in Retropie, the character falls endlessly.
I wish I knew more about computers.
these thick inflexible and too-long USB cables / adapters are just very annoying. What about testing, in your next videos, M.2 / SATA expansion boards with right angled USB 3 adapters instead? This makes a RPI HW setup much more compact and cleaner. It is possible to stack several boards connected to the Pi with thin flexible 5cm to 10cm USB3 cables allowing for easy addition / removal of the disks.

There are also all the expansion boards from GeekPie, GeekWorm, etc.. that would be definitely worth having a closer look for performance (NVMe vs. SATA SSD vs. SATA mechanical drives) and robustness (various HW versions for the boards and some don't have high current / voltage protection at boot time.. )
@@foobarbarfoo2377 Have two small expansion boards for NVme disks(Patriot), both with USB3 A connector at one end; Iuse an angular 180° adaptor to put the disk and board under the Pi. Everything is very compact. Added a 60x60 noctua fan at the other end of ports, vertical, + horiz Ice tower to cool down CPU. Included everything in a simply 3D printed box. The temp stays around 37-42° even when throttling at 2300Mhz
and the 1gb pi is back! (due to rising costs!)

i have only got a 1gb, bought it when they were released, just ordered a 4gb and geekmod acrylic case with ice tower..
The browsing on the 1gb is terrible.. but its not using all the memory so not sure why 4gb would be that big an improvement to be honest..
Anyway, I am glad you posted this, is illustrates what kind of difference it will make, and confirms that I can just plug it into spare tv and send my other half away to watch bloody love island catchup on the pi while I get on with proper entertainment watching maker vids on my manjaro box and using the 1gb to light up LED's and move servos and stuff with SSH :D

You need to add over_ voltage =3 to the config.txt to get it to boot consistantly !!!

Do a RUclips search for ZRAM and your looking for the video from NOVASPIRIT ...... Follow the instructions and you have a different machine...
Other than that fire up htop in terminal and you will only have 100 meg in your swapfile !! You need to edit the edit the swapfile to 2G .sudo nano /etc/dhps_swapfile

@@leepspvideo Lee i have seen this video you nailed the results 1G v 4G.....Dose not do much on a 4g pi 4 but on a pi 3 or 3b+ with SAMSUNG T5 SSD stunning performance change and that on USB2...That's the test I'd like to see 1G PI4 booting from a ssd first from USB 2 and then from USB 3.... I only have 2 x pi 3s a pi 3b+ and a 4G PI 4.. The test to understand what ZRAM dose on PI OS or ubuntu mate run HTOP and then open a web browser.. On HTOP you will see all 4 core pegged to 100% to open the browser. With ZRAM installed you may only hit 85% on all cores.. This why it takes so lone to open a browser ...CHROMIUM IS A MEMORY HOG... Try PUFFIN bowser (pikiss or piapps to install) cloud based lightning... If you keep HTOP open while you do some browsing every time your pi slows down the bars for cpu cores useage will be red (memory pegged). UBUNTU MATE 64bit on a PI 3B+ not that bad if you install ZRAM.
PS fast ssd SAMSUNG T5 is my quickest drive even quicker than my CRUCIAL NVME drive The T5 controller chip is NVME ... GOOGLE search Pi4 ssd boot and go to jamesachambers site. He has a line of code to run in terminal that runs 3 test and gives you a score. This is the fun part !! You can click enter twice to be a no body or like me first click Pi4 4G PI OS 32 G and second click dgd is me !!! NOW you have your score go back to James site use the link to his online sore board. IF your score is high enough it will be listed .. My best SAMSUNG T5 new system 10,300 worst SANDISK usb 500
