- Today I'm going to be taking a look at the Raspberry Pi 4 as a Retro Gaming console. I've been a huge fan of the Raspberry Pi for years. They are great Single Board Computers and are absolutely Beastly when it comes to emulating retro games. So lets take a look at how well it performs.

Also, for anyone wondering, it plays Shovel Knight, Stardew Valley, and Celeste very well
@Lenny Face yeah, I got half life working, albeit with some screen tearing. Same issues with Stardew Valley, but Shovel Knight and Celeste are lag free. Also, i downloaded Celeste 2, which runs very well.
You play those games on Retropie or some other Raspberry OS?
@@ayalavalva I think there's a way to get box86 working on retropie, but for the life of me I couldn't figure it out. I play these games on Raspbian. Also, I'd like to mention I've gotten Hyper Light Drifter and Steam world Heist working sense that comment
@Lenny Face what OS are you playing Morowind with on?
How do I get stardew valley to work? For me it doesnt work
Dude, this review... Just amazing, You use correct language, answer to your audience and it looks honest, everything you said. This is quality, not quantity, you have a new sub, great work!!
just got one for christmas !! super helpful video ty
Hey man just wanted you to know this video and your PS Vita fighting game video have really blown me away. I just found your channel today but you've earned a sub for sure. Keep up the good work, I look forward to watching your future videos.
Awesome video. Very quick and to the point, and it has good gameplay demonstrations. Thank you for showing off the performance.
Thanks for the video this gives me an idea of what it would be like to put into my arcade1up. Might go with a pc
Warriors was one of my favorite Rockstar games of all time - thanks for reminding me of it :)
Also the Pi 400 is nice, its built into a keyboard very cool ;)
The warriors and bully are so underrated it’s criminal. Also definitely thinking of finally getting a pi
I'm thinking about getting a third. Samsung BAR flash drives work great as alternatives to micro SD cards and twice the speed and memory. Twister OS (retropie is on the desktop,) heatsink and fan. Definitely overclock. 2100/775 all the time on my early Pi4 4GB.
Dude! So awesome, what controllers do you recommend especially for mapping N64?
really cool! what core are you using for dreamcast? redream?
Can it runs Mario kart multiplayer? Awesome review!
I'm impressed with the PS1 Tekken 3 on the Pi4, but sometimes emulation is weird. Have you tried the arcade mame versions of Tekken like Tekken Tag?
I ask because it struggles with KI GOLD, but Tekken 6 psp run smoothly. I'm wondering if it's the emulator and not the PI? Great video btw.
Bro killer instinct is one of the hardest games to emulate bc the background graphics and animations are insane
Did you run the Raspberry Pi 4 with basic clock speed?
I saw some videos where the CPU was overclocked to 2000 mhz and the CPU to 600 mhz without issues.
Was this an overclocked setup or straight out the kit with OS installed?
Base stats right out of the kit
Add love to make a gaming console out of one with original Xbox Nintendo 64 and playstation games on it for a couple of classics
Can you tell me how WWF No Mercy and WCW vs nWo Revenge runs? Don’t wanna buy the Pi 4 without knowing how my favorite games are playing.
Could you point me to video/explanation what are those beautiful hand held treasures you showed at the beginning of the video? 😳😳😳
Scroll through my channel brother. They're all clips from previous Videos I've made.
Where did you get all the bios and rom files?
If this could play PS2 I’d get one in an instant
Ps2 is a way too different deal. Emulation for it sucks ass.
It cant even play n64 right
x86 for the foreseeable
@@wingedhussar1453 I've been playing n64 games on it save and go back to it and it never saves my file for some reason cuz I played Ocarina and Mario 64 went back to the save and it's never there. Am I doing something wrong.
@@wingedhussar1453 it runs all n64 games perfectly.
What controller do you use with it?
You sound like the other RUclipsr ETA Prime lol
Im a begginer to making mini retro consoles and such. Is this kit easy to assemble and does it require me to solder it and how do I connect it to a screen to make it portable? Please and thanks!
No Solder required. There's a ton of different plug and play screens on the market. The raspberry pi is a fantastic piece of kit. Great for all experience levels. Excellent learning tool. You'll love it.
You're a beginner to electronics in general if you can't find answers to these questions by looking at pictures
Watched so I wanted dro drop a comment. I have yet to try emulation mainly because if never having looked into ROMs.
Dont get roms of a random sight off Google. If I were you go to reddit r/rom community and click on the megathread. You get all the roms from there
@@josephfanelli2611 thanks!
I removed some non-working roms from my flash drive, but those same roms remain in my Raspberry Pi 4 device. They're still there even after I restart Emulation Station. Why is this? How can I remedy this?
how did you add psx emulator? on mine it doesn't come preinstalled and when i install it, it says "not available for your system"
Warriors NEED TO COME BACK ASAP!!
If you're able to install RetroPie, could I install Coinops? That is what I'd get it for
If someone is only interested in NES, SNES, and Genesis games, would the Pi 3 work just as well as the Pi 4?
Absolutely. Even a Pi 2 or Pi zero would work fine for that.
Wow that cooling fan has almost all the blades blocked
Nice
When i buy a Raspberry Pi , How can i import the games ? (Retro games) to (playstation 3 or 4)
No N64 emulator for Raspian yet?
Is the 2gb version worth for emulation?
What about controllers? Can you add two Bluetooth ones or two wired ones. I'd love to know what you could hook up to it.
Yes, you can can add a bunch. I was using a xbox one controller in this video, but there's a ton of usb or bluetooth gamepads that can be used on it

Top 5! How many ways can you even play retro games?
I purchased LABISTS Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Complete Starter PRO Kit with 32GB Micro SD Card (4GB RAM). I'd like to add only old school SNES, Genesis, and arcade games (from the 80s and 90s). How do i do that? Is it hard? I heard arcade roms need to be done with MAME. What's the best way to accomplish all this?
Install RetroPie they have a really good installer guide on their website, or I think you can actually do it with the Rasberry Pie image maker tool also. Then just get your roms on the SD and off you go :)
What if I bought a pre loaded raspberry pi 4 as with games can I just insert it and play those games already loaded ?
Yes
Can it run Espgaluda and DoDonPachi DaiOuJou?
Will this fit in a mini n64?
Will the 4gb version run everything as the 8gb did ??
Ya...emulation doesn't require much ram
You should’ve enabled the FPS when talking about performance. Missed opportunity.
Well, what IS your absolute favorite?
@gameheadnes
What size monitor
Can you do a tutorial on how to download the ROMs. I’ve bought a raspberry pi 4 and have had trouble finding the ROMs and downloading them
Hi, could you PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE share the tweaks you made in the psp emulator? It would be great!
What do you need? Maybe I can help?
@@farisomeragic8900 Hi and thanks for your effort! I simply need some advise how to configure the psp emulator to run best on the raspberry pi 4. Can you recommend a certain config?
@@mr.nobody9716 you can always install vulkan driver to pi4 there is tutorial on you tube. But there is just a pain in the ass to run midnight club wipeout pure and chains of Olympus. Try overclocking 2.4 gHz and low resolution ti run better harder games. But PSP on Pi 4 is absoloute beast , if you are running via ppsspp emulator standalone
@@farisomeragic8900 I run ppsspp within retropie. Should I run it under raspberry pi OS for better results?
@@mr.nobody9716 nah, there is no difference. Try to overclock gpu and CPU and what is that game or games that you are having trouble with
Mine doesn’t like running the n64 emulator. Dukenukem zero hour and destruction derby won’t ever work right
The warriors was one of my favorites, had it on xbox!
Anyone know how to fix the analog issue?
Can anyone put in a a good direction for a good systems with all the old games DC n64 etc. Trying find a system my other one broke.
Android based devices. or you could get cheap AMD Athlon 3000g pc or older intel prebuild from Dell, Lenovo, HP.
Does anyone know if it plays final fantasy & role playing games?
Ikaruga*
I only got the 2gig
I sure am tired of seeing Ikuraga.....
How it the pi4 2gb as retropie?
Runs same as 8gb. I have a 2gb model myself
Console bga bord
The pi 4 isnt a monster for emulation. The emulation used for playstation is awful and very basic as compared to most other emulators for psx emulation. Even snes looks like shit and runs slow trying to use the most basic of shaders and filters. I will say that the very best emulation on this thing is psp. Most of these issues come down to some bad choices for the emulators and the limitations of the hardware.
Video is 2 years old. And at the time it was an emulation monster, especially compared to the Pi 3. But as for today? There are much better options for the price.
