- No matter where you travel, you’ll find folks combining dough, sauce, and cheese to create their unique spin on pizza. In this episode of Grubbin’, Chef Thomas DeSantis of Fire & Wood Catering makes the case for New York style’s timeless flavors while Detroit Pizza Depot co-founder Hunter Leslie sells us on Motown’s airy crust and crispy edges.
As a standup comedian, @TraeCrowderLiberalRedneck travels all around the country, so he’s no stranger to folks insisting that their regional cuisine is the best in the world. North Carolina vs. Texas BBQ, New York vs. Detroit Pizza, Nashville vs. Korean Fried Chicken - the beefs never end! In this series, Trae talks to chefs and experts from across the country to determine whose grub reigns supreme.

It's like comparing Spaghetti&Meatballs to Lasagna. They're both delicious.
Not even a question. Once you've had Detroit you'll throw rocks at all others. I lived near the original Buddy's as a teen. Now I make my own vegan and gluten free.
Back in the '70's, I worked at pizza places in Detroit. We made both kinds of pizza. The square, deep dish, Detroit-style was always the best. Filling, satisfying, delicious!
This was unexpectedly hilarious!
Hey Trae -- do this with Philly cheesesteaks vs New York steak & cheese!!!!!
Chop cheese?
Although fresh made, fresh baked pizza is the best, if you've never heard of Detroit style you might try Motor City Pizza Co. from the freezer section...I know, I know....but it's not the frozen pizza you're thinking of and will give you a good feel for Buddy's Detroit Pizza.
I like both, but given choice I’ll take Detroit style. Gotta love that caramelized crust.
Had me at caramelized. Peace/JT
Tomaso's in Halifax, 1980s. Each pie handmade by the man himself, an Italian-Canadian, originally from Naples. Pretty authentic 'za. Volume was never Tom's way, neither. You ordered in the afternoon, and you picked it up in the evening, when Tom said it would be ready. It always was, and Tom always had a story or two for your visit. He was a proper host - even for take-out patrons. He made his pizza an _experience._
I never wanted to visit Detroit till I learned about Detroit-style pizza. It sounds absolutely delicious.
Chicago is truly delish and unique, but it requires a plate. No carrying it while walking. 😊
NY is just perfect. Fold and enjoy!
Detroit pizza!
I want both pozzas, but the Detroit guy won the last point with his pitch whereas New York dropped the fuckin’ ball big time.
Detroit is the closest to my Sicilian Nana's homemade pizza. Wisconsin cheese is the best in the world!
Colasessano's - Sicilian square pizza - Fairmont, WV (birthplace of the Pepperoni Roll). I need say no more.
In high school, we had Meola's pizza across the street. Chewy crunchy crust with molten cheese that you had to fold in half to eat - It was Arizona but it was real New York pizza and it will always be my favorite.
NY guy talking about his pizza being crispy while the image is of a woman holding a flaccid doink of a slice just swangin from her hand. But hey I guess she’s smiling, so… 😂
The New York reheat comment shut him up, too. Still, the Detroit guy wasn't any better.
Trae, on the road in gas stations around the country, you'll see signs that say Hunt Bros Pizza. Buy a whole pizza & you won't be sorry! Occasionally they'll have slices drying out in the display. Don't get those. A fresh Hunt Bros Pizza, with all kinds of toppings available, is a thing of beauty! At least in Louisiana it is. I can't vouch for other states' gas station cuisine.
Casey's breakfast pizza,,, Peace/JT
Midwest Casey's pizza.
For a 2:00 AM booze soaker I'd go with the Detroit style . . but for everything else it's NYC Baby !
Thank you for mentioning build order on Detroit pizza. It's a thing even our local chains don't seem to understand when they call their soggy deep dish Detroit-style. If you put the sauce on the dough the dough doesn't cook where it touches the sauce. Or if it does it cooks like bao. Which is nasty. Sauce. On. Top. Usually cooked on the side and ladled on after baking at the best places. That being said, as a life-long Detroiter, I gotta say: New Haven is hands down the best style of pizza in the States. In Detroit that's Tomatoes Apizza.
Just so there's no confusion, I make the best pizza! ;^}
I'm in my 60s and have tried a lot of pizzas over the years. Detroit-style is better than any except, arguably, homemade. I've been to Buddy's (and Shield's) when it wasn't as common, but thankfully it's easy to find now.
Trae rocks!! #both
Thin crust for me.
i know people will say it's not really pizza, but chicago deep dish all the way
NY loses, because the supposed NYer can't help but be condescending to the rest of the country. Besides, NY pizza isn't everywhere because it's better; McDonald's isn't better than all of the other burger joints it's just ubiquitous, because of aggressive business practices. Same goes for NY style pizza.
The thumbnail has failed the question. The answer is New Haven, CT. It's OK to disagree, but you're wrong. 😉🤣
Where?
I think Yale not a slice
@@MahkyVmedia1 Ernies Pizza, Modern pizza, Pepe's, Pizza House, Da Lenga Nolo, Bar pizza. I'm not sure I've ever had bad pizza in New Haven.
i love deep dish, but i honestly can't remember detroit and chicago style being different (other than square vs circle). i guess that means i need someone to bring me both kinds... for _"research"_
Once I had Detroit style literally no other pizza compares 😅
What about the 7-11 2:45am one eyed drunk style pizza on the uber ride home. That one is pretty popular too !
❤
The correct answer is Chicago.
Hey Trae, skews buddy!
You were really reading there, Trae.
I'm surprised that he didn't say "no relation" with regard to his name DeSantis.
Pizza Pizza Pizza
As a native St Louisan I feel a little cheated that we didn't even get a mention, but at least they agreed Chicago Style isnt pizza.
Detroit wins this one.
It's not GWEH-rah, it's GEH-rah. The "u" just signals a hard "g". Otherwise "ge" sounds like "heh" as in gente (HEN-teh) and general (heh-neh-RAHL). Okay, then. ...Btw these pizzas are too thin or too thick. I like crust mid-range, chewy inside, crispy outside, a touch sweet.
Fugghedaboutit. It's the water! NYC baby! 🍕 all others are pretenders.
Chicago?
New York is so good, how is this debatable?
I’ve never heard of Detroit pizza. Isn’t deep dish pizza from Chicago? Caramelized cheese edges sounds like dessert!
Totally different thing. But I am from Kenosha, Wisconsin, where Italian immigrants and their descendants are about 1/3 of the population. We eat a thin crust, round pizza cut into squares with cheese all the way up to the edge that never ever sits around or gets reheated. Lots of cheese, Italian sausage, onion and sometimes mushrooms.
@@jenniferburns2530 That sounds great, but SQUARES!!? That is so funny to me (an ex New Yorker)!
@@erikavaleries I know it's weird, but they are smaller and easier to eat than huge slices.
As a current and always NYer, there is no other pizza.
@@BrookeMcLymond Correct answer ❤️ From an ex New Yorker! I miss it and the pizza 🍕
ny = too greasy n stale, detroit = too much n need a fork n knife. theres only ONE pizza, that is from Marion's, in believe it or not, fuckin dayton ohio !!!......i know.......i'd bet cash on it !!!
Allow me to be a shit disturber, here:
Chicago.
Go!
