Finding The Best Diner Breakfast In Los Angeles | Food Tours | Food Insider
I can’t express how happy I am whenever a new food tours video gets posted with these two
ya know nobody has ever heard about l.a.
When you see these two banter buddies on your suggested. Instant click!

Agree👍🇦🇺
same
what a bromance ❤❤everybody dance now dance and dance everybody dance
Ew
One of the low key things that’s enjoyable about these is that they compare and contrast different perspectives without it turning into a pissing contest
As someone who lives in LA, I am very glad that Harry picked Norms because that has always been a childhood favorite dinner and is always known for affordability. Also love these kinds of videos with Harry and Joe so keep producing these!
iykyk
And I love reading comments from locals like you! 😄
I love Norms. It’s my childhood. I’d always go there with my grandparents in the early 2000’s as a kid
Norm's isn't good at all. Yuck !
Norms has gone down hill since they sold the name. 10
YESSSSSS!! THE KINGS HAVE RETURNED! 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Food Tours is such an amazing series, I think at this point I enjoy it even more than Food Wars (which I love a lot)... it lets Harry and Joe's personalities shine even more.
These places are great, but I cant get over the prices in LA. Insane breakfast prices.
Bro come to sweden these prices are low compared to ours.
Denny's is just as expensive.
We just love the prices, I gotta tell you.
Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in the US. It is sometimes called Fat Tuesday, Faschnacht Day, or Mardi Gras. Mardi = Tuesday. Gras = Fat.
Yup, we call it Fat Tuesday here in FL. Funnily enough, many people just give up meat on Friday for lent, but I once gave up coffee. For the whole of lent. Never again. >_
@@KenjiShiratsuki coffee for 40 days? No thank you. Strangely though my catholic grandparents would never eat meat on any Friday and at school they would only serve fish on a Friday as well
@@bernardcarthy2365 It's not strange, it was a really common thing
@@Hana9916The Filet O Fish at McDs was invented in Baltimore because it was in a Catholic neighbourhood and there was very few hamburger sales on Fridays.
Most people here 🇨🇦call it 🥞Pancake Tuesday. McD’s Hotcakes and sausage fits the bill!
My grandfather actually got an extras role for Dreamer just by being a regular at a diner in my hometown. He got to eat breakfast for his scenes.
Good story 😊🍳🥓🍔☕️
That's so fun!!
It feels like we are eavesdropping on an old friends conversation ❤ love their dynamic.
This was a fun one to shoot! Every place was amazing could have done 10 more 🥞🧇☕💕
diners are a quintessential part of america, good choice!
Now I gotta make some pancakes tomorrow morning 😂
with long siestas needed in between though 🥱🛌💤😴💤
Cool
Hey Joe!! You should share more with Harry: don’t promise him you’ll get him some meatloaf, and then make him have to reach over the table to get a tiny piece because you’ve dived into the middle with no thought of sharing that delightful dish. That’s just mean! 😮
Growing up in LA, then moving like an hour East, I really appreciated Norms more. I was like happy when I’d go out to LA on a night out and end up there at 3 AM, it was a treat. When they finally opened one up in my neighborhood, I was so hyped, and realized that a lot of people felt that way about it, idk what it is, but their steak is amazing, especially at 3 am when you’re plastered.
are u an anchor baby?
@@gmfitzgYou definitely are though.
hows inflation compare to then?
Can this become its own channel already - what an amazing series.
Nick's Cafe - $13 for a tiny portion of biscuits & gravy. Yes, that's definitely LA.
I also thought the price was insane
Nyc too
The next place had $9.00 sausage?
@@Z0mbieKr0w Gotta love LA.
It wasn't even two biscuits lol. That's an extra biscuit for $3-5 at most places. If I order biscuits and gravy for $13, there better be two biscuits and loving amount of gravy or one big ass biscuit and extras like eggs or potatoes.
I've been with Joe all this time saying "Not a scone!" and finally Harry confirms it's not a scone. lol
Fantastic! Absolutely loved this episode. This is by far one of the best series on RUclips, please never stop guys!
This series is scratching that itch of the shows Travel Channel used to show.
The "maple syrup" at Norms is almost certainly corn syrup.
Considering how affordable Norm's was, don't really expect a big jug of real maple syrup. I would expect that at Nick's with their prices.
Yup definitely. Not “100% genuine natural maple syrup” but tbh I hate the real stuff.
No one cares..
Another great episode! Hanging out in LA diners and shooting the breeze - a great Saturday morning episode over coffee!
“McDonald’s breakfast sausage.” 🤣 Finally we have a reference for explaining the flavor of American breakfast sausage to Brits.
Chicken-fried is an adjective. Chicken-fried steak is like schnitzel made from cube steak instead of veal. With the seasoned batter like fried chicken and some cream gravy, probably peppery.
Biscuits are definitely not scones, however much they may look alike to the British.
They don’t have to have gravy, though that’s certainly one of the tasty options. They can be eaten warm with some butter spread and melted inside. Or with jam or honey or molasses etc. Or as a breakfast sandwich with ham or a sausage patty or a fried chicken fillet or some pork tenderloin or a piece of breakfast steak (possibly chicken-fried) etc.
Don’t save pancakes, crepes and waffles for Mardi Gras.
So many kinds of hash browns.
The sausage and egg McMuffin is 😋😋
We don't "save" pancakes for Shrove Tuesday haha. It's a tradition, not a restriction.
The American throwing shade at the Brit for the lack of free refills on tea is so patriotic. Some things never change.
I’ll take free healthcare over free refills 😂
@@sherlockgnomes8971 free healthcare that doesn’t work you mean?
@@sherlockgnomes8971 free healthcare being overwhelmed by illegal immigrants?
@@sherlockgnomes8971it’s only free at point of use, you paid for it via your wages…. Plus it’s a crumbling relic
@@Matty8787True, but still way better than what the average U.S. citizen can get without major cash [or a great health insurance plan with their employer, if they’re fortunate enough to have that kind of a job].
Huevos Rancheros is NOT TEX MEX, Its a classic Mexican dish you can order in Mexico. Also, LA doesn't serve "Tex Mex" So Cal Mexican and Tex Mex aren't the same
Huevos rancheros at Mel's diner so good 😊
You’re spot on 💯💯💯.
Well, Texan here. Southern California huevos rancheros are of a different recipe than in South Texas Tex-Mex. Southern New Mexico and Northern México have its own recipes. Main ingredient differences are due to different peppers.
Not a Texan, not a Californian/New Mexican/Arizonaian...I agree there is a difference...CA feels like northern Mexican food...I can't get a chimichanga in Central Mexico (& don't want to) but I know TX comes thru...
was hoping to god someone else caught that, nothing Tex-Mex about Huevos Rancheros. Look at its origins
I’m a Londoner .. been in California over 40 years .. Cali Diners are incredible
That’s crazy mate. There’s a lot of dudes from across the pond here in LA🕺😎
Actually fake maple syrup is mostly corn syrup. He is right!
My thoughts exactly!
Joe needs to take Harry to Vegas and make a buffet episode. Harry would have a heart attack 🙂
Yes, please, Guys - do Vegas! 🎰 (I have always wondered what those all-you-can-eat buffets there are like)!!
FREE MIMOSAS!
Fun Fact: A1 Steak Sauce is infact British and was made for King George IV. HP sauce was more popular in the UK and flooded A1 out of the market, so A1's headquarters moved to USA and became one of the most popular sauces there.
I feel that every UK breakfast/brunch spot either do pancakes, french toast or waffles. A better choice now than ever! Especially for some us of us that don’t want a large savoury meal for breakfast
Agreed, pancakes are extremely common on breakfast menus the the UK
I agree, pancakes are almost always on the menu nowadays in the UK. Even in Spain on your summer hols you’ll find pancakes on the menu in British bars. 😂
"I'm Harry from Food Wars!" GIVE THIS MAN A STAR
I like that they're driving down Hollywood and then end up at the Saugus cafe like an hour north. Don't get me wrong, it's cool and still part of LA county, just funny as a local.
Hahaha....I thought where are they going in Hollywood? Musso & Frank? Mel's Diner? Carney's? Nope, it's in Santa Clarita near Magic Mountain!
Dont stop making these please
So happy Norms got a shoutout here. Love Norms!
I have to make some pancakes tomorrow l
Norm’s is a classic.
The best! So lucky to live right up La Cienega from that location lol
"Over 100 years old" will never impress a British person
😂
2:30 so true. The Californians on SNL missed that. When you first meet up with people it is nearly always the first thing you talk about: where did you park and how long did it take?
Karina: "Oh my God, the 405? This time of day? It's gonna be like jammed! What you should do is get off at Sepulveda, take that down to Sunset, then go down Veteran and over to Wilshire, past Devon's house."
Stewart: "Karina, how do you know where Devon lives?"
(Snap cuts to characters with surprised or puzzled faces, then awkward looks in the mirror as dramatic music plays...)
It's Googies Architecture. They were never designed to look like car dealerships. They were designed for the car culture which is completely different. I am an Architect that worked at ADNA who designed many many diners throughout the country and beyond. (Ships, Norms, Bob's...like that. Now they do Starbucks et al.)
Yeah I kinda figured this dude was talking out his ass… he talks to much and tries to sound like he’s knowledgeable..
For those who thought it was always sunny in L.A. it does get a few storms a year that last a week or two. Also, in June and July the sky is often quite dark until about noon. It is called "June gloom" and "July sky". These conditions although it looks like it's about to rain don't often lead to rain but possibly a light drizzle for an hour or so.
May gray and June gloom…where the heck to July sky come from?!
@@JC8752-de4ig I never heard May grey. I do remember many fourth of Julys where we would go to a parade or a holiday program in the morning and it was always gloomy in the morning and cleared just around noon.
@@BigSirZebras how interesting! Well, at the very least we now know that we have rhymes to deal with these overcast conditions sometimes for the better part of the day, for 3 months out of the year. It’s annoying to have to layer up living in “sunny SoCal” at this time of the year.
As a Canadian we have A1 and HP sauces readily available. Growing up we were an HP sauce house.
We call it Pancake Tuesday in Canada not by the formal name. But have heard that term.
The huevos rancheros looked great but you can tell they were on the “fusion” side. Regular no fuss huevos rancheros are epic. 🍳🇲🇽
Yessssss we get it, only Mexicans know how to cook 😂 y'all sound just like my mom
Everyone can cook. But gringos should call that dish ranch style eggs. Real rancheros no llevan papa y carne de res güey.
@@DefensisIndusMexicans did cook it.There are Mexicans cooking in every restaurant kitchen in LA. 😆
@@matias2911You can customize them at Nick's. They serve it in a more traditional way too.
@@matias2911Thanks for telling me that. I might have ordered huevos rancheros somewhere and been extremely disappointed that they contained neither beef nor potatoes, the two ingredients in Harry’s dish that made me think “Ooooooh! This I have got to try!”
As a midwesterner, biscuits and Gravy for $13 is criminal.
Yeah. It’s L.A. So so expensive! (Just like London 🇬🇧).
@HRHDMKYT not at all like London, we fought a war, willing to fight another.
No wonder that Nick's doesn't need to expand. They charge $25 USD for bacon and eggs. And bear in mind, in America you have to tip, so that's over $30 actual cost.
It’s $16, not $25. Still too much but $25 is not accurate. I live in NYC and any given diner here wouldn’t charge you more than $10 for that plate.
Don' t forget the additional 10% tax.
fr, i live in Indiana and i can get a 3 egg omelette with a side of hash browns and 2 pancakes for basically the same price😆
the cost is whatever they want it to be
@@unreal4good367 Supply and demand.
That second breakfast Joe and Harry sampled at Saugus looked like a traditional Sunday morning breakfast in my family. Just awesome.
4:46 The pig clock next to the LAPD recruitment poster is effing 😂 More pigs signage. Great.
I was taught that using A1 was an insult to a steak.
Me too!
I think it depends how good the steak is.
Not to ruin your day, but my mom dips her steaks in ketchup 🤦♀️
The (crown) jewel of the channel!
Well, I just learned something. Being an Australian, I always thought that meatloaf was a British recipe and not an American invented thing! It’s not a huge thing down under but we do like it!!
It originates in German and Scandinavian cuisine, which got brought into the US through immigration. As a Brit I’d say it’s not really a thing here, I've only seen meatloat in American media and some American style diners.
@@lucinae8512 I definitely had meatloaf at school in Britain but it was disgusting. Don't know if it has much in common with what you get in the States. Seemed more like something from the days of rationing (we used to get quite a lot of that sort of thing -desserts with condensed milk...)
Meatloaf is cheap Great Depression-era food. I ate so much of it growing up. My mom would wrap the outside in turkey bacon!
@@lucinae8512 As a Brit we have it often, best with mushroom sauce
Food Tours with these two are always fab.
Every Food Tours episode is a must-watch!
25 dollars for ham and egg is robbery lmao
Can't speak to LA but growing up in NYC and living in Boston... honestly that struck me as pretty normal. Places like this you're either paying more rent for a place with a functional kitchen or you're footing the bill for eating all your meals outside the home
Its nearly 1AM...guess I gotta watch, and plan what I'm having for breakfast now lol
I love how American Diners' breakfast are so diverse, I got a lot of unexpected wonder from your content.
Genuinely enjoy this series. These two have amazing chemistry together.
A1 steak sauce was originally created by a Brit - was apparently popular in the UK up until the 1970s. Became popular in the US right about when it fell out of favor in the UK.
Just a note on the quip you made about cockney rhyming slang. The reason that it was used was because the slang made it harder to understand what was being spoken about, not because it made it faster to say, so you are right that apples and pears is harder to say than stairs, but if you are out of the loop then you won't realize they aren't talking about fruit but where the valuables in a house may be for instance.
The coffe thing in UK shocked me. They don’t have free refills because they don’t do pots of drip coffee. Also, they don’t have cream for your coffee (in the land of cows and butter), just milk.
Coffee should be black...
Go to France / Spain / Italy and many other European countries and ask for coffee with cream they will be so confused 😂 You American’s are so obsessed with dairy and sugar😅
Coffee is about £3 plus here so free refills ain’t happening
To be fair most people I know in the UK wouldn’t want to have more than one cup of coffee in a row, generally one or two cups a day is considered a healthy amount
@@frederickvondinkerberg7721 Coffee should be however someone likes it.
Maggie's cafe in Lewisham, south London does tea refills diner-style. They walk around with a big jug of tea in one hand and a big jug of milk in the other and top you up while you're eating
Just came back from 2 weeks in London, would’ve loved to have visited had I known about Maggie’s! 😢
Shrove Tuesday is Mardi Gras in the US.
found this hilarious in its irony. Madi Gras here in Australia is one of the biggest Pride parade / event in the world. Some religious folk may find that a bit offensive 😄😄
I assume the Diners After Dark version of this video will have to be PPV. I feel like Harry would need to experience the diner after the bars close to fully appreciate why they are open 24-7.🤣😂🤣
I was surprised joe didn’t know that. He was talking about an old guy drinking endless coffee all night which happens but they get slammed around 1:30am.
A fight is almost guaranteed and the waitresses get the drunk tips. Could be a penny could be a 100
Love this series!!! Excellent locations, awesome hosts, gentle editing, thanks for the entertaining videos, I really appreciate it!!
Nothing beats a good diner breakfast. There are many other hidden gem diners all over LA but I'm not telling.
I live for these! Please do moreee
Fantastic! What a great duo Harry and Joe make! Please do breakfast episodes in more cities. Oooh, maybe Berlin!
These food tours are great. I love how Harry is slowly being “Americanized.” This time around he didn’t need to pace himself. 🥞 🍳 👏 😋
Love when these 2 get together in IRL ❤😊!
Fun fact - A1 sauce is british. It was made in 1824 for king george IV. It was really popular here until eventually other sauces won out. You can still get it here but its not that popular anymore
As someone who has lived most of my life in Virginia, I'm glad you included a place like Norms! Very similar to some places we have here like the Silver Diner and the Texas Inn.
Aw Norm's looked amazing 😋🤤
WOOHOO! My favorite show on youtube!
Nice work gentlemen. A US breakfast is excellent! If you go into a lot of cafes and restaurants for breakfast in the U.K. you’ll get American style pancakes. Syrup and bacon is a popular topping.
I don’t always enjoy this type of videos but I really liked this one. The guys have such a good friendship.
My late dad used to love the bone-in ham at Nicks. Their home made salsa is spicy and delicious. I go for the uber tasty corn beef hash, also made in house. Horrid coffee though, every time
Yes, the corn beef is good. The eggs benedict are great, too. They have different versions. Coffee has varied for me. Sometimes fine and sometimes not so much.

You guys are great! Please do a New Jersey Diner tour!
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. The "shrove" part refers to confession (see definition of "shrive"). Churches typically wouldn't offer confessions for the first few weeks of Lent, so you would go to have the priest hear your confession while the sacrament was available. The pancake angle comes from an old custom the Church no longer practices, but has remained as a tradition. Traditionally, you were not allowed to cook with butter, tallow, oil, shortening, or any other fat during Lent, so on Shrove Tuesday you would finish off all the fat you had in your pantry, and one way to use it all up was to eat lots of pancakes.
Always wanted to go to a true US diner that last one with the semi retro futuristic 1905's vibe looked great!
Gosh, I remember eating like this 20 years ago. Rock on gents, rock on.
I suspect the free refill vs paying for each serving had something to do with how rationing lasted in Britain for many years after WW2. In U.S. rationing ending pretty quickly and the economy took off like crazy.
nobody in the UK would want to drink 4 or 5 cups of coffee in one sitting
Can't go wrong with Norms. I used to go there with my family all the time when I lived in Southern California. Always packed with people. It's definitely comfort food as it's meant to be.
The price is seriously ridiculous in LA
25 bucks plus tax and tips for dish😬😬 adding the coffee it’s a 40 bucks breakfast
Always a good day when a food tours vid drops
The best duo in all of internet food collabs is back again!

Makes me miss New Jersey diners. I'm not expecting gourmet food, but I am expecting to get full and enjoy a cozy atmosphere. And whatever sweet treats are behind the counter.
Nick's logo is fitting
All I need is Harry, Joe, and Big Batches.
We need a México vs UK Food Wars in the future 🇲🇽🇬🇧
Omg Philippe does amazing breakfast with their pork chops and a salsa to go with it. The pancakes and French Toast are great
Norms no, Panns yes. And nearby, The Serving Spoon.
As a Brit living in the US, no one will ever convince me American bacon beats British bacon. 😅
3:11 24 dollars for ham and eggs is crazyyyyyyyy
24 bucks for huevos rancheros, huh.... $25 for ham and eggs? Some good ganja in CA I guess. Sheesh....
25 yr old born and raised in LA …. this is why I cook most meals but especially breakfast at home. $50 for two breakfast plates not including coffee and biscuits & gravy is incredible especially for eating outside a shack in the rain
Yeah, prices went up after Covid, around $4-5 per dish.
17:21 HP fruity sauce is the only sauce you ever need, there is absolutely nothing better.
Love your content boys wherever your videos are shot, but it'd be amazing if we could get more from outside LA/NYC/London!
A1 steak sauce was actually originally British and was popular in Britain in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was exported to the US around then, took off there and, for some reason, faded out of the UK market.
I thought $35 for steak and eggs was a lot but that steak was thick af. 👍
Your passion for great food and your engaging storytelling make this a joy to watch. Thank you for taking us along on this tasty adventure, and keep up the amazing work! 🍳🥓🥞☕✨
Good video again...but those prices for bfast is insane....we can get a brfast 2 times that big for half the cost
I think you guys need to come up with a rating system.
Ambiance: 1 or 5 or 10
Price: 1 or 5 or 10
Each dish: 1 or 5 or 10
Service: 1 or 5 or 10
...and then find the average scores or each place and call that the winner.
Shove Tuesday would be an "equivalent" to Mardi Gras, or fatty Tuesday, where people just go wild with eating whatever they want.
seinfeld and costanza vibes
I went to the UK for the first time a couple months ago and had a lot of food questions; after eating lots of restaurant and fast food in London I can say pretty safely that the biggest difference between our food isn’t what we eat, or the sugar, or even the portions, but SALT…American food is so much saltier or just more spiced in general
