For me it took about 10 years. I started before you could get tips and instructions in RUclips clips (2003) And also I had horrible instructors. So for ten years I was trying and then backing off it. But as Pepe proved- it is simple and can be achieved in a week. Here are my tips: 1. Learn how to sheet in hard- because the forward loop is a sail trick- it’s a catapult- and what makes you rotate is sheeting in hard with the sail. Release the tension from your forward hand and relax it- kinda letting the sail go away but still holding the boom, and pull the back hand hard- get the boom to your chest. I saw videos of people learning it on the sand with a finless board and a smaller sail- getting the rotation on the sand. You can also practice the rotation and getting its feeling while in the straps but not planning- rotating slowly into the water (kinda half way) 2. You need to learn to surf downwind unhooked of the harness yet with good power in your sail and execute a decent jump downwind (then comes the rotation). If you won’t go downwind, it will be more difficult to rotate. 3. Enlarge your foot straps that your feet will go all the way in- otherwise you will be thrown of them. 4. Also try to get your back leg bent- heel to your ass- this keeps you more compact during the rotation, and prevents you to get fired off your board. 5. After you jump downwind try to be with your body over the board- kinda but leaning forward- many guys along with the sheeting in lean backwards and can’t get the rotation. Sheet in hard- but also lean a bit forward- be over the board. 6. I learned it in a lake. I think the best place to learn it is in the ocean with ramps and side shore wind. That’s about all the tips I can give.
Same as you, I taught myself way before videos. Can't tell you how many times I fell on the mast (20 stitches one time) because I didn't understand about turning downwind or reaching back. Anyway, I'm beyond that now. One thing I remember trying that actually messed me up in the long run was trying them on long boards or on the beach. It messed me up because tucking your feet is so important. When you practice on the beach or off a long board you have a tendency to straighten your legs while jumping. Bad habit.
This must be the best forward learning video out there, the guy is so positive and makes such unbelievable progress it's infectious - and there's the key to learning forwards... Be positive, don't let go, break the mental barrier and build from there!!
Inspiring, plenty of joyness, nice common sense following the right coaches, and capacity to break fears and face the new challenges with passion and technique. I wouldn´t expect less from one of my best friends. I love you! Legend! ;)
That is so awesome!!!🤙🤙 just another reason living in the US is tough.....no clinics with kick ass teachers like Big Ben! The energy you bring is amazing and cheers to Pepe and his awesome forward loops...🤙🤙🤙😁
Pepe! You're great, so positive! I would like to join you in the clinic learning frontloop, every minute would be fun! Stay the way you are in the video, stay the child inside!
It's Cape Town.. a few different spots in the video (mainly Sunset.. Melkbos) We do the clinics in End of jan and Feb. In 2020 we have 3 week-long clinics.. but all are sold out.
Pepe is a veeeerrryyy positive person. Much fun to watch his joy. Legend indeed!
