Life as a teacher's husband; making sure that she keeps herself sane when she marks exam papers through the night. Thankful for the love shared by the interviewees who are appreciative of their work.
All these relates to Kiasu Syndrome which Singaporeans seem to epitomise for Singapore lifestyle. The pressure is inevitable as Singapore leaders want every Singaporeans to be the best in their fields. What else can they do, huh???
Parents must be mindful and realized that their children do not belong to the Teachers. They are there to teach and educate them. If their children cannot study well or do well in school, do not blame the Teachers. Blame your own self. Teachers are also human beings. When I was in primary one in 1954, pupils were scared and respectful to their Teachers. But now, Teachers are fearful of students, why???
Not the Teachers who knows their stuff & can communicate what they want the students to learn. Those Teachers who are fearful of their students- all I can advise is brush up your communication skills, know your stuff & deliver the stuff that do not bore the students. Get role models of popular Teachers, how they do it etc. Then only then you can be assertive. Just friendly advice.
It's not easy being a teacher, yeah they put up a happy front but they are actually burnt out.they will be grateful if they don't have to handle admin work of their student.
SDP also proposes to abolish the PSLE, and this should be complemented by broadening the curricula and reducing the workload. He added: “Such an approach will enrich our students’ educational experience and prepare them for a future that will require them to be well-rounded, intelligent individuals.” He also said that class-size should be reduced to no more than 20 students per teacher. This will enhance teacher-pupil interaction. On using education to reduce inequality, Prof Tambyah pointed out that school- and class-ranking be scrapped. Schools will not segregate pupils according to their examination results. “This is because education is not about competition with one’s classmates but learning through collaboration and teamwork with one’s peers,” he noted. Competition for top-ranked schools is unhealthy and has inflicted serious psychological damage, according to mental health professionals, on our children. The SDP believes that education must be the process where an individual learns to discover oneself and, in doing so, endeavour to improve the human condition. For the sake of our nation’s future, it is important that we teach our children that reading and learning can be enjoyable and intrinsically rewarding.
I find the details of these comments very lofty ideas but skewered. Where are you to find more highly qualified teachers when currently there is a shortage( Australia, US for example) Survival of the fittest has already left most of the students attending after school tuition until they are so exhausted( a video upload showing how Singapore students excelled in their PISA results). Where can they have time to read???
If you think about it, working as a teacher is the same as any professionals. Just like accounting, lawyers or doctors, all of them put in long hours after official work hours to wee hours. Why are teachers so special that are being consistently highlighted over and over again, they should look into all professionals.

Pressure comes not just from parents but also demanding principals, department heads, KPIs and appraisal systems.
