Hello Pastor, I am a conductor (orchestral and choral). The St. John Passion is one of the greatest musical masterworks ever composed. Thanks for getting the word out about this work. This piece of music changed my life in 2015. I heard it performed by a world-class conductor and ensemble, and I decided on that night to devote the rest of my life to Christian music. Throughout the whole performance, I felt like I wasn’t even listening to music, but like I was watching the Passion happen before my eyes. It was like hearing the text again for the first time - so alive! I hope to bring this music back to the Lutheran church; we have lost so much of what our fathers gave us.

Pastor's comments about "access" are huge. Listening with a side-by-side translation so that you can understand the sonic things that are happening in Bach's treatment of the words are important. Even better if you're able, get a physical copy of the score and watch how the music plays on the page. Ascending lines for rising language and low notes for words like "grave." If you've never listened to this work before, you'll be surprised how much of the chorals you recognize. Credit Bach, our Lutheran ancestor, for preserving these chorals and other teaching music of other church fathers for us. What a treasure Bach has created!

Seems like Bach was both a theologian and a musician.👏 His music speaks to the human experience regardless of language or time period or musical knowledge. I'm not musical at all, but I went to a performance of the St John passion last weekend and it brought tears to my eyes. It's the gospel😭❤️

I am a cello player who spent some time with a teacher who sort of specialized in Bach’s work. Played for the NetherlandsBach society. He was a very good teacher. I only recently learned that Bach was Lutheran. His music is some of my favorite! I love this video you’ve made!

Well, you have a gift my friend. I haven’t even listened to it yet, and my eyes are seeping tears of joy in its anticipation because you have already put the gospel so well. Thank you, brother!

Beautiful commentary, Pr. Wolfmueller. Thank you for teaching us to be active listeners and participants with JS Bach. Thank you for the insight of the chorus playing the part of the unbelieving crowd and also the believing church who responds to the Word with the Lutheran chorales. That was never before pointed out to me and I firmly believe you are right on that.

Pastor, thank you. I was so blessed to hear the Passion the night before you went. I only wish I’d heard your response BEFORE!!! But now I am catching up! The Moments with Bach guys are a wonderful guide to the power of Bach’s music to express the words!!! And you have opened my heart to the “silent yes” aria. It is now my Good Friday prayer, along with the beautiful chorus and ending chorale! Thanking God for Bach … and for you helping me gain access to the beauty of his genius in expressing the Word of God through music, the window to our souls.

Been listening to the Passions for many years so much to learn. A barrier for people will be the German and the patience to sit and listen for two hours. St. Matthew’s is longer. Now imagine this part one sung then an hour long sermon then part two this how it was performed on Good Friday in Bach’s time.

In a couple of weeks I'll be attending a live performance of the St John Passion in a beautiful space with amazing musicians, and I've been trying to prepare myself. A couple of years ago I made the decision to listen to ALL of Bach's extant music, and while listening through it, the St John Passion was the one piece that stood out above all others as the most intriguing. I've always loved how Bach integrated his music with the biblical themes and texts, and I certainly appreciate your comments here about how that works in this particular piece.

The cello solo after Jesus dies was beautiful. Thank you form sharing. It will take many years of listening for this to become an old friend, like Handel's Messiah.

Listen to a recording by the Bach Collegium of Japan. It is indeed a masterful piece that proclaims our Lord & Master Jesus Christ. The use of hymn tunes is incredible. The last stanza of Lord, Thee I Love...my favorite stanza of my favorite hymn.

Biblical seals are an interesting subject, especially the fourth seal (Rev. 6:7~8). For I met a pale horse with claim that Death is an effect and not a cause. So when does an effect ever lead or proceed the causes unless in its Heart can only be found the Will to Live? Bryan, is the figure of Death in this seal a reference to the Archangel Michael?

Just watched it half way through. I think the only thing missing to make it better would have been in Germany to see it.
