Kudos fellow troublemaker. I am doing two 'controversial' things while watching, crocheting socks (ewww!) with indie hand dyed yarn no less! The horror! 😂 Keep up the good work and enjoy your crafting!
How dare you!!! LOL!!! It does just sound so moronic doesn't it...?! I really wish I liked the feeling on my feet for crocheted socks. There are some new patterns that are just so cool!!!
GO CARRIE!!! Thank you! I can only crochet and I've told that I'm ridiculous for spending money on "good yarn". I started second guessing myself. But now, I'm quite content spending MY good money on GOOD yarn. Personally, I think most yarn on good. And SHAME ON ANYONE who tries to tell people how they should use their God given talent. 22:59
What a great video. So good I watched it twice. I agree with you, make what makes you happy. I use a lot of red heart for donations, it the only yarn I can find in many colours up here in Canada. But on the other hand I’m making a memory blanket in had died fingering yarn that I’m loving.
I started knitting socks in August 2023. Since then, I have never been without a sock on my needles. I find it difficult when people say, "well how many pairs of socks do you need?" I love knitting socks in different styles, colours, patterns and will not stop until I've exhausted all the possibilities (i.e. never). Keep doing what you love.
That is WONDERFUL!!! There is not a thing wrong with it!!! Sock are great! They make great gifts, they are fun sample projects for larger things, they are portable...
I knit and crochet. I believe the yarn tells you what it wants to be, I tried to knit with a yarn cake once, restarted it over and over, it just didn’t work but crocheted a gorgeous shawl with it very quickly. When I started to knit, I got told I should use bulky yarn to get the product quicker, I dislike knitting and crocheting 90% of the time with bulky yarn, I love my fingering weight tho. I hate when people say I don’t knit fast enough, I tell them - I’m new to knitting and I’m enjoying the process, so get lost. Never let people tell you how to craft, whether they craft or not. It’s to be enjoyed and not turned into a chore.
I have gotten stuck on projects before because I was forcing it to be something it didn't want to be. OH!!! I need to talk about "fast knitting/crochet"!!! Just an FYI, I like fast hooks and needles because I naturally knit and crochet quickly. Fast doesn't mean better.
My motto is if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. People are rude and judgmental and I say prayers for those people every night. You keep doing you. You are amazing and inspiring.
I do prefer a natural fiber for many reasons. I love the fact that wool doesn't disappoint me by stretching out of shape but i need acrylic for donations.
I bought a acrylic jumper and after one wash it was awful. That's what made me start making my own jumpers. So I'm very careful about using wool etc for that reason. Just got burnt I guess. Also I think our acrylic in the UK is much worse quality then whats in the US. Plus I think our wool is cheaper here
Woo hoo, you go girl, I crochet with everything from thread to blanket yarn and I use hand dyed to super saver, our choice on what works for what project we are doing , keep doing you and what works for you 😊
You have every right to be “hot”. It’s your beautiful yarn and if you made something you enjoyed crocheting and love having is in no way wasteful! There’s always some one that enjoys being hateful!! You have always been kind, accepting, and encouraging!! I certainly crochet with “nice” yarn and knit with economical yarn. It’s my money and my yarn and “I’ll do what I please!!!” It’s nobody else’s business!!! 🧶💜♥️💙💛🧶
That is why I was so... I am truthfully more angry for who I was 15 years ago and those who have heard this and don't know how to take it or process it...
Oh, sweetie, it breaks my heart that someone hurt you and basically insulted many people with the comment about the yarn used in your shawl. I just want you to know I really love listening to your content and I love being exposed to things that I never even thought about before. I totally agree with your perspective about yarn and basically, do what makes you happy. It is a very personal journey for everyone. I have learned, through watching your videos and others, to find yarn that is anti-pilling for softness and durability. And buy a treat of "bougie" yarn as you can afford it. And USE it! And, like you say, sales and bargains (and coupons!) can always be found. It disturbs me how much pure nastiness has been directed towards people online. You keep doing you - I really appreciate it! 🥰
It made me so angry at the time and I get heated talking about it now not for how angry I am for me... I know others are hearing these stupid things and believing it! The hate is very sad to me and confusing. This creates such a serotonin and dopamine dump for me... I can't be mean around yarn...
I had to go back & see… show n tell 217, that shawl is beautiful, how could anyone think that was a waste of yarn??? That yarn was born to be that shawl.
RIGHT!!! I mean... I did nothing but follow directions. Cheryl, Nikki and Mignon Crochet really did the bulk of the work between dying the yarn and writing the pattern... But I was rather pleased with myself at the end of the day!
Because you make with all the fibers is one reason why I watch you consistently. I learned to knit first but struggled with finding patterns that used budget yarns as that was what I could afford and find easily in my area. As a crocheter it is nice to see people use the more expensive yarns instead of just budget.
It really is! I think there is so much for everyone to enjoy and how they can enjoy them... I love working with soft, reliable and colorful yarn. If it is budget, great! If it is "bougie" Fantastic!!!
Some people are just... its sad really, but you are happy and that's all that matters. Variety of fibres makes you a well rounded crafter. As a brit, we are not amused by some people's idiocy 😂😂
I am really more hot for others than I am for me. Well, and who I was 15 years ago... I know my shawl is stunning! The dyers did a great job and the pattern is so well designed!!!
I've seen giant crochet animals that look ridiculously life-like. They were made with style craft acrylic. Super cheap poor quality yarn (just my view lol, last time I tried to knit with it was super frustrating), but excellent result. Which goes to show it ain't the tools sometimes, it's the creator ❤️
I love your channel, your energy and messages! Keep making what you like with whatever fiber you like! There will be a group of "you are not a real whatever if you do x" in every hobby, pastime, life choice and it's a skill to ignore them and find your joy in your own life.
Well said!! So many comments but 😶! I don’t knit but I think it’s beautiful. I have no desire to knit but I LOVE hand dyed fingering yarn and I’ve crocheted beautiful shawls with it. Enjoy what you do!! Thanks Carrie!!
Use, make and do what brings you joy. Everyone has an opinion but hasn't learned that doesn't make it right. Celebrate being you and doing what brings you joy🎉. I keep coming back to your videos because you are joyous.
Thank you! I am generically happy, there are topics that will set me off though. I am so hurt and angry for the new crafters who don't know better yet. Those who are feel turned away by the knitting and crochet communities.
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker you are helping new crafters see what crafting is really about! I appreciate you and thank you for taking time to include everyone!
Truer words have never been said. You are spot on. I am an experienced crocheter but never felt crochet was worthy of the "good" yarn. Then I saw a sweater pattern and had to make it. It used the "good" yarn- (hand dyed). It came out beautifully and since then I never looked back. I so wished that I had heard these words in my early crafting years. Thank you for saying what needs to be said. ❤😊
I do too! I still struggle with it because I still see myself as primarily as a crocheter... I really wish that it just wasn't such a hostile environment.
I'm so sorry you had negative comments about your shawl ❤❤ I totally agree with you, crochet and/or knit with what makes you happy. In my early beginnings I started with natural fibers only but learned acrylic has many benefits too. My husband wears hats every day, all year round, and I crocheted lovely wool hats for him and he washed them in the washer repeatedly and ruined them. Eventually I started making acrylic ones and everyone's happy 😊 Love your channel 🌞
The personal dig isn't what bothers me. It is all of the other people who don't know better hearing it and I was that young crocheter thinking I couldn't crochet "good yarn"... Every yarn has a time and place.
Everyone has what they love to do and it changes over the years. I was just a crocheter for many years then learned to knit and then started dyeing yarn. And now I found my love of knitting socks from hand dyed yarn. I still crochet from time to time but not as often as I did. When I do it is most always out of hand dyed yarn but it certainly depends on the project. The crocheted projects I use hand dyed yarn almost always turn out more beautiful in my opinion. 😅
BTW, you Party Popper yarn is soooooooooooo pretty!!! I love crocheting with hand dyed! I want my crochet to be just as yummy as my knits. When I first learned to knit, I did way more knitting than crochet. I have finally swung back to more 50/50.
@HappyCraftyHomemaker well thank you! 😊 I love that one too! I am dyeing up new fun Halloween colorways right now and I'm getting so excited to be releasing them in a few weeks! ❤️
I have the exact same attitude about amis... Even though I HAD to have the Creatures of Myth and Legend ami book (the one with that gorgeous dragon on the front cover), I still have exactly ZERO desire to actually MAKE one... Ditto being 'fashionable' as opposed to enjoying oneself. Never stop being you, Carrie. We would miss you far too much. 🐞
Thank you! There have been ami's I just really want to make, but it will NEVER be my bread and butter. I just don't like them like that. I love seeing them, I love everyone else's love of them and the patterns that are coming out in the last 5 years are beyond amazing!!!
I am fairly new to crochet and a “friend” and I went to a yarn shop. I had found an easy pattern for a shawl and she told me I could not use hand dyed yarn to crochet the shawl. She said you don’t need to buy everything expensive. She embarrassed me so badly in the store berating me, discussing money and downgrading my skills. I left the store angry, upset and wondering if I did have the skills. Then I found your channel, ALC Yarn and Hypnotic yarn and I crocheted the shawl and yes I made mistakes and frogged it more than once. That was the beginning of the end for our friendship and if finally died in March. Thank you for bringing this subject up. Your shawl was gorgeous!
That is a quick way to get booted from my life. There are a number of things I would like to say to that person... I heard it all and that it really does hurt and that is why it makes me so hot. I am not mad for me. I am mad for anyone who doesn't know better being told they are worth the good yarn!
I agree about yarn weight and fibers. When asked about fiber and weight I tell them it depends on each project. I was amazed at the beautiful sweater I saw someone making with an acrylic wool blend.
I don't know how I missed you getting corn duck! But I love him! I agree with you about making what makes you happy I struggle with in the round ami (the ragdoll/cuddler in 2 panels I love) so If I want one I will gladly pay someone else to make it.
As a left to right knitter ppl take great sometimes salivating condescending joy in telling me I knit “wrong”. Like this thing I do that brings me joy in life that I’ve figured all the little peccadilloes to make it work correctly could ever be “wrong”…I pretty much decided they can live in their black n white square box world if they like. I’ll do what brings me joy. I also crochet left handed, I use what’s at hand, what looks and feels good to me and had to stop listening to others except for bare basics and general how to’s. Deconstructing and figuring work arounds ‘r’ us lol. I get hot too about any looking down at!
I need to talk about that one too... Consistancy is the key, not how you move the hook and needle. I get called on yarn under vs yarn over all the time in crochet tutorials.
The extreme points of view, in any category, always end up mirroring each other! Is what type of yarn, how and when you use it etc, really anyone else's business? I agree with everything you say and if these people don't have anything useful or interesting to say, they should just keep their trap shut! The rest of us don't need them in our lives. Keep going girl!
Without belaboring any of the points you made, let me just sat I stand behind you on all the points you made about snobbery and yarn shaming at both ends of the spectrum. Crafting should bring joy and fulfillment. That looks different to every crafter. No one should force their preferences and opinions on otherwise happy crafters. I'm behind you 100%, that shawl is a masterpiece and I'm sorry anyone tried to take the wind our of your sails, then or ever, with your creations.
I love using hand dyed when crocheting. I just made a gorgeous crochet shawl using an advent from Emma's yarn. Right now i am making a knit scrapghan using hand dyed fingering leftovers. I use budget yarns too but i love experimenting with patterns and yarns. Somethimes i just make something mindless to relax and i just pick crochet or knit based on mood and i pick the yarn that speaks to me at the time. I really could care less what anyone else thinks about what i use. It is my relaxation.
Thank you! ❤ I have one arm. Housefire when I was a baby necessitated amputation of my right arm at the shoulder. So, that's two strikes against me: one-handed AND lefthanded! I taught myself to needle knit when I was 15. I can do it, but I'm frustratingly slow and tire quickly. I also look super weird doing it, holding one needle between my knees and the yarn and other needle in my hand. I found loom knitting about 20 years ago. So much easier for me. BUUUUUT... when I mentioned I'm a loom knitter at an LYS several years ago, the women at the shop said they didn't think I should be buying their yarn because a real knitter might need it. Excuse me, what? Loom knitting is "real" knitting! So, I told the story on a FB group I was a member of back then. Drumroll? A majority of the other members agreed with the LYS! I was so embarrassed and heartbroken. These days, I very rarely specify beyond simply saying, "I'm a knitter." You know what, though? Heck with that. I can needle knit. I am learning to crochet (fun fact - crochet is harder than needle knitting for me.) And I AM A LOOM KNITTER! Aaaand I'm lefthanded and all kindsa backward. Sorry not sorry. 😤
Loom Knitting is real knitting!!! There are MEGA awesome looms for socks too!!! Looming has come a LONG way in the last 5 years! Have you every watched Erica the Lopsided Crafter. She used to do a lot of looming and still reviews new looms!!!
I just want to say thank you for addressing some of these things. Specifically the yarn snobbery issues that occur. I am exclusively a crocheter. I'm trying to learn to knit but just haven't made a lot of progress, and I have some beautiful hand dyed yarns that I just...feel bad about using for crochet. And I shouldn't. Crochet is beautiful and just as valid as knitting and its just nice sometimes to hear that from someone who has a platform.
You really shouldn't. I hate that you have felt that way and I really wanted to share not because I feel bad. It makes me angry when people talk like crochet isn't worthy of the good yarn. It makes me angry for those who don't know better and who I was 15 years ago.
It is all hatred... I am not sure it is even always tied to an "-ism" but it is super harmful to the fiber community. Preference is fine, there are things that do things better than others; but to be hateful because it isn't your choice is just... 😲😡🤬
I don't know how to knit - I crochet. I use anything from silk thread to acrylic worsted. I have the pattern for the summer freshness shawl - I'm still deciding between using a Whirl or some of my hand dyed. I do admire amigurumi - but after two failed attempts (my snake was incredibly lumpy), I don't try it any more. I love making blankets and have found many designers who have released patterns for blankets made from fingering yarn - love the light weight yet warm blankets. Don't let the narrow minded and uneducated spoil the things you love.
Issues like you addressed are one of the reasons I couldn't have a vlog. I'd spend way too much mental energy giving the haters hell. You always handle things very well and maintain your dignity. I'm proud of you for it because I know it cant be easy. I wish I could make the things you make and "see" combinations like you do. Please don't let those keyboard "experts" run you off, unless you need to leave for your mental well-being. Hugs Carrie.
It normally doesn't bother me for me. I know others are hearing these same things, many who don't know better... They need to hear this! I was peeved over my shawl though, because it is so pretty!!!
Hey Carrie, funny thing I just posted a video with plans to use my yarnables for baby items. I had plans to that for awhile. I also am going to use an acrylic for contrast color. Tell me if you think that's not a good idea. It is superwash merino. I will hear your advice, but I probably will do it anyways. 😊
Well said!! I love my afghans that I have made over the last three years using superwash merino wool! I would hate if I let the fiber world tell me how wrong it was to make them...and yes they are all crochet and were not cheap to make. ( i used a subscription afghan club). I say let people do what brings them joy. I do because life is too short. Hugs!!! BTW I know you getting the information out about what made you angry made you feel better.
It made me angry, but really as I am replying to comments, I am really seeing the reason it makes me so mad isn't for me. I know my Summer Freshness Shawl is one of the pretties things I have ever made. But others are seeing these same things, they don't know better, they don't know who and how to listen to these kinds of comments. I am more angry for them and who I was when I was just learning.
Some ppl just suck... Pay them no mind, they don't know what they're talking about and should take a long walk off a very short pier (as my mother would have said...). Whatever yarn you have will be whatever it is meant to be, if you are actually 'listening' to what it's saying. Have a great day. 🐞
I would like to make a comment here. I crochet. I started on red heart super saver. In the 30 years since I taught myself to crochet, I keep finding that I have more to learn. There is always more to learn. I have used mostly acrylic because of cost. And hey, the color choices can be amazing. I am in process of changing my yarn hoard (it is a true hoard) to cotton & wools. That's because I'm learning about frequencies (as in hz) in sound and fibers. That's my changing preference. I see pros & cons in fiber choice & rather you knit or crochet. Crochet uses more yarn. Knit uses less & can be more in stretch. Knit snobbery over crochet has been centuries in the making. I like & appreciate both. It's just that crochet was begun by poorer people in history. I do like to point out, only when someone's being snobby about Knit over Crochet, that knitting may have a more elegant history, but it can be done by a machine. There is no machine that can make all the intricate stitches of crochet. Of course, I don't think crochet can make socks as awesome as Knit. Hope I was civil & didn't go on too long.
You were 100% civil. It is something that makes me hot under the collar and I have to check my words a lot. I think there is a place where each things might work the best, but it doesn't mean that nothing else will work...
Long live Corn Duck! I would buy amigurumi ad well. They're not my jam as far as crafting goes. Sewing small pieces would be endless frustration. I'm glad others make them well so I don't have to. Crafters should support one another when they can.
I'm primarily a knitter. In the past knitting was seen as a practical thing, which crochet was the pretty ornate thing. So the fact that there are folk out there who think crochet isn't worth nice yarn is kinda crazy to me. Cus it's like the reverse of how folk saw it in the past. I used natural fibre exclusively for environmental reasons. But I don't judge folk using acrylic. It's my own personal choice. I ask folk to respect it and I will respect other people's choices too. Like I'm vegetarian, but I don't care if anyone else is.
I am an omnivore, but if you had dinner at my house, I would make it veggie for you... It isn't the end of the world... I will never understand the hate vs support.
I don't knit. I tried, but it just didn't work for me. I crochet though, a fair bit. And I'll be damned if anyone tries to tell me that I shouldn't use "good" yarn for crochet. Crochet is a beautiful art and is worthy of the good yarn, same as knit. The attitude that Knit is better than Crochet is very frustrating and I hate it so much. As if I am inferior because I only crochet and don't knit. I refuse to accept that attitude also. I don't blame you for getting heated, I agree with you 100%.
I'm new to your group and channel. I've only been crocheting 2 and half yrs. Jen over at Cinnamon Stitches is going through the same garbage. I don't knit. I'm HIGHLY allergic to wool, both my son's are allergic to wool, so we're a wool free house. I wont take the risk with my daughter. But trust me there are days I get the FOMO and want to try those yarns, but my husband has to remind me 'is it worth the hives'. Like I cant use RHSS, my husband will stand there in the store and say 'is it worth your hands breaking out and bleeding again??'. Know what gets really under my skin??? When fans/viewers pressure the content creator into re-creating something they made just for them. Like the creator cant have something just for themselves.
You are killing it for only 2.5 years!!!! Jen is going through a lot right now. It is really hard as a content creator to always have to feel like you HAVE to make a pattern or tutorial for EVERYTHING... It isn't my forte, but it is so hit or miss if anyone watches the video after the effort of making it after having it demanded...
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker thank you, I appreciate it. My mom tried for years to teach me how to crochet. Always ended in me crying and her frustrated. when I said I'm over letting this defeat me it was pretty easy for the most part to figure out. I cant read patterns, so youtube has been amazing. My mom is super proud of me.
you are right . and not everyone comes form the same background . Meaning you don't know what someone going thow with there money. and you something might not be a " nice or expensive yarn for you " but to someone else it might be there omg nice and expensive yarn and by saying something mean doesn't left anyone up on how there doing on there crafts but puts them down and sad on what they have .
There was time when my goal was to just be able to afford Lion Brand Yarn. It was my dream yarn. Even now, I still think it is beautiful and I love working with many of their yarns!! There is a wide spectrum and the negative snobbery/anti snobbery is really harmful for crafters and the community.
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker you right it reminded me of when people want be mean just because someone has as a disability. which this craft helps with a lot people with all different disabilities and not all you can see . so really people need to Rember when we were kids and learned form our mothers if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all
It is just amazing to me the amount of judgement that goes around this world! If you are not doing the same things (and in the same ways) as others, then they are told they are wrong. I see it all the time with other hobbies and interests, too. People are condemned for not always agreeing with others. It’s ok to like to work with different fibres, colors, patterns, textures than others. Shoot! If someone wants to make a beautiful dish rag out of Pima cotton, more power to ‘em! It’s not the choice I’d make, but I’d never tell them they are wrong. So silly to me that we can’t just celebrate others’ achievements and makes. People have forgotten the age old saying: If you don’t hand anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all! Also, I couldn’t agree more, we do this because it makes us happy. We should be making what makes US happy. Period.
I just really can't care enough anymore like that. I just will never get it, but I know I am not the problem (this time LOL!). I ain't got time for Hater-Aid personally. It does make me so sad to see how it has harmed so many crafters though.
These folks would really flip their wigs if they see what I've been doing with my hand dyed yarns lol Just saying, I've been granny square and hexi-blanket obsessed lately..... and yes, I can knit, but it's what I wanted to do with it, and it's my yarn....
RE the 'in' patterns...with the very occasional exception (cough, my Musselburgh obsession is going strong, cough) I often find seeing a pattern become 'over saturated' in the market or get highly popular, is often a turn off for me personally 😅. Like no shade, and I love the ones I've seen, but I'm extremely unlikely to ever make a Ranunculus Sweater (24,000+ projects on Ravelry👀) because I feel I don't need to. I've seen every other RUclipsr make one already. Same with the Emotional Support Chicken, they're very cute don't get me wrong, but I'm good😂
I am not saying there isn't a reason some patterns are knit a lot... (I may also be knitting a Musselburgh) but if you don't like it... Don't make it! I don't mind the Ranunculus Sweater, but it really hasn't called to me.
What business is it if anyone’s what yarn you use for what project?! I can’t imagine telling someone they shouldn’t use ___ bc it’s “cheap” or “too good” for a project.
Wow😮. I'm sorry this is still an issue for our community. You are telling it like it is! Your yarn, your choice! My Gran was on a fixed income and only used acrylic for all the sweaters she made. I still have many of her creations. I still wear many of them (some no longer fit because I'm not 12 anymore). I was in a knitting/crochet group and hit the snob wall with a couple of the members. They had the money to spend on malabrigo and couldn't understand any reason to be excited about a great price on acrylic yarns. Their loss! I didn't tell them wool wasn't worth it. They didn't say acrylic wasn't worth it. Though you could see their lack of enthusiasm for my great deal on acrylic. Don't let others ruin what you choose. I have a little stash of superwash and I'm trying to find the right pattern for it. That being said, if I find a crochet pattern that might work for it, that will be what I use it for. My knitting skills are very limited so that is my reason for my decision and I'm sticking to it. Everyone has a different fiber journey they are on. And! I agree that only making what is popular can kill your creativity. I'm almost always off trend. I can't help it. I follow what grabs my attention and my list of makes is very full. It makes me happy😊. If it doesn't make me happy then it has to wait until it grabs me. Everyone, enjoy what you do and all the materials involved. That will fuel your fire more than anything else.
I literally laughed when you said people said you wasted your yarn, that is utterly ridiculous. I have been crocheting for 41 years now and knitting for 20 years and until recently I always used acrylic yarn. it was not til 2 years ago when I started spinning my own yarn that I started using other fibers and gaining an appreciation for the better fibers and the process and only this last year buying nicer yarns. That being said I still use acrylic for many things. Also "ART" is in the eye of the beholder and if you love it and think it is beautiful then that is all that matters. I am going to go look for that video now. I had a comment on a recent video using the Red Heart Granny Square where someone said it didn't work for me because I don't like purple and I was bias...WHAT!...I mean does that even make sense? My son told me that I need to ignore the few negative comments, it is all the good comments that matter. You have a lot of subscribers that obviously enjoy your videos and if someone doesn't then they can go somewhere else. We are not here to make them happy, we are here doing what makes US happy and if people enjoy what makes us happy then that is amazing. You could have made the duck but it is nice to support other makers. I have people say that to me too. I make some of my own project bags but I still like to buy ones from other makers.
I can sew... but I don't have the treasure trove of fabric I buy... LOL!!! I love supporting other makers! I can't wait to see what I come home with in August!!
@@HappyCraftyHomemakeralso, and I know not everyone goes for them, but Granny squares for daaaays...I have the pattern memorised, I havr fallen asleep making them😂😅no thinking involved you can zone out to your hearts content and eventually you can make a blanket, a hoodie...tops...whatever
Everyone should do what works for them. If they can't say something nice don't say it at all. I made a blanket for a friend of mine over 40 years ago. I think it was Sayelle yarn. She still has it. It's used and washed all the time and it's still fine. That speaks for cheap acrylic yarn. It lasts for ever. She still talks about that blanket how great it is. Her mother in law made many blankets. I don't know what yarn it was but they all fell apart and were eventually tossed out. I think it may have been the way she tied ends. My guess is they were knotted not woven. Personally I'm retired on a fixed income. I would love to try high quality yarn but I can't afford it. It's more important to have as people in our fiber arts as we can. If they use expensive or big box yarn it doesn't matter. This is a dying art and we need to encourage not discourage others.
High quality isn't always expensive. Please don't think you aren't using quality if you aren't buying expensive. There are quality yarns at every price point.
People!!! Unless you are buying my yarn, I have promised you something with said yarn, and then used it differently.... mind your business! Didn't ask your opinion and didn't use your money. I don't understand money being spent on fancy cups or designer dogs; but if that makes you happy and I'm not paying for it; do what you want. Gotta love keyboard warriors
Mad you used yarn you bought in a project you love. 🤦♀️ Yikes. Grow up yarn snobs. We had a new knitter join our group whose son brought her back some wools from his overseas trip. So she was a huge yarn snob, putting down cottons and acrylics, but in the most innocent of fashions. We all grinned and bore it till she ran out of yarn (6 months) and she came down to earth as she had to buy her own yarn. Once she had we all helped her out by pointing out thrift store finds and KP for budget wools when she wanted something ‘nicer.’
Putting down cotton's in particular I will never understand. Wool isn't really that condusive to summer knits. I mean you can, but personally I'd prefer my summer T-shirt out of cotton lol. Or linen. I've used a few really nice linen yarns. Fun fact when linen is mixed with cotton is kinda looses some of its creasing properties and behaves a bit better. So I like using cotton/linen blends
The LYS in my home town was not only knit only but elitist. Turn me off knitting at an early age when all I wanted to do was expand my yarn knowledge. I was 10 and my grandmother bought all her fingering wool for afghans there. Bet she didn't tell them. 😅
I had to refilm so many times because I kept getting so hot talking about the Summer Freshness Shawl comments... I didn't want to tangent, but I wanted to talk about these points. I keep a running list on the side for just combining into these kinds of videos.
Love your inspiration no matter what project and yarn you choose to use… Thank you.. ❤
Thank you!!
Thank you!!! Doesn't that just sound stupid?! When you think about what they said... It just sounds stupid...
What a great video. So good I watched it twice. I agree with you, make what makes you happy. I use a lot of red heart for donations, it the only yarn I can find in many colours up here in Canada. But on the other hand I’m making a memory blanket in had died fingering yarn that I’m loving.
I think it is brilliant!!! There is no reason we can't use anything in general...
I agree! Love my sock knitting. Crochet and Knit what makes you happy with whatever yarn you want! 🥰
Also Cornduck is adorable ❤
Isn't he! I really wish the maker would ID herself on here. He makes me so happy every time I see him!
My mommy taught me the same thing. She wasn't the "best" conventional mom, but she loved me enough to teach me that!!!
I do prefer a natural fiber for many reasons. I love the fact that wool doesn't disappoint me by stretching out of shape but i need acrylic for donations.
Use what you like and for what you like! Everything has a use!
I bought a acrylic jumper and after one wash it was awful. That's what made me start making my own jumpers. So I'm very careful about using wool etc for that reason. Just got burnt I guess. Also I think our acrylic in the UK is much worse quality then whats in the US. Plus I think our wool is cheaper here
Woo hoo, you go girl, I crochet with everything from thread to blanket yarn and I use hand dyed to super saver, our choice on what works for what project we are doing , keep doing you and what works for you 😊
RIGHT!!!
Carrie you are so right I use whatever yarn to do my make I don’t care what it is as long as I like it
AMEN!!
@HappyCraftyHomemaker Exactly! It's our happy place!! 💜
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker as you should be, it was stunning. You made it with your hands selecting beautiful yarns.
Side note, I feel so validated cus I also don't enjoy making aragumi lol 🤣 I will happily pay someone else to do it ❤️
Because you make with all the fibers is one reason why I watch you consistently.
Queen Victoria was a crocheter , your shawl is beautiful, you are beautiful. ❤❤ I'll knit or crochet with what I want ❤❤
Thank you!!! I just was a bit shocked by the "waste" comment... That was rough and so absurd to me...
Some people are just... its sad really, but you are happy and that's all that matters. Variety of fibres makes you a well rounded crafter. As a brit, we are not amused by some people's idiocy 😂😂
I'm so sorry this has happened 😢. Use whatever yarn that makes you happy. Your shawl is beautiful.
I am really more hot for others than I am for me. Well, and who I was 15 years ago... I know my shawl is stunning! The dyers did a great job and the pattern is so well designed!!!
There is a crocheted gown at the Smithsonian. A work of art. Museum quality. Let's not even mention the splendid art of Irish Crochet.
There are so many beautiful pieces that have been made that are heirloom quality and meant to last forever.
Oh thank you! I don't let it really get to me personally, but there are moments...
Well said!! So many comments but 😶! I don’t knit but I think it’s beautiful. I have no desire to knit but I LOVE hand dyed fingering yarn and I’ve crocheted beautiful shawls with it. Enjoy what you do!! Thanks Carrie!!
Most are crochetable, you might have to chose a pattern that will work best... But you have to do the same thing with knitting...
accidentally found this great and truthful content
Welcome!! There are a few other videos like this in the playlist. Crafty Chats are kind of a little of everything.
Agree. Crochet looks stunning in a pretty verigated yarn. I'm less keen on the colourpooling that happens in verigated knitwear
I love to crochet with my hand dyed yarns .
Me too!!!
Well said Carrie all your garments and shawls and blankets are stunning and very well said
You are so sweet!
“Amen, hallelujah, where’s the Tylenol” sorry, couldn’t resist a movie quote. All very well said 👏🏻
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Big hugs from Canada. Your shawls are beautiful - craft them how you want to!
Thank you!!!
I knit and crochet. Thank you for saying this!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome! It is hard sometimes...
You go girl! I've got your back. I've poo-pooed, those folks. Have even lost a couple friends over I'll do it my way.
Thank you!!!
I agree about yarn weight and fibers. When asked about fiber and weight I tell them it depends on each project. I was amazed at the beautiful sweater I saw someone making with an acrylic wool blend.
I personally prefer blends for sweaters. Each fiber type offers something different.
I've always thought it was silly to try and tell others what they should make or the types of yarn to be used in a project.
RIGHT?!
I don't know how I missed you getting corn duck! But I love him! I agree with you about making what makes you happy I struggle with in the round ami (the ragdoll/cuddler in 2 panels I love) so If I want one I will gladly pay someone else to make it.
Isn't he just the cutest little cutie that ever cutied?! There are times I just want to or have to have the FO, but that is so rare...
I knit English style, so I feel your pain. The amount of people having a go at me for that is unreal
I need to talk about that one too... Consistancy is the key, not how you move the hook and needle. I get called on yarn under vs yarn over all the time in crochet tutorials.
LOL! I would just say; "I can purl all day my way!" LOL!!! I use English style for colorwork. There is nothing wrong with it at all!!!
They do!! I am not really worried about myself, but I think others need to hear my reaction to these points.
I just finished a granny vest using hand dyed and ordered some yarn art cake that I plan on using next I love them both
100%!!!
Carrie, i don't knit but i learn a lot from you when you're knitting.
There is so much cross over information!!!
Louder for the people in the back!! 🎤🔊 Spread kindness!!! Stomp out hate!
Amen!!
It is our yarn, we bought it... If we like the projects, shouldn't we just do what we want?
Thank you very great takes on our hobby!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! ❤
I have one arm.
Comments like that...😬😬😬
It feels like an extension of classism and other ism's I don't need to mention 😢❤❤❤
I agree 100%!! I have just started using the same "good yarn" I knit with to crochet with in the last 5 years. It just seemed so crazy to not use it!!
Hey Carrie! I understand completely what you are talking about! Justice for Corn Duck! 🌽🦆
VIVA Corn Duck!!
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker it's very pretty and I wonder how many of the hateful things stem from jealousy too. It's just a shame.
There is nothing wrong with doing it. The care for it is going to have to be based on the most delicate (merino) so it holds up longer.
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker I appreciate you and your channel. Thank you, huge hugs :)
I agree!!
Thank you!!!
I hate granny squares!!!!!! 😂
LOL!!! Nothing wrong with that!
Honestly. When they're thrown into a cardigan or a jumper etc same.
Amen!
Thank you!!
❤❤❤❤❤
👋🧶💖🧶👋
For me it doesn't bother me a lot... Normally I just roll my eyes and move on. It is important for the community though.
Agreed
Thank you!!!
Long live Corn Duck! I would buy amigurumi ad well. They're not my jam as far as crafting goes. Sewing small pieces would be endless frustration. I'm glad others make them well so I don't have to. Crafters should support one another when they can.
I agree!!!
Only thing that does annoy me. Is when folk try to claim their weird acrylic brand is "environmentally friendly". That kinda drives me bonkers.
I am an omnivore, but if you had dinner at my house, I would make it veggie for you... It isn't the end of the world... I will never understand the hate vs support.
I will get more into it in a future video. But there are processed synthetics that are better than others.
There is just reason for it! Are you jealous I can make lace easier than you? Because intricate knit lace... one mistake and you up the creek...
Your beautiful Easter shawl?!?? I was upset you didn't get to wear it for Easter
This year's shawl, yeah...
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker Exactly. Good for you for letting it roll off your shoulders. It just mostly makes me shake my head.
I thought those two yarn subscriptions were hand dyed with crocheters in mind.
ALC is, Yarnable isn't focused on crochet, but is 100% crochetable as I showed in the actual 3 month review.
@HappyCraftyHomemaker the shawl you made with this yarn is absolutely gorgeous. I went back and watched episode 217 again.
These folks would really flip their wigs if they see what I've been doing with my hand dyed yarns lol Just saying, I've been granny square and hexi-blanket obsessed lately..... and yes, I can knit, but it's what I wanted to do with it, and it's my yarn....
LOL!!! RIGHT!!! It really isn't that serious!
You go Heather 😂 love you ❤

@@HappyCraftyHomemaker ❤️❤️❤️
What business is it if anyone’s what yarn you use for what project?! I can’t imagine telling someone they shouldn’t use ___ bc it’s “cheap” or “too good” for a project.
I mean, I just keep thinking over and over... "How stupid!" It really does just sound ignorant!
Why hate on another's joy...
@@HappyCraftyHomemaker I just did our local yarn hop and came home with WAY too much 😅. I think doing a video makes me want to buy more 🤭

The sad thing... it is in person and face to face too... There are a lot of crocheters who just aren't welcome at LYSs because they get bullies out.
That is why "anti-snobbery" is just as bad as snobbery...
I have known a few people who get a hit of the good stuff and they lose their minds... LOL!
Amen Carrie! It’s sad that when I walk into most LYS crochet is frowned upon 🧶💜
It is really sad as a crocheter to feel unwanted at an LYS. Most dyers aren't like that... It really doesn't make sense to me.
The LYS in my home town was not only knit only but elitist. Turn me off knitting at an early age when all I wanted to do was expand my yarn knowledge. I was 10 and my grandmother bought all her fingering wool for afghans there. Bet she didn't tell them. 😅
Oh wow that was a toxic thing to say to anyone about any craft 🫂.
You have 1000% right to be justly pissed.
I had to refilm so many times because I kept getting so hot talking about the Summer Freshness Shawl comments... I didn't want to tangent, but I wanted to talk about these points. I keep a running list on the side for just combining into these kinds of videos.
