Building a Camp in a Thunderstorm | survival shelter, bushcraft, perimeter walls, fire pit

  • Join me as I build an enclosed bushcraft and survival camp in a thunderstorm and heavy rain. I use a bushcraft axe, saw and knife to build perimeter walls by stacking logs and lashing them together. I then use some. of the off-cuts of the giant ash tree to extend the walls. Using as logs I build a fireplace with a spit for a pot hanger setup. I also build a log bench from part of the ash tree. Stay tuned as I build the beds and roof to the shelter soon!

I was wondering when you would start some Bushcraft in your woodland. I know it is not the primary or sole purpose of your purchase of the land, but it is such a part of what your channel is about that I knew it would be part of your woodland life. Thanks for taking us along.

I'm glad you're finally getting a bushcraft camp started, your last one was the reason I subscribed to your channel. I watch everything that you do but the camp building videos are what it is all about. My brother has just purchased a bit of woodlands near me and has asked me to manage it for him. I am going to use so many of the skills that I have learned from you in the months and years to come! I am even considering filming my journey and putting it on youtube thanks to you.

@@wouldulikesomescons I have got a couple of go pro cameras and have started planning things so I am nearly ready to start filming. I am not so sure I could make it as interesting as TA does, he seems to very good at talking to the camera. The woodlands that I am gonna be managing is beautiful though, it has a stream and has a load of dears and other wildlife living there. I am so excited and have so many plans for it. I think if I can get the presenting part down, I could make a really good series. Watch this space!!

@@markjust86 TA is a former teacher, so he's actually studied how to present information to an audience in an interesting and engaging way. So yeah, he's really good at this, haha.
That being said, if you find presenting to camera a challenge, and something you want to get better at - one way to deal with that to some extent is if you can bring a friend/family member with you to film. Put them behind the camera, and then explain what you're doing to that person, rather than the abstract idea of your audience. Tell them to ask follow-up questions if you're being unclear. Easy to be a good host to someone you already like, you know? :-)

Had a thought… for your camp.
With the rain falling and running off your Tarp, why not think about making a water collector. You might be able to make something useful like an organic garden with irrigation from rain water.
You could make a wild food section and a veggie patch or even a tree nursery and re plant the trees.

I just love your pot hangers! I've been making a few of these to use as hangers around the garden. I would suggest a 3 sided lean to if you only plan to use it as a summer camp,, that you can build upon later when it gets cooler for winter. But only if the prevailing winds favor such a layout. Such a plan will give plenty of air flow while it is warm, shade, and modest protection from the wind. Give yourself a bit of an overhang in the front for rain, and elevate the back so you can use your home made bed. And add a wood storage bin to the side.

Edit to add: Aaand a few seconds later, you walk through "hedge lane"...and that shows exactly the kind of roof I was thinking of. Imma gonna watch the rest now, before I discover that you've already built the roof in some way!

Catch them early! It's hard to totally prevent them biting you, but if you see them on you while they are very small, I tend to use tweezers to gently pull them out.

If you're going to build a bed, try using long poles length wise instead of short sticks along the width of the bed. It saves a lot of cutting and sleeps better IMO.

Just wanted to make a suggestion on the wall, how about on the low side of the fallen ash tree use longer logs on the top half of the wall you already built so they would fill in the gap on that side! Enjoyed the video!!
