    That gecko is 10+ grams. Ribs showing is not dehydration but malnourished. Dehydration is loose saggy skin or zig-zag tail. Too much humidity can be an issue just as too little. I recommend buying a digital humidity gauge. If you're ambient is at 50% during the day then only misting every other day is fine. Too much humidity creates an environment for bacteria. The hanging ledges are great but keep in mind that you have to observe your gecko. If they are unable to climb from shedding issues they will not be able to get to the food. All of my hanging ledges are a jump away or have something to climb on to get to them. Hope this helps.

    READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY!!!
    Cresties do require extra heating and UV. Both aid in digestion, organ function, bone health, growth rates and so many more things. Promote best care not just enough to survive! They are cold blooded, they regulate their temperature by moving between warmer and cooler areas. For example when they have eaten they will seek out warmth to aid their digestion and when sleeping seek out cooler areas to minimise energy expenditure. Don’t deprive them of this basic instinctual behaviour. With UV, serum D3 levels in the blood are significantly increased (this suggests that they are deficient when it is not provided). The reason for that is because they have not evolved to absorb supplemental D3 like humans have and so the standard powdered diets do not create the desired outcome. UV will aid in great organ function but more importantly will entirely remove MBD, the most common pathology in captive reptiles. The improved calcium absorption as a result of higher D3 levels means better bone density (so much so you can see the difference with the naked eye in X-rays). This improved calcium absorption allows the gecko to eat more readily and grow faster (as it should) without the risk of poor bone health. The improved calcium intake also prevents the pockets of chalky calcium that build in the mouth. This is incredibly common in cresties and other new cal geckos that don’t get UV. Many people increase D3 supplements to try to combat that but as explained, absorption of dietary D3 is poor and so this is not a solution that works. Appropriate UV and heat such as the Arcadia Shade dweller and Deep Heat Projector are fairly cheap. There is no excuse not to use it. Admittedly a dimmer thermostat (needed in conjunction with a deep heat projector) will cost a bit but i f you’re not prepared to pay for what’s needed to maintain optimum health in your animals, don’t keep them. These things will be far cheaper than a vet visit down the road. The third thing for optimum health is varied diet. Research the diet of wild cresties, their diet is roughly 50/50 between insects and fruit, pollen and seeds. They will eat any insect that crosses them so vary this as much as possible, roaches, isopods, earwigs, crickets, beetles, meal worms, grubs, black soldier fly etc etc. There are tons of feeder insects. Research the nutritional value of each of those feeder insects. Research the fruits and berries they eat, try to replicate that. Add bee pollen as a natural supplement to their diet. It goes on and on but the more varied that diet, the healthier your animal will be. Don’t be lazy and just feed Pangea or whatever other brand of powdered fruit alone. Especially not just one flavour which I see a ton of people do! Research is key, do a ton of it! Oh and lastly try to avoid crestie groups on Facebook. They are an echo chamber of misinformation. There are tons of great groups out there (Advancing Herpetological Husbandry is my favourite). Try to find contrary opinions to any data you find, that alone will set you up for success. People tend to find information that suits them and run with that when it may not be the greatest info. For example a lot of big breeders will give very basic care info and say that their animals are healthy and they’ve been doing it that way for x amount of years. The problem is there’s a conflict of interest. They want to sell as many animals as possible and so will make it sound as easy as they can to make people buy. They tend not to be a good source of info. Anyway, I could go on and on. If you read this far you’re obviously on the right track! Good luck!

    • @fibbintiggins2858
      @fibbintiggins2858 5 лет назад

      Do you have any proof of geckos not being able to absorb D3 through supplements? Cause you made a lot of claims and it would be nice to see some evidence.

    • @yagirlsilverr
      @yagirlsilverr 5 лет назад

      Covering the screen is only really necessary if you live in a dry climate. Its easier to keep humidity up with half to 65% of the screen covered. It won't affect your Gecko's shed as lobg as its not too humid or not enough humid.

    UK market doesn't really charge differently for crested gecko's based on what colours they are, this appears to be mainly an American thing. In the UK you can end up paying a flat amount of £20 for a crested gecko.

      @reptilespecialty 6 лет назад +1

      Crested Geckos are polymorphic. This means that they produce many different colors and patterns. That's part of the fun with these guys. Line breeding helps to consistently reproduce the trait you are looking for. The market in the US understands this and markets their geckos appropriately. The "morphs" are graded as in A, B, and C grade just like tests. A & B are sold to other breeders, and hobbyist. C grade morphs go to pet stores and wholesalers to become pets. This is how the market opperates in the USA.

      Dandroid Does after I handle one gecko, I make sure to wash my hands well. Is not handling for 5 days really that long??

    • @dandroiddoes3531
      @dandroiddoes3531 7 лет назад

      Well I will be honest it really depends on the gecko itself remember there are personality differences and it is possible that 5 days is long to your gecko

      Dandroid Does right, he seems a little stressed. Should I leave him be or should I handle him to let him know that I'm not a threat

    • @dandroiddoes3531
      @dandroiddoes3531 7 лет назад

      Kaito Shiotsu well you can try putting some crested gecko diet on your finger to see if he is willing to eat from you or you can lay your hand in the enclosure and let him got on to your hand on his own as baby steps

    • @meadowfrance

      That's quite a big cage, suitable for an adult or breeding pair, I'd say at least 30 grams before moving into a cage that size.

      if you already have an 18x18x24, it is more than ample for a baby gecko

      Its a bit large, but if its eating then its fine, you could try blocking off part of the cage for a while with some plastic sheet or cardboard.

      You shouldn't keep them together and not too big of an enclosure since it may be hard for them to find their food

    The care for crested geckos, is controversal, some say humidity, heat lamps isnt needed, some say they are, some say just room temp. some say no, so truly, no one really knows the proper care.

    • @spacemanju7
      @spacemanju7 6 лет назад

      damon james they live best at room temp high 70s for daytime and high to mid 60s for nighttime if your house stays at 74 to 78 perfect no extra light is needed but a uvb won't hurt and will help the plants grow if you have real ones a good misting once or twice daily will keep humidity up ans no water bowl is need as the gecko will drink from the droplets of water from misting the tank but once again a water bowl wouldnt hurt I recommend using a bioactive setup which is self sustaining and maintaining the biodude.com has kits for bioactive setups a subadult or juvenile will do good in a ten gallon or a 12x12x18 which is 11 and some change 18x18x24 is good enough for two to three cresties and a 20 for one

    I'm planning to get a juvenile crested gecko soon(from a breeder) . I purchased an Exo-Terra 18x18x24 and have heard from mixed sources that it isn't okay to put them in such a large tank. I've also heard people argue that it's fine as long as you provide enough hiding spots. Thoughts? Considering you've had them for so long I'm really wondering what you think.

      Generally speaking baby reptiles are always more prone to have something go wrong it's just because they are babies, they're more fragile and things like dehydration take them down faster than adults. Just make sure you're doing your stuff right, if you did your research before and are feeding the right food at the right times, switching it out before it goes bad, making sure they have water/humidity, their setup is correct, the temperature isn't too high or low, then you should be fine
