  • In the hockey world , as we’ve previously covered before on the channel there are players who leave a lasting impression with their unique personalities, antics, and undeniable flair. My buddies and I used to golf at Shack's Vaughan Valley Golf Club where Eddie was the co-owner. He'd be out first thing in the morning driving around on his golf cart greeting all of the golfers. His personality was something you just never forgot.
    He was a gem of a person on and off the ice.

    Thank you for making this video. As a little kid watching Leafs games in B&W I'll never forget the crowd chanting "We Want SHACK". The second he stepped on the ice the game changed. He was greased lightning. He put EVERYTHING into every shift. A bundle of energy nobody could contain.
    I can't get over how much Zach Hyman resembles Eddie. Sometimes he plays a bit like Eddie too. Clear the track--here comes ZACH!

    I met Eddie Shack in Toronto. It Must have been the mid-late eighties. He was selling Christmas trees outside of a Grocery store. He was a little pricey but you got a coupon for a round of golf. If you could still find the coupon come spring. Shook his hand and got an autograph. I do remember he had some big hands. Not a pair of mitts you'd want upside your head.

    Met Eddie at a VLT machine as he stole my pack of gum. He was with an Old Timer crew in Winnipeg and just hammered as his chaperons tried leading him out. He was pawing the lady helper who was most uncomfortable and kept brushing Eddie away. Not sure how he was the next day, told us he loved "Clear the Track"

    I didn't see that game. But remember the story and the picture in the Toronto Star. Shack had two players on his back heading for the opposition goal. Then the picture showed Eddie standing there scratching his head looking at two out cold players laying against the boards behind the net. There wasn't a game I don't think that -man didn't get a standing ovation for something lol.

    No, "Clear the Track Here Comes Shack" didn't reach #1 in Canada, but on the CHUM chart in Toronto. The song, co-written by Brian McFarlane, peaked on the national RPM singles chart at #56 on April 4, 1966. Wikipedians and Torontonians can't seem to get it through their thick skulls that there's more to Canada than Toronto, and CHUM wasn't Canada's only radio station.
    The March 7, 1968 duel with Zeidel was televised in both Boston and Philadelphia, but I don't know if any video still exists.
    Shack actually played two years in his return to the Leafs, but his last season, 1974-75, was pretty forgettable, and he spent a few weeks in the minors that year.
    I remember a couple of his commercials, but I can't remember exactly what products he was endorsing. I remember one where he said, "I have a nose for value;" that might have been for Pop Shoppe. There was another, filmed before he grew his moustache, for garbage bags, which ended with him kicking a large plastic garbage bag.
    He visited Edmonton circa 1983 and did a serious interview as a guest of the CFRN TV panel show "Face the Newsmen;" it would be worth seeing again, but I don't think the video exists anymore.

    Mr. Shack certainly wasn't crazy. He was a fine hockey player and had a long career. Not many people had as much fun in life than Eddie. As we know, reading and writing wasn't a strong suit for Eddie. Punch Imlach tells a story about a Leaf/Red Wing game. The Wings players on the bench were riding Eddie saying he was so stupid he couldn't even write. Later in the game, Shack scored. He raced to the Red Wing bench, spraying ice towards the players. Then Eddie spelled out G.O.A.L.

      @MuttzyDogg Месяц назад

      @@RodCalidge all of Howe peers agree that he held the league back for 25 plus years... it's documented its been said. Same for Orr with his garbage agent as well they did more wrong to the sport than good. It's facts. Ppl are just mesmerized due to the marketing that was done to make this guys into legends. There's plenty of names who played alongside Howe no one remembers that might of had more talent and skill than him but weren't playing as rough and tough as he was. Wasn't marketable as much as Howe was. If Mauriche Richard was English he would of been way bigger than life Maurice Richard was the only person able to stop an entire city of being in riot for days.. when campbell suspended richard mtl fans took the streets for hours and days. It literally took The Ricket to tell ppl on radio to go home and stop. Howe didn't have such power. Richard had an entire population of ppl dressing and getting his haircut. If Richard said vote for this or that person ppl would vote for that person. His influence on folks is on another level Howe could only dream of being. He fought for better condition and better pays for his teammates... while Gowe held the league back for 25 plus years in that regards. It's documented all you gotta do is read a book and educate yourself. Howe had an agreement to be the highest paid hockey player. Every year he would cash cheques without looking or questioning the owners. Mean while that meant if he didn't negotiate things stayed the same for everyone. This is way bigger than you might think ppl were giving birth to children have several kids and playing hockey I times where they could of made way more. Matter of fact Howe was so slow... he wasn't even the highest paid player on his team the owners simply made him believe he was... not until one of his teammates told him how much more than Howe he was getting that things changed... that took more than 25 years... meanwhile Richard had already negotiate better conditions better lays... Lindsay started the player association Howe didn't even support him Orr either. Two players ppl praise so much that could of done so much good for the sport sat back and observe their peers suffer and struggle for better conditions and pays. It was the most lucrative Era for owners in all of sports history they were paying their players less than shop workers.. racking millions even back then so that money was worthless so much

    • @danroux4010
      @danroux4010 Месяц назад +2

      Rocket Richard played 978 NHL regular season games scoring 544 goals and 422 assists for a total of 966 points. Howe played 1767 games with 801 goals and 1049 assist for a total of 1850 points. Howe averaged over 1 point per game over in nearly double the number of games Richard played. Howe is Mr Hockey. Richard was more spectacular but Howe was more effective throughout a very long career. This coming from a 65 year old Habs fan. Don't forget that Richard also played on a better team than Howe.
