Pain arc was literally the peak of Naruto. The stakes were extremely high. This dude basically was unbeatable and he had demonstrated that consistently as he mowed down our beloved characters every other episode. We also knew Naruto was training but it still felt such a lopsided fight that makes it extremely compelling to see how he will overcome this. The more the struggle, the more satisfying the end. This arc is how every show should strive to be, albeit anime or not.

Nagato as a child of war has never seen a love, honesty and sincerity. He truly thought no human being can be 100% good and won't betray anyone. That's why the Infinite Tsukuyomi would be the way to peace in his thoughts. He didn't really wanted to be a god at some point. Just wanted to bring a peace from his view. Was betrayed by tobi and madara by not knowing the truth. Nagato is a perfect character for me.

I will never stop headcanoning that Pain was originally intended to be the Final Villain of all of Naruto. His arc is absolutely perfect in every way. Pain is a foil to Naruto, and symbolized the moment when he exceeded both of his teachers (Kakashi and Jiraiya) and became the beloved hero of the village. The rest of it was just trying to patch all the plot holes the Uchiha created... and then whatever the hell Boruto is.
but still, naruto wouldn't be the same without the final act. Madara vs 5000 shinobi, Kakashi vs Obito, Obito backstory, Team 7 reunite, Itachi and Sasuke teaming up vs Kabuto and his last moments+so so many other insane moments, and to top it all, Naruto vs Sasuke, maybe the best fight in anime history.
