Is China leading the electric vehicle race? | BBC News

- China’s aggressive push into overseas markets with its own electric vehicles has sparked a backlash in the US and Europe.
Governments are looking to protect their domestic car makers. An anti-subsidy investigation is wrapping up in the coming weeks and a response from Brussels is expected.
But with annual sales of electric vehicles already above 30% of all cars in China, the mood there remains optimistic.

Westerners complaining that the Chinese are outcompeting them in capitalism. Interesting times we live in.
Anyone reading this checkout Dave Borlace of Just Have a Think for a better perspective on this very topic.
you mean White people
😂🇨🇳📈
Lol
And the fact that China has better free market than the west is so crazy. They've proven their free market system by not banning foreign car brands in China. China didn't ban Apple in response for US banning Huawei etc.
If it was American or any other Western nation the headlines would have been, "American EV makers leads the world with record sales"
😂😂
The British are watching with mixed emotions as China provides the world with high-quality and affordable goods
Tesla was the #1 selling car in the world last year and is the #1 car manufacturer in the world
Because american made cars perform better, duh
Chinese EVs are not inexpensive. It’s the Western car makers that have been excessively profiteering from the car buyers. we’re all conditioned to think cars should cost more than they should.
Here here. We’ve been conditioned into this, when it really doesn’t have to be this way. Sell them like new off brand phones, not houses.
Chinese EVs are complete and utter junk.
Terrible manufacturing, terrible safety standards, terrible craftsmanship.
If you buy that junk you deserve what you get, but your passengers do not.
That and in China they only make around 1300 USD in profit to outcompete among themselves. In Europe they are making around 16K-23K in profit for each car...because like you said, its easier to outprice the competitors that have ridiculous prices.
Problem is that Chinese EVs will kill you, because safety features don't work. Safety actually cost money. I know, it's crazy 😮
Yes, Here in Australia, the like of Kia, Toyota and Mazda has been charging premium prices for car that was typically in the lower end of the market, they have cheap specs with cheapo interiors, now China has came along to take that affordable segment with better spec cars and way nicer interior.
EU and US: developing countries need to take more responsibility to fight climate change.
Also EU and US: Chinese EV and solar panels suffer overproduction 😂

@@fortunateson101I thought China does have YT access? I've seen some Chinese RUclipsrs here lol
@@fortunateson101the point is the West are text book hypocrites. What is the inflation reduction act if not a subsidy in America. Macron wants Europe to do similar. So they have no moral issue with it, they should stop saying they do
@@fortunateson101 I live in China. you're right. most people in China can't use Google or Facebook. I am sure there is a political issue, but I would like to explain that Google used to be able to use Google in China, but later Google did not agree to host servers in China and comply with some relevant Chinese censorship regulations. so Google cannot use it in China. there are some websites that comply with the Chinese rules, and these software and websites can also be used
@@fortunateson101 You are right. China does not have freedom of speech, it is working on to become more free and liberal over time without causing social problems. But the US and its allies are hypocrites that claim they have freedom but in reality, it's all government controlled anyway.
If Electric Car is our future, then "China has made Electric Cars very affordable!" . We all want affordable electric cars right?
Exactly. Our govs are just upset because they’re not themselves getting a slice of the pie. Plain and simple. Really is literally nothing else to it.

That's not the problem, If you observe most of the Renewable tech is pushed by European countries not USA because new investments in europe are in renewable sectors only , Europe don't have anything to offer to the world right now so they think they can sell tech products and license to developing countries but china,India and other developing countries manufactured their own products so this threatens europe especially EU, Also unlike USA most countries in EU and UK don't have their own energy reserves
So you support the idea that wages in the US should match china’s? “As of February 19, 2024, Shanghai has the highest monthly minimum wage among 31 provinces (RMB 2,690/US$370 per month), and Beijing has the highest hourly minimum wage (RMB 26.4/US$3.7 per hour).”

BBC as usual didn't mention the subsidies by EU as a balanced argument, don't expect them to have a un-bias coverage of anything China. In that sense I think DW does a way better job.
Bbc is trying to make its viewers idiots.
The BBC also did not mention that China is subsidizing all EV companies, including Tesla in Shanghai, while the U.S. is only subsidizing its own brands.
It must be clarified to our Western friends that the Chinese government has long ended its subsidies to car companies. Currently, it is only reducing commodity taxes for consumers. Chinese car companies are engaging in liberalized market competition.
Unfair Advantage is not a legitimate criticism. Amazon has an unfair advantage in e-commerce and Google has an unfair advantage in search.

Nio has the most charging piles in China and they never received any subsidies. They were bailed out once but needed to give up a piece of the company to the government which they’ve been buying back by repaying the loan. Nio has never received subsidies so it’s infuriating this is what the u.s and e.u are saying because they were late to the party and can’t compete. Why is this even a question? You now can say evs are evil, that will make you feel better.
Isn't the US heavily subsidising its own EV industry with its inflation reductions act??? If I recall only US made EVs can obtain government credit worth 7k USD, surely that runs blatantly against WTO rules, no?
Longest time Europe and America was crying on gasoline combustion engines.😂😂
Remember when desktop PC prices were very high since they were manufactured in the US? After the components get made in China, the computers became more affordable. Similar thing would likely happen to EV industry
The prices were not high because they were in the US. The only reason they existed at all is because the US invented them. China can only steal technology and we are starting to block that more and more.

There were some subsidies in the early years of EV development in China, but all the car companies competing in Chinese market enjoyed the same subsidies, including Tasla and many other companies from Germany and Japan! For example, if customer buys an EV(no matter it is from China or abroad), customer can get a 10% discount(means government will pay the 10% for customer). But such kind of subsidies were long gone!

It's a strange argument, the western governments are complaining that the Chinese government is subsidising EV companies. If that's the case it means the Chinese government is partly paying for the cars that westerners and buying, but yet are still complaining. If the Chinese government is partly paying for my car, I would gladly accept. The other point is, all governments across the world, not just China, supports their car companies in some way, it is just another western hypocrisy to call out China for this.
In another words they can't compete with the Chinese. 😂
BYD has almost total vertical supply chain integration. That's why they can sell their cars way cheaper than anyone else. Subsidies, if anything, makes them more on equal footing with domestic brands after factoring tariffs. The west needs to face the fact that they can not compete in mass production and that it's only hope to remain competitive in a modern global market is to pursue new and innovative technologies. That is our comparative advantage and we would be wise to exploit that.
I couldn’t agree with you more. That and more bloody subsidies for Western EV car companies and those that have/will promise to go full electric and/or hydrogen.
BYD will push down the price further because its has heavily invested in end to end supply chain , from mining, shipping, semiconductors, software, AI and battery.
As long as we have affordable price car , who care ?😂
You don't get it. Excuses will be discussed in advance and used for future policies to ban Chinese EV.
In a word, YES. there should be an inquiry into subsidies to European and American car makers. The playing field is level, it just the west doesn't like playing on it.

Indian people are very smart people, but the problem is that they dream to move or work for western companies while Chinese dream to work in china for Chinese companies.
India is not yet fully a leader of global south, since India follows the rules of the west, you can't be a leader and a vassal at the same time.
Russia and China are fully leaders of the global south, they don't follow the rules from the west.

Protectionism never helped any country, look at Argentina today. But in the US, even in 10 years GM leadership will explain to us that gasoline cars are better, because they create jobs.
This idea of overproduction is against the very concept of free market.
And it's the western, I mean more than anyone, who were calling for an action to reduce pollution but when this is realized why do they cry?
Because they simply cannot compete, China started investing heavily in this technology 15 years ago and now they are bearing fruit for their work...

Doesn't Telsa has a factory in Shanghai with the same supply chain advantage? Tariffs? Like anyone, people in China or Europe wants value for $
Electric car driving is a luxury experience, much quieter than ICE vehicles, and more convenient to own, with charging points in every house. The charging infrastructure outside of the home will mature in ~10 years, it’s ahead of its time, for now.
I own a Chinese flashlight, and it’s very clear, even from this small product, with bidirectional charging, that the Chinese are at parity with the best in battery technology, if they haven’t already eclipsed the world in battery technology.
Politicians talking about tariffs against a country with almost 20% of the world's population (at least 1.4 billion people) is actually hilarious - yea let's see all your other export sectors start losing 20% of the world's market because your automakers can't play the EV game. Two can play the tariff game, and the one with the larger domestic market wins. Now who had 20% of world population again? 😂
China is also propping up Huawei in huge ways, including banning Apple products in government buildings and having its investments in Africa go to state interests (e.g. Huawei).
Huh. Norway has subsidies to help buyers offset the cost of evs. Eventually no subsidies will be needed.

Every government gives subsidies to their key industries. Airbus, Boeing, US and EU governments give subsidies to EV and green tech industries as well, maybe not as much as China. But there is nothing wrong with subsidies in general. Compete by giving your local companies more subsidies, not protectionist tarrifs.

Btw, both Chinese car and European cars are down to half price in China than in Europe
We need to think differently. It is not that Chinese cars are cheaper, but that European and American cars are more expensive. For example, Cartier gold rings are several times higher than the international gold price. You can say that Cartier rings are good and you are free to buy them, but you cannot say that other people's gold rings are not gold. Apple phones and Teslas have been lowering their prices in China, which shows that they were operating at huge profits in the past.

Why ?
For regions like Hong Kong that do not produce EVs, we are delighted to import what are known as overcapacity EVs.
As for those regions producing EVs, you have two options: either increase your productivity or raise tariffs to protect your auto industry in the short term. However, in the long run, good luck to you.

Tesla got subsidies from the Chinese government. VW and others are getting bilions in subsidies from the US, Canada and EU. In any case, the thing is that in China you can still by an entry level car. And the question should be why VW, GM and others can sell their cars in CHina much cheaper than in the US or EU? And as for EV's it is way more than 30% of Chinese sales now because there is the infrastructure to support it.
