The best football interview I've ever seen. Well shot. Well edited. Great insights. Brilliant in every way! Congrats to all involved in making this video. Also, a great question to end a great interview! As a mixed-heritage coach, my opinion on Chris' question (on the reason why a lack of diversity in coaching) is that the answer is multifaceted and multidimensional... There's family/cultural pressures which drive cerebral talents (who'd otherwise succeed in coaching) into alternative & higher paid industries where respect (a non-negotiable aspect in many diverse cultures) is more easy to come by... There's perceptions by diverse coaches of the wider culture of English football as being a place where often exclusionary, discriminatory & deliberately oppositional practices happen in subtle & plausibly deniable - though not indetectable - forms; designed, it often seems, to deliberately scupper diverse coaches who often bring new perspectives... There's the difference where coaches are sometimes expected to turn a blind eye to discriminatory behaviours (no matter how infrequent) which cumulatively become impossible to ignore (eg. when raised concerns are ignored), and how this causes diverse coaches to choose between their conscience and their love of coaching... There's the 'uncertainty over dependency' aspect where diverse coaches understand that success in coaching depends on a deep and dependable network and that the deeper the network, the more likely the odd individual within that network may prove susceptible to cultural hang-ups/hangovers... There's the fact that limited opportunities are further put at risk by the potential weaponisation of rules & regulations which while well-meaning can be abused by competitor coaches for advantage... There's the lack of opportunities - can you imagine how dispiriting it is to hear/read the story of Dwight Yorke's failed attempts to get into coaching despite having the right qualifications!? If a guy who played at the highest level and won it all, if he can't make it as a pro coach, then what chance the rest of us?... Then there's the poor pay to top it all off... And that's before getting into the darker side of the cases of abuse of power by powerful figures in the game locally, regionally, etc (rarer though not yet extinct)... Who would put up with any of this for a pittence?! And why should they?! Want to increase diversity in coaching? Compete with other industries that offer a smoother ride on the non-negotiables...

Wow what a great insight into modern day football. I am 61 and was brought up in a different time football wise. I watched this on a Sunday afternoon and can say it was very educational. More of this please.👍
Brilliant interview. Thank you. Fascinating stuff and especially so because Chris is obviously very articulate, intelligent, and highly credible (he knows this world as well as anyone!)
Honest and insightful. It does make me think that the path to being an established premier league player is in a small part a lottery. One observation how many dads with 5 sons have 4 that have been through the academy system
I have 2 sons one went pro the other went to the police, one of my sons has 2 boys one with a pro academy in scotland, so I have an interest in what Chris Robinson said in this video. I must say it is nice to see and listen to someone that does not sit in the fence.I wish him all the luck needed in his future endeavours.
Wonderful insight & very well thought out questions. Love these sorts of deep dive videos with true professionals who can step back & give real unbiased insight. Interviewer did great to keep it flowing nicely without cutting Chris off👏🏼🤌🏼
It’s ridiculous the amount that have passed through at times as well. Pulisic Olise Rice Musiala. Guaranteed most prem teams have a starter out of Cobham.
The way he is speaking about Sancho, Alli and Homes is cold. That is the personality you've gotta have to be in this job. Just to say 'no' to a lot of people and be emotionless inside is an indication of a top scout
Foreal - I think the clip has been a bit misunderstood on social media tbh. He's not saying that they're bad players by any means - he is saying that he decided they weren't the best fit for Chelsea at the time. Was he right? One to debate...
@@RisingBallers not only them top lads. All the guys that were rejected, I really loved that he underlined the fact that it is not always about your footballing skills, but your mind and personality. Seeing Chels boys bottle it at Wembley says it all. And.. I am a blues fan too

"Cold"......"emotionless".....with all due respect...this is a very Old Skool way of dealing with young players. As adults in sport, we also have a duty of care to these young people. I know football is a business but at the end of the day, the kids are not machines. They are people with thoughts and emotions who are still trying to learn and find their way in life. This is why a lot of the ones that don't make it end up with mental health issues and/or become suicidal. As a collective, we must address this "meat grinder" style of producing quality players.
I've said to so many young guys that once you reach 17-18, and first team isn't really on the books, in terms of games, just go on loan. get the game time. This vid is really good. great perspective.
Great Advice as a father of a Asian Academy Cat 1 player taken away some solid advice. Resilience is the one as a failed footballer myself lack of Resiliency and family support is main factor for Asians, however as a 2nd generation British Asian our kids have total support and equal opportunities now. No one will stop you if you good enough, racism is no longer an excuse.
Loved this video! Super insightful and interesting to learn even more than I knew. I’d love to hear more about scouting stories too and to see if there has been any major progression in terms of recognition and respect for scouts?
It easier to scout fast & strong players from age 7&8, tbh grandma could spot those boys, but difficult to scout football intelligence at that age, we might get bunch of Rashford & saka in the end, but missed all the pirlo & kroos in the process
This might sound crazy but I have been asked to go on a trial for Chelsea 3 different times but I could only go to the development centre and I have been on a full Brighton trial but I live to far away to go to Chelsea but now I’m going into u 12 s and I hope I can sign and go on to play pro
To answer Chris’ question. It is lack of diversity in decision making roles in football clubs. There’s an conscious/unconscious bias in football clubs on how Managment and players should look, behave, speak etc. At the heart of it, football is an old boys sport. It’s about who the decision makers can relate to because it’s more comfortable for them. A good player and a “good lad” together counts as the perfect player/manager to recruit. “Good lad” meaning they have similar background and understanding of each other. Perfect case study is QPR Academy. At the time, Tony Fernandes (Indian Owner) Les Ferdinand (Director of football). That club was the most diverse I’ve seen in staff and players. Most South Asian players I’ve seen at club to this day. Because they’re recruiting who the best is for the role and doing their best to wipe away any bias. Answer is, football ex-pro’s/aspiring coaches should aim for other roles that just management. They should be taken seriously for decision making roles like Les. More like a “money-ball” approach to recruitment Holding senior staff accountable to make sure they diversify as best they can by looking at who is best in class in the industry and getting them in. No matter race, sex or anything else.
Chelsea had an African as director of football 20 years ago. First top league team to have a black captain. First top league team to have a black manager.
Hey Chris, can you take scouting director for indonesia to resiliency of half blood player. i think its new challenges for you. the first step i think should be contact the president association of football he’s name erick tohir former president of inter milan
Great interview. I think for Black coaches many maybe just don’t decide to do it. Because they feel they won’t be given the chance to start off with. We need a handful of really high profile English black manager success stories to help this. Asian players I feel is because as a culture football isn’t as pushed or Marvelled. Education is placed much higher than sports often.
“It took us years and years and £10m a year to realise that sometimes players develop at 18 or 19 and other players who developed early that we thought were the best players ever actually fall away by the time they’re 18/19when size and physicality are no longer a differentiator” 🙄
Academy level coaches and scouts are essentially cut from the same cloth as used car salesman and salesman of dodgy time shares. Or ppl who predicted that the internet would fail by 2001. Or the ones who overlooked companies like Amazon or Uber when they were small. Untalented, unintelligent and there by virtue of privilege rather than “talent”
There is no doubt at all that idiots like this bloke would have passed up the opportunity to sign Busquets Xavi Iniesta and Messi if they had been in England as kids.
Being a Chelsea fan the amount Chris mentions Conor Gallagher shows how important , expecially to this Chelsea team, he really is. If the owners sell him then they truly dont understand the club
Mmmmm yeah under roman we didn’t bring in any young players until we had to with the transfer ban they were a source of revenue for Chelsea bringing in a player for nothing and selling them for a profit. Youth players getting more of a look in now if you ask me
I feel for managers. How can you put some faith in the youth when the game is driven heavily by results, expecially Chelsea managers who never last more than two seasons.
Really interesting after a few mins already. I recommend the Michael Calvin book “No Hunger in Paradise”. Can send it to someone if interested. The main takeaway being that a vast majority are just there to support the ONE who could make it.
Not only is Sancho not good enough for Chelsea, he isn't good enough for the premier league. When Sancho comes up against good premiership defenders he gets found out, he's fine against defenders in the Bundesliga who are slower and not very good.
Entirely agree, and even in Bundesliga his best form was only when coming off the bench against tired legs. He's quick with his feet but not very quick between the ears
Chris' question about the lack of British Asian footballers in academies is an interesting one. Outside of the obvious issues of general attitudes in this country, I think a lot of it comes down to immigrant mentality - as Chris points out, a lot of jobs in football are inherently insecure and a lot of British Asian kids are 1st or 2nd gen immigrants, whose parents will have sacrificed a lot of start a new life in a new country. It's only natural that they'd push their kids towards more stable careers than football, especially considering committing to football is obviously going to come at the expense of more traditional academic qualifications. Plus I think there's a big cultural clash there. So much football culture in this country is still so intrinsically linked with drinking alcohol. It's not really compatible or welcoming to anyone who is a practicing Muslim, for example.
Really good points man, thank you for taking the time to answer. So do you see this gradually changing and more asians are likely to enter the football world?
@@RisingBallers eventually, IMO. Here in Australia we've had plenty of ethnic South Asian families for some decades now, but talents of South Asian origin have only begun to break into the Aussie cricket grassroots in the last 10 years or so. That's entirely down to attitudes, whichever way you choose to characterise them. Attitudes take a while to change.
Do you realise that it isn't racism as to why South Asian players are few and far between? They love cricket for starters. The parents don't want them to be footballers, they want them to be doctors or cricketers. The majority haven't been anywhere near good enough to be professional let alone semi professional. Stop with this indoctrinated bull. If there is any racism involved, it's from the parents of South Asian kids who don't want their kids involved in football
Boehly and current directors won't let a person like that continue working at the club...any person has a tie to the old world class ChelseaFC, they will make their life difficult at the club so you end up quitting... Chris Robinson is world class scout but Boehly and his puppet director would look for employee from Brighton... they want to be a feeder club and make as much money as they can...no more trophies more top 4..welcome to middle table position...Chelsea will be in 14-10 position on the table from now on...Boehly is just like Bezos does not care as long as the system is making money, they won't care about fans...
Well, you know, if scouts and coaches really look at that 3 points it would be great. But in fact they are looking only for big guys that's why we have poor quality of football in low divisions
Who should we interview on Perspectives next? 🤔
Darius Johnson
Charley musunda &jaiden Clarke who I believe will be playing championship or prem in the next two years proper player

To answer Chris’ question. It is lack of diversity in decision making roles in football clubs. I'm here, all I need is an opportunity. My coaching ethos centers around philosophy, culture and structure.
A few months down the line now and a Mr Cole Palmer might disagree with your comments…..
Wow, you are wrong
Should've asked why he let Mbappé go 😂
Chris' question about the lack of British Asian footballers in academies is an interesting one.
