    I used to make the mistake of rooting cuttings in soil. I always add drainage like pumice or perlite.. but Enid is right about soils on the market; majority are SLUDGE. Especially anything labeled as “garden soil” or “potting mix”. Straight up mud once you water it. I ended up switching my cuttings to 50/50 vermiculite/pumice! The best!! Keep it misted, won’t rot this way - and gradually increase light, nutrients and then repot. I find many plants can THRIVE in solely that mix, of vermiculite & perlite. You could add a pinch of soil or coco coir I suppose.
    This is also a great method (and long-term way) to grow succulents, dracaena, sansiveria, euphorbia, plumeria and many other plants that love drainage.

    Didn't know you could put them right into the dirt I was always told to put them in water til roots begin to grow.. good information thank you

  • @christmassnow3465
    @christmassnow3465 4 года назад +2

    I have found that rooting in water is good enough to initiate root formation quickly without the need to control humidity. I then move them to a coco-perlite mix with orchid bark. I don't let the roots grow too much in the water and my mix contains coir instead of peat. Peat will degrade too quickly and becomes water-retentive and muddy.

    I'm so happy to see you featuring Philos! That's my favorite genus.
    Enid is very popular on the PlanetPhilodendron FaceBook group. She mentioned adding bark to your medium. In our group most of us consider bark chips to be *Essential* for any rainforest plant's medium. It's about mimicking the natural environment. The tall trees there are always shedding bits of bark to the soil, and those Philos that sprout epiphytically are certainly clasping onto bark. My medium is 25% bark chips.
    A little Activated Charcoal is also helpful (_never_ the barbecue kind.)
    Coir is also good, perhaps better than peat for holding moisture while allowing drainage.
    I'll be posting this to the group immediately.

      So lumpwood charcoal isn't good? Or are you talking about the barbecue charcoal that has chemicals on it?

    • @johnjhill3
      @johnjhill3 6 лет назад

      "Lumpwood" is a new term for me. The one reference I read mentioned that it is supposed to be natural, but I would still avoid anything meant for grilling. There is no gov't requirement to list fuels that may be added to grilling charcoal.
      Activated Charcoal chips can be found in garden centers and florist shops. It is highly pure carbon from wood with billions of tiny pores. The pores trap contaminants and toxins. Get the type with chips of about one half inch to an inch in length, not the powdered form.

    @terrismith1997 5 лет назад

    I let my new plants acclimate for 2 weeks unless they're soaking wet when I get them. Lowe's uses water wicks to saturate plants. But I have a question on repotting, should you remove the old soil down to bare roots before repotting? I use coco coir, worm castings, perlite and orchid bark for a good drainage mixture. Do I fertilize right after or wait? Is fish emmulsion enough? I found liquid worm castings at Wegmans that says to use after watering. Is fish emmulsion and worm castings considered fertilizer,?

    • @tb564
      @tb564 5 лет назад +1

      Bare roots is not necessary unless the roots look very compacted. Another reason people bare root is because of pesticides which could affect beneficial bacteria and fungi in soil. Summer often keeps the root ball intact if not root bound. There is also something to be said about incorporating some of the old soil when repotting to retain the beneficial bacterias the plant is accustomed to. I believe using liquid fertilizer (fish emulsion) immediately after transplanting caused me to lose plants in the past. Liquid fertilizers whether organic or not is an immediate release formula and if the roots have been heavily disturbed or the plant is sensitive the fertilizer will burn the roots (I usually wait 2 weeks after transplant to be safe). However, well cured compost, worm castings, bone meal and other dry fertilizers do not burn roots as they are slow release. A fertilizer I always incorporate into my potting mix and garden is the slow release fertilizer Dr.Earth Organic (An all in one fertilizer that comes with beneficial microbes as well as many trace minerals and nutrients that help to establishing a healthy microbiome. This microbiome can also help plants adapt better to stresses such as transplanting.) There are other organic dry/slow-release fertilizers that will do the same thing like the Espoma Organic line Summer uses. By the way it sounds like you have a very high quality potting mix and the fish emulsion would definitely be enough to fertilize as worm castings and the good aeration will establish a healthy microbiome. However if you run out of your fish emulsion you could try one of the Neptune's Harvest fish emulsions with added nutrients like seaweed (I use the tomato, veg as an all purpose)

    Summer, a few questions since I just started :) With regards to potting mix, I currently used a mixture of Coco Coir 50%, 40% Perlite and 10% Organic Compost. Do you think that is good enough?. I do water with fertilizer during the growing season. Lastly, whenever I buy plants from the store I automatically repot them since I'm worried they might have gnats or bugs in them. Is that a bad idea?.
    Again, thank you for all the informative videos. :)

    • @stefpix
      @stefpix 5 лет назад +1

      I'd add orchid bark. The Better Grow bags come in different mixes, some with also chunky perlite and charcoal, or bark only. There is a Miracle Gro orchid mix which has too much peat for orchids, actually, but it is a little cheaper, you can get that and mix it with perlite. I read that vermiculite is actually not good for a mix as it tends to "caking". I believe coco coir is slightly alkaline, and peat is slightly acidic. I am wondering if it could be of concern.
