  • It was pouring with rain as we came over the Houwhoek Pass and turned off to the Houw Hoek Farm Stall. This farm stall was voted best farm stall in the Western Cape for 2021. It was amazing to see how neat this place was, not a bottle out of place. Even the veggies looked great! Then we went over the road to the Houw Hoek Hotel. I found myself feeling nostalgic while I was walking through the oldest hotel in South Africa. I could just imagine the people and stories that could be told from days gone by. Again, we arrived at our destination in the rain. Loadshedding was in full force to welcome us as we stopped at Aanhouwen Cottages. So we decided to go and explore Elgin and the surrounding areas to see what we could find. After speaking to a gentleman at the Elgin Station we went to the Elgin Railway Market and found out that it was open the next day and that a steam train would be visiting. We made sure that we were there when the train arrived! It was great to see an old steam engine again. The sounds were just fantastic! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #aanhouwen #elgin #elginrailwaymarket

We also love the whole steam punk vibe, especially those tall doors. 🚪 They went to a lot of trouble.

Yes! We couldn't believe our luck when we heard the train will be stopping at the market on the day we were there. So happy that we could see and especially hear one again, it's got such a unique and distinctive sound. Glad you enjoyed it too! 🚂

I would've loved to see the Appletiser factory, I think that will be very interesting to see! 🍏🍎 The farmstalls in this area are absolutely amazing, one could browse around for hours and empty your wallet very quickly! Glad you enjoyed!

I live on trains, using them mostly for transport to work, but none are as charming as this.
'Elgin' is the last name - pronounced like GIN you drink - of an old friend who died of ALS during Covid, and it's been a bittersweet memory.

We've always known it's the oldest hotel in the country, but the first time that we actually turned off and went inside. So much history! The Elgin Valley is covered in fruit trees and vineyards, all in their autumn colours now. Too beautiful! 🍁🍂 I was just as excited to see the steam train, can't even remembered when last I saw one.

Oh loadsheding old friend you never seem to disappoint lol. Another reason I miss in South Africa is the rain there is something calming about it. Rain in uk doesn't give you the feeling as SA. You know a South African will braai in any kind of weather lol they always make a plan. Loved the farm stall and the old train and the sound of it. It's so rare these days, one has to have the appreciation for it. Clever idea flying your drone over the train👍. Also loved the view over the farm seeing different shades of green and yellow from the trees and plants etc

😁 We do love pies and we've had them before, they are delicious indeed! We live in Strand and can buy them at some places here too, so we have them from time-to-time. You've got me going now, I might just get one tomorrow! 👌🏻

Glad you got to see the Railway market all open. Went there a couple weeks ago. Just around the corner, is a honey company. Take your own jars. I took my mom. Realised Railway Market was just around the corner. Arrived just as the train was leaving. You could see it had been busy though. Still neat.
Houwhoek Farmstall.... yeah same, but next time I am in the area, will definitely pop in.

I turned to this episode after you've told me that this is where Adrian Kuiper has an apple farm. Remarkable that there are not even 100 houses in this town! I looked up the history and it's named after Elgine Herold, who died in the area of a snake bite in the 1800s.

Hi. The wife and I are watching all your videos, one by one! You guys have inspired us to also do a bit of local travelling in our trusty Hyundai Atos 🙂 Just one thing, right at the end of this video, there is a cottage standing all alone with your car parked infront. Can you please advise where this place is and possibly the name of it? Many thanks. Seaton Nolan

I'm very happy to hear you're ready for some exploring of your own! 🚙😁 If you're referring to the drone shot in the outro of our video, that was where we overnighted on Hillside Guest Farm outside Uniondale.

HOUWHOEK - What is the meaning of the name?

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  2 года назад +4

Good question! I actually asked on the day of our visit, but no-one knew for sure. My research tells me there are three commonly-accepted meanings of Houwhoek: ⛰️
      1. Because the pass was long and rough, the animals had to rest frequently and the wagons had to be 'held' ('hou' in Afrikaans).
      2. The Hessequas farmed with cattle in the region and 'houw' is the Khoi word for 'cattle', therefore it could mean 'cattle corner'.
      3. The name refers to 'ter houw komen' which means 'to rest', after negotiating the inclines of the pass.
