The way you dramatized Hikaru’s game was great, I legitimately was on the edge of my seat. Well done Levy
I watched live but I still couldn’t wait for this recap
Right!? Even my wife who isn't a chess fan finds his videos entertaining. Love the energy.
I was convinced hikaru lost like 6 times and was convinced he saved it another 4 or 5 times
I had no clue what was gonna happen
@@dantethunderstone2118 bro same 😂😂😂
Gotham should mention time pressure though, cause it was a big factor. If Esipenko had time, he would have won.
3:00 Levy turns into a Formula One car once again
Woah that's unexpectedly accurate
When someone holds a game like this, it's not wrong to call it lucky. But it would be wrong to call it only lucky. There is a lot of skill and discipline involved to find the best moves in such bad positions, when you know you are basically lost, but it's too early to resign. I didn't expect Hikaru to win the group in classical time format, and even though I'm not rooting for him, it's exiting to see him play. He has surprised me and a lot of other people positively.
Amen
Yes...and in this case the kid cracked under pressure and blundered it away. It will be interesting to see what episenko does to recover.
Bro Naka didn't play the best moves when defending, Esipenko just choked and played worser moves. Kudos to Naka on winning the group though
Same, im not a fan (my man is Rapport) but it was exiting to watch him braking expectations.
@@AthosJosue Rapport seems cool too
Huge congrats to Hikaru! Takes a pause from classical and is already in the semi-finals.
Hope he can go all the way

@@epicwolves125 and, the Rams almost choked yet they’re in the Super Bowl

Esipenko had him... It was very close
Crazy that Hikaru’s game was basically Armageddon with classical time control
yup lmao "all time great"
Some silly mistakes by Esipenko... even as pointed out Qe6 was winning the end game! e6 was always the important square!
@@elcid451 dude if you are nervous you make mistakes. You would have lost after 2 moves against hikaru
@@cero8885 Lol.. sorry I wouldn't lose Esipenko position period! You can project your own insecurities all you want. He missed Qe6 to win the ending and again after the time control in the queen ending! The reason being he isn't that good in queen endings. You could forgive his Rf8 move!
@angelfire, okay mr.supergm
If I was Esipenko I'd be so furious with myself, he must've known he was in a winning board state nearly that entire time. Didn't even make the worst moves just not the right moves to follow them up.
True. If he had more time he would win that game... Time killed him
@@predragdjedovic Dude like Hikaru he missed it, he even took alot of time for "bad" moves. It was a crazy game for sure
Esipenko had a won game then proceeded to play very weakly like an 1800 ELO because he couldn't SEE a direct win. And in the queen ending he didn't know what to do allowing Hikaru counterplay with his d pawn. After Hikaru played Qc5 it looks like Qe6 for white was winning!
@@elcid451 You're talking like all those moves and lines were super easy and we all should be playing in the grand prix tournament.
@@mirjamkarmas7331 No.. not at all.... the reason why chat said Hikaru needed to play Qf7! instead of Qd4?? was because if white got in Qe6 it dominated the white squares protecting the white king which would go to h3! And Hikaru would have to move his queen back to a7 which wouldn't save the game. White would just check with Qc8 followed by Qb7 and black has no checks.. game over! Not that difficult to find if you how to play chess. Maybe you are just a weak player. Esipenko didn't play like a GM he played like he had an 1800 ELO in the ending
Rapport should just get an automatic invite to every non-championship event. His opponents probably love playing him because he isn't the most solid, but viewers love watching him because he isn't the most solid. Sometimes the opponent proves why he's bad and sometimes he throws people off enough that they crumble. It's high drama either way.
Just a quick note on the Aronian game: Actually it was Grischuk who pointed out that the moves have to be repeated more times because of the castles thing. From watching the situation at the venue one could have guessed that even the arbiters did not notice this. This was quite interesting to watch.
Holy cow I wonder how many times someone has drawn a game where they were down 7 on the eval...in CLASSICAL
Many, but rarely on a GM level ;)
super gms blunder away winning positions quite often in time trouble, it's not just hikaru who has saved games like this
Time trouble kills everyone
I had completely winning positions (over 9 eval) against FMs but blew them by missing one move. Of course this was in 3 minute blitz. Low time really sucks
"you have to choose your opponent wisely... like Sean O'Malley" who else appreciates Levy's mma references?
Love them lol. A lot of us jiu jitsu guys also love chess and obviously mma, so it’s nice to see the worlds collide

Yeah show hikaru's playstyle of calculating by finding the wrong positions first, then trial error on the possible ones. Just like when he does puzzles

Rapport clutching it out after dropping that first round is really impressive. I'll be rooting for him in the tiebreaks!
In the interview afterwards Hikaru was told that the computer suggested Knight to b6.

Very good analysis, making the games seem cinematic in a way. Keep up the great work, love these GP videos!
Rapport one of my favorite players. But so is Naka. So that will be a tough one if they play. Easier when Carlsen's playing because then I just root for him.
Gotham should get access to the players after the match for interviews, it would raise their profiles also
OH MY GOSH. Levy you the best man. Great title and recap! I was so nervous the whole time.

Never thought Hikaru would play a Guess the Elo game
I mean both of them made big mistakes, but no obvious blunders like hanging a queen or something

Hikaru's game was insane! I watched the whole thing.
Apart from Levon, I doubt Magnus is remotely impressed by any of this.
Lol hard to impress a GOAT
well today was really mesy in general. I dont think he is not tho. Levon had the best performance so far, but I think there were some great games overall. Its not only about results... dont make early conclusions
levy you forgot to sing "Rook b1"(3´39"). For me it has the same energy as "dangour levels". It belongs to your signature sayings.
Great commentary on a really incredible game! Love your videos! Good luck making GM!!!
so hikaru after three years of not playing competetive classical chess comes back and dominates the best players in the game
I was watching Hikaru lose, but had to leave while the game was still going. I expected to see how he lost in this recap. But lo & behold, Hikaru makes it through to the next stage! There is a certain vicarious pleasure in seeing that even the best Grandmasters in the world can still screw up like ordinary chess folks. Of course, they "screw up" at a much higher level of screwness, but it still counts. Anyway, I like Hikaru and like to see him move forward.
I saw the eval bar and thought it was over, went back to work. Came back later to see the game and was amazed. What a save
Thank you for uploading daily. Really looking forward to each of your videos!
Great job with this video Levy, I felt enticed to watch more.
Crazy, how Rapport could win that dry, drawish game, insane endgame 👏
Hikaru should be appointed the US secretary of defense after that game.
Or appointed to more tactics training, considering a 2000 Elo player can spot Nb6 on a good day :P
@@DarkSkay I suspect it’s much harder to see Nb6 than people think.
Sure it’s easy to see our rooks get connected so if he takes our N we can safely take his N. That’s so easy I doubt that’s what Hikaru missed..
The issue is if he doesn’t take our N and instead plays Ne6 then he has gained an out-posted N in our throat while we have gained an en prise N. We can play Nxc4 but then our N appears to be in no-man’s land. It has no way to retreat. You then have to see that when our N is attacked by say Qe4 that can be ignored by playing c6 whereby when lose our N then we win his N.
@@RMF49 Yeah, the Ne6 line is the hard one, not axb6 as pointed out in the video, because c6 is a common pattern (attack the pawn supporting an outpost, here d5), but to work here cxd5 has to come with tempo on the queen that can capture on c4. Haven't checked with an engine... after Nb6 Ne6 Nxc4 Qe4 does the simple b5 work as well? After axb6 Nxb6 there is the idea Nxd5. And does Qe4 Rxe6 keep the balance?
@@DarkSkay Yeah, the tempo on the Q makes it all work. The calculation is not deep but the surface appearances make it easy for a human to discard the idea. Rxe6 is 2nd best at +0.3 for white and b5 is 3rd at +0.5 and gets followed up by c6 not Nxb6 f5 securing the outpost which is +1.6. Everything else loses.
@@RMF49 Well, considering (at least in the Qe4 line) Rxe6 is very obvious (since usually 'stable' N+2P > R) makes investing time into the Nb6 line more attractive - with more chances to spot the even better, nice c6 tactic.
But you are right, it's quite hard. Gotham only showing us the simple line ;)
For most engines Nb6 should be extremely trivial. How many milliseconds until they show it as main line on your PC? ;)
In many positions, when one lets an engine run for just 1 minute, one would need hours of manual analysis with a chessboard to get a superficial understanding of the depth of lines and quality of play.
Your breakdowns are unmatched Levy! The enthusiasm makes it very exciting 🙏🏼
Thank you for these video! Youre very entertaining and fun to watch!

I said during the broadcast that it felt like Hikaru was seeing ghosts. He confirmed that in his recap - both major blunders were because of previous games he lost.
So cool to see Hikaru make it through.
He has done a lot of entertaining since retiring, but the world were Hikaru qualified for the candidates in 2018(?) and continued on his pro chess career fully would've really been cool to see.
Just what I was waiting for. Couldn't have been more accurate timing
I was literally refreshing waiting for you to upload!
I'm not even sure if it was supposed to be funny - but in the first recap, the way you built up the tone of the poetry and magesty of needing to bring the rook back to e2 instead of e1, then endign with "I can't even pretend to understand the differnece" just made me laugh so hard.
Congrats to Hikaru! Insane game. Love the recap so much.
Tha last game really shows how playing for a win leaves you open to losing as well.
Damn you made this video fast as hell. I'm almost impressed by your efficiency xD
ps: it would've been amazing if you showed Hikaru's reaction when the interviewer told him about the knight b6 move. He just laughed and said "computers, what can I say", rightfully so. That was completely insane. As was the entire match.
Also, Bacrot looked absolutely devastated and emotionally crushed in his interview. But at least he laughed when the interviewer told him how stockfisk said he could've won.
Bro commentates a chess game like game 7 of the finals. Chapeau Levi, you are insanely talented.
Another idea I have seen in lower status player games. Find small imbalances in an otherwise equal position and either gain positional advantage leading to pawn advancement or tactical ideas with that pawn as a diversion. There is other ideas but the point is that when they do it it is genius, when we do it it's a blunder.
At @12:11 if Bacrot took on e4 with his knight he could have a winning position according to some engines. Would have loved to see you go through that line man, it‘s beautiful!
Nice recap, thank you

Great idea! If not both before and after then atleast show it always after games so we have a better picture of what is going on!
Hey Levy, if you could also very briefly show us each player's points at each round so we can understand why someone has to win a match, what happens if they draw... That would be very nice! For the next tournament, of course. Thanks!
there are many chess commentators out there but damn levy makes it exciting was waiting all day for this upload and it did not disappoint

Esipenko changed his mind at the last minute. Hikaru cut it too close.
