We did this for a family vacation back in 1972 or 73. We drove from Chicago to Louisville, Kentucky, loaded the car on the train and took the train to Disneyworld.
If I remember correctly, Amtrak has either 8 or 10 specifically P40’s set aside especially for the auto train. I think it’s 6 primary loco’s that do the primary runs, and then the other 2 sets are at each of the 2 auto train stops just as backup if the mains go down.
Thanks! You drop your car off before boarding and the Amtrak crew loads it onto the train. Cots and bedrooms are small, unless you buy one of the more expensive tickets. Don't expect to get a great night of sleep, and flying is definitely faster as well as more cost efficient as long as you don't require a car to be brought along. Overall I would only recommend the train if: 1) You're a train buff and that's what you like, lol or 2) You have to bring a car and can't fly. Hope that helps!
What a shame our rich country has such shameful train systems ...And if you are going to comment, don’t bother unless you have been around the world like I have to see real train systems light years ahead of this sad Government subsidized system. I mean even Europe is amazing. And Japan is like living in the future. This is the result of government subsidized programs. Over priced, rude employees with job protection and at the tax payers expense. Amtrak or (Amtrash, as we called it at the airlines) could be a real first rate system if it was privatized or the government did their job and made it right, but that is never going to happen because all they do now is have a vendetta to destroy the leader of our country instead of doing their jobs in the house. Not to mention, that they could care less because they fly home in private jets or commercial jets. Some take the train between BOS and DCA. Don’t you find it interesting that those sectors alone!, got the so called, high-speed rail system? It’s all a joke. Install tracks, put on high speed trains up and down the eastern seaboard and provide a real first class product and watch them come ...
@@floridianrailauto9032 Or 2nd Amendment, or low gas tax, or freedom to choose healthcare...etc. They can keep their fancy high speed trains, I'll keep my 4 mile per gallon restored muscle car and drive around this great country at my leisure.

If they don't have cab signals, and of course HEP, they won't . The RF&P sub in VA won't let them.
Nice video. Do you drive car on and off of train? How’d you sleep? Better than flying? Tks.

I wonder if the Lorton or Sanford Auto Train Terminals are hiring drivers to load the cars.
Probably, since there are so many people working those ramps I'd imagine they're always looking for help.
That's so cool!
Thanks Stephen!

Atlantic Coast Line They don’t have a freight problem, period!
DanBurt1968 respectively, your amendments have NOTHING ! To do with public transportation, therefore it is irrelevant.
