    I used to love singing. I used to be able to express myself confidently. Now I can’t because my voice becomes fatigued, and I constantly generate phlegm everyday, even after very brief voice use. It’s been this way for years now.
    I’ve been to ENTs, laryngologists, and even voice therapy many times. None of their offered solutions have helped me. They even injected augmentation gel onto my vocal cords which didn’t make a difference.
    I use straws, gargle warm salt water, do lip trills, but nothing helps. I also wake up every morning with a sore throat. I’m beginning to lose all hope.
    My voice always feels weak, sounds tired, and doesn’t travel very far without strain.
    Please help me.

    Thank you Katarina. When you say one should address the emotional part of a voice problem, what exact tools do you usually suggest? Psychotherapy? It is extremely hard for me to fully « accept and be ok » with my situation when I experience actual pain 80% of the time whenever I use my voice… thanks for all you do.

      Hi Eva, nice to hear from you again. It is different for each person but examples are simple breaching, meditation or mindfulness, expressive writing, cognitive behavioural therapy or more somatic approaches (somatic tracking is a very powerful technique that my clients do really well with), but it can also be hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, or some people really need medication for anxiety and depression, in which case they need to work with a doctor.

    I've had MTD for 5 years and every day I stress about it, worry what people think and say, and it has ruined my confidence. I sometimes wonder how much my emotional state effects my voice. Even when I am speaking "okay" I still think about it because I am so hyper tuned to any good or bad voice. Its exhausting.

      I absolutely understand how you feel because it is very common to be worried about your voice when dealing with MTD. I suggest that you either speak to a professional who can help you with your emotions part of the voice or start working on it by yourself. Some suggestions that work really well for my clients are setting positive affirmations every morning, some light meditation or mindfulness exercises, or so called somatic tracking. All these techniques will help you change your negative thoughts into more positive or constructive thoughts.

      I am sorry to hear about your vocal troubles. Vocal pain is a complex phenomenon and it is not just a matter of "physical" problem. Here is a resource where I explain how pain works and how to start dealing with it: www.vocalfreedomsystem.com/pain The good news is that understanding how pain is perceived in our bodies can help us overcome vocal pain.

    Katarina I have a question. My throat tightness is not under my chin or in the upper areas near the larynx. My throat is tight near the bottom of the neck, around the area where the neck begins to start going into the upper chest. In that area, it almost feels like there is a small pinching feeling or a knot. I can feel it when I swallow and it starts to hurt when I talk alot, esp on the phone. My voice sounds mostly clear and bright though. No ENT has found any vocal injuries or much acid reflux, but it has not gone away in 2 years. I am going to have my thyroid checked out. Have you ever heard of something liek this?

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Год назад +1

      I am not sure if I have the right answer for you but from my experience, the place where you feel tension is usually NOT the place where the tension originates from. I have many clients who point to a specific place on their neck and then we figure out that the tension comes from suboptimal head position or shoulders. Because it hurts most when on the phone, I suggest that you observe yourself while making a phone call. How is your body alignment? Do you use your voice differently? Do you breathe differently? How is your emotional state? The differences may be small but you are doing something differently that causes that tension.

    I couldn't agree more. I had a long lasting vocale fatigue and not being able to have any diagnosis was very stressful. hence my throat was even tighter. Thankfully I found your channel and got some peace of mind. I practiced massages, stood straight because my neck position was elongating slightly my throat whe speaking, and I tried to look at my phone and screens i a more uptight position, so far what helped me the most is the warming up + massages, the position correction and the fact that I was not alone and doctors were just being doctors, cashing out and not trying hard.

    Hearing this story made me cry. I have a doctor’s appointment the 16th for a consultation about seeing an ENT for consistent throat tension and soreness/pain that’s come on the last month. I am a singer and actor and am currently doing both as a job. I know it’s partially an anxiety thing but I’ve never had this consistent symptom before, unless my voice was just tired from speaking or talking unhealthily or too much. I know constantly stressing about it is making it worst, and access to talk therapy is somewhat difficult right now. It makes me sad that this can be such a long lasting thing but also hopeful that it gets better. I can even feel some tension release writing this comment. Fingers crossed I can get some solid answers and practice self-love 🩷
