As a man who has full, thick and black middle length hair, you have to go to a hairstylist. Barbers are great at making faded or short haircuts. They always ruined my hair until I saw Stephen's videos and understood the concept. So I went to the best hairstylist in my town and he gave me the best cut I've ever got. Perfect layered hair like John B (Outer Banks) or Timothee Chalamet. If you consider going to a hairstylist, show them one of Stephen's videos and communicate what you're looking for. @@punklover444 Actually yes. Instead of 15$ at the barber you'll pay between 50$ and 80$, depending on the hairstylist.

So thankful my barbers appointment got canceled last week. I’m in this exact situation where I didn’t know if I should go to a salon or barber. I will definitely be looking around for a hair stylist now that my hair is longer. This video probably saved me months of progress

I had a good stylist for years, who layered my hair. I often received compliments on my hair. After moving, I could not find a stylist who could layer. I gave up, and started wearing my hair short for the last 20 years. With the pandemic and lock-downs last year, I let my hair grow out. I went to my regular stylist and asked if he could layer my hair. He said he could, but he didn't do it. There isn't anyone I know, who I could ask for a referral (based on their own hair style). I spent so many hours searching reviews, etc. and found a salon that had stylists with positive reviews. I asked the person who answered the phone if they had a stylist who could layer hair. She replied that anyone could cut layers - that it was basic, cosmetology 101. I made an appointment with a stylist and on the day of my appointment, I asked again if she could give me a layered cut. She said she could, but she didn't. I am so frustrated, trying to find a good stylist. Salon Guy, do you take appointments?

I feel your pain! I moved and I had to find someone to do my hair. I asked for layers... none...she brought me back in and this time a disaster cut :(
I’m currently at 16 months of growth. Looking for layering. After reading horror stories of other’s experiences, it’s difficult finding a skilled stylist and understanding what I envision.
What I’m thinking of doing is sit at the lobby of a potential place is to observe the stylist in action. Think of it as an audition. Hopefully, I can find the right person.
Today I asked for layers and the dude literally said “show me a short haircut.” And he was someone who didn’t know what the hell he was doing and I explained layers and then he just asked me again “show me a short haircut.” My medium hair became a buzz cut in 15 minutes and now I’m just devastated with my other buzz cut friends who always dreamed of having the length I had. Man there’s just no one out there anymore.
The barber that has been cutting my hair since I was a little kid freaked out a year ago when I told her I was wanting to grow out my hair and have a layered cut. She has always cut a crew cut hairstyle for me for many years. When the covid started and when the barber shop was forced to close my hair grew longer and I like it and started embracing longer hair. I waited for about a good 6 months after the barber shop opened back and I told her I wanted to grow out my hair and I could tell she was being hesitant but she did do some layering. The next appointment she told me that my hair was not going to look good or work how I was wanting to grow it out, so I ended up changing to a hairstylist. It costs more but I feel more confident than with my barber about my hair.

@tossmeck2 yeah its very depressing when that happens especially when hair only grows up to 6 inches or so per year. I'm stilling working on my layering in the front but I think I have a better person helping me with it than before. Hope it all works out good for you in the future for your hair.
It's because if you grow your hair out, they make less money. No need to do a clipper cut every 2 weeks.

Same, the barber I go here in Houston is in a mainly ghetto area and when I asked my barber if he could do layers, everyone just kept asking “yo dawg wtf? You a female or sum? We don’t that booty bandit shit here” I got called out bad and never went there again, crazy how asking for layers is seen as feminine lmao.

As of writing this, my hair isn’t too long, not even past my eyeballs and my barber has always done a decent fade job for as long as I’ve seen him. I asked him if he knew how to layer since my hair is a little grown out now and he said that’s for stylists only. But Google says it’s something that all barbers should really know how to do. Maybe not all then? 🤷♂️
I've had this problem with my hair over the years. It is smooth and layerless. I tell hairdressers to cut my hair but structure it in layers, but I always end up unhappy and with a helmet on my head... my hair, even at 55 years old, it's fantastic, and I like to wear it like Kenau Reeves, but no one has ever cut it properly, anyway... I'll probably die without someone cutting my hair the way I would like...greetings from Portugal!

I have curly fine hair (not balding I was born this way) I’ve noticed that my hair sticks in flat clumps when wet and makes it seem like I have streaks of baldness… *should I get layers or is there anything else I could do to combat this?* my hair is up to my nose in length all around and my hair style is curly top with shaved sides… thanks
Before getting a haircut, my wife always go to the hairdresser and see how the hairdresser works and what the result is after the haircut. If she likes the result or photo of the hairdresser’s work, then only then do she sit in his chair :) Unfortunately, there is only one salon and several hairdressers in that salon fulfill her request in layers and she needs to fly to another country to get her hair cut there. (In Denmark they simply don’t know how to cut hair).

Question. So I always had short hair.. but decided to grow it out. It got long but it was all one size so I wanted layers. I’m just a regular dude who would go to a cheap Supercuts or great clips but when I went to get it layered at one of these chains the Asia’s girl cut my hair in maybe 5 minutes tops. It’s so rushed as I’m sure they are more worried about volume of customers versus a good cut. What do I look for when I want a good haircut that doesn’t cost $50 bucks. Honestly… $50 bucks to cut my hair is kind of crazy to me. What should I spend if I want decent layers and who do I call? I travel full time around in an Rv so I can’t get one stylist to always do it. But looking for a nice cut.

I've had both problems. Told the stylist "no layers, want long and straight" and she said "you have to have layers, you can't do that" so I left. 🤣 But the trouble was (she'd cut it before) she and many other stylists I've seen use the excuse of "layers" to give a crappy randomly chopped cut. SalonGuy's videos demonstrate clearly how to do it right and more or less evenly through out the whole head. Not a mostly one length medium cut with a couple of random horizontal lines in it. Sadly I think the franchises just don't give the stylists enough cash percentage to give a damn and even many self run shops just aren't willing to take the time to do a cut the way it is meant to be done. Just lazy crappy excuse laden work. And these RUclips videos show that there's no excuse. If you need to charge for the extra time fine but do the cut right damn it. 😤🤣

Why don’t you SHOW HOW TO DO THIS cut, instead of just TALKING? I am a retired hair stylist, had an excellent instructor. It is IMPOSSIBLE to find a stylist that knows HOW to layer cuts. Too many stylists are coming out of “stylist training “, that have NO CLUE how to give a good hair cut, much less a “ good layered cut “

Taper is very short layers is medium to long…
without product, my hair lays flat( it is straight and fine, medium length) would layering add texture to my cut and reduce weight, or would it make look uneven? i’m trying to transition to a messier style haircut.
Layering does reduce weight, makes the hair more fluffy and gives it a flow, lightens it (weight).
Even with straight fine hair, you can always get a slight wave out of it, you just got to get a decent medium length cut e.g a middle part or christian bales haircut. Then you can use a blow dryer and seasalt spray and get that look
Alot of the time you just got work your hair around with your hands.
