- Jair Bolsonaro, a congressman who has praised Brazil’s past military dictatorship, has become the country's president.

This video's title has been updated to reflect the results of the election.
Brazil just held potentially the most important election in its history on October 28th, 2018. Two candidates faced off; Fernando Haddad represented the Workers’ Party, which has been in power for much of the past two decades. His opponent was far-right congressman Jair Bolsonaro, who won the election in part by positioning himself as a political outsider with no part in Brazil's sweeping corruption.
With soaring crime and rampant corruption in government, Brazilian voters showed they are eager for change - a desire Bolsonaro effectively capitalized on. But with his deeply offensive rhetoric toward minorities, many Brazilians are worried about their safety and the future of their country's democracy.

There are many things outside the internal issues that have led to his election. One of them is that the "markets" (big investors or the capitalist system) prefered him since he has a liberal reform agenda to give more benefits to the rich and privatize companies as well as being open to sell our natural resources. His future finance minister will be a guy who is a PhD in the University of Chicago. Ever since he has been high on the pools, the brazilian stocks (Ibovespa) have been rising and today the stocks went even higher as he got elected on Sunday. We Brazilians voted on right-wing candidate Bolsonaro because we don't want to become a communist country. Also, Bolsonaro is one of the very few politicians not accused of corruption. The international press is completely overlooking the real reasons for Bolsonaro's popularity.
O Brasil nunca será comunista, nunca! PT é uma decepção, mas nunca pregaram comunismo, e sim um capitalismo mais igual! Sem falar que quem tem o apoio militar aqui é o Bolsonaro.

"Had he been elected, Brazil ran the risk of becoming like Cuba"
So, being exploited by the US and after kicking out their pro-American dictator, having an embargo put on them by the butthurt US?
Good to know you don't understand the situation yourself if you call Haddad a "Communist" while using Cuba and Venezuela as examples. You know, Cuba is Socialist, and they are doing better than you are even though they have been embargoed for decades and have been victims of US intervention attempts trying to cripple their government and install another dictator. They still manage to have one of the lowest child death rates and one of the highest life expectancies in the Americas.
And Venezuela...you know, having 70% of companies privately-owned isn't really Communist. It's not even Socialist. It's just that Venezuela nationalised oil companies, and you know how much the US loves their oil.

As a Brazilian I have to say Bolsonaro wasn’t elected just because of the homicides or because we want a dictatorship. When vice president Mourão said the line that appears in this video, he wasn't referring to a military coup alike to 1964.

I lived in Brazil in ‘77-‘79 (I’m American). As Americans we were scrutinized harshly. All of our incoming and outgoing mail was read. We used to make audio tapes for relatives in the USA. Dad was clear about what we were allowed to say or not allowed to say in those recordings. I was 10-12 years old so I didn’t pay attention to the politics. Brazil was an example to me of what a country with ZERO middle class represented. That always stuck with me.
"Far-right" candidate??? Everything that is not Marxists/socialist is far-right now? What you call far right I call common sense.
@GamingTSC • This dude is a free market conservative. Far right would be fascism and clerical fascism, neo Nazism and various other extremist ideologies, but not conservatism.
Brazil had the integralistas. They were the true far right.
@GamingTSC • Well I am a political scientist, and I disagree with that. Francoist Spain was a highly authoritarian personal dictatorship. The Falange was secondary compared to the power of the Caudillo.
He used his dictatorial powers, to consolidate power, by uniting the entire right wing - everyone from moderate Carlists to fascists. That regime didn't have a founding ideology that guided the nation.
In most real fascist regimes, conservatives were seen as reactionaries. Perfect example would be the Nazis: they persecuted even hardcore conservative monarchists because they didn't conform.
Conservatism is a _very_ broad term. Some forms do resemble extremism, but I wouldn't call it fascism.
@GamingTSC • It's not?
Redistribution of wealth, nationalization of industries, division of profits, prohibition of land speculation, abolition of unearned (work and labour) incomes, expansive state run medical systems... None of the sounds like socialism to you?
@@Snobbishbumpkin The Third Reich wasn't communist. Hitler directly stated, that his absolute goal was to wipe out Marxism in Germany once and for all.
And just saying "the communists are against a certain group of people in society (aka the capitalists) and the Nazis are against a certain group of people (aka the jews), so that means they are basically the same" is just wrong. Every ideology does to a certain degree include fights between different groups of people, but that doesn't mean that all are the same.

Edward, I get all my news about South Africa online only. It is a "sin" to talk about it on the clearly fake TV news stations in the US. They act like South Africa doesn't even exist. Wow.
Believe me we have thought of that for years, but it is not easy to turn tail and run. Many overseas countries are hostile to South Africans and going to some is unthinkable, like the UK because of the situation they are in. For the moment we have to live like prisoners in our homes and going out to work or shop is nerve - racking as you are constantly on alert at traffic lights, in malls etc because of the epidemic of hijackings, armed robberies and cash-in-transit robberies. There has been some progress made by Minister Peter Dutton of Australia and the Russians, but I am sceptical. The economy is in a bad way, state owned enterprises like SAA are mostly all bankrupt, unemployment at 28% and rising, petrol and tax rising and I could go on all day. Compare this USA where Trump is doing a good job - cutting taxes to stimulate economic growth and rapidly falling unemployment rate.

@@kassiogomes8498 do you know brazil has some of the highest crime rates in the world? One of the most corrupt governments?
@@anton_s1 Yeah I live in Brasil. But what I am saying is that Brasil is not an eastern country.
You can't say: "we westerns" because Brasil is, in fact, a western country.
The problem is: Brasil is a third world country, so as any other third world country has corruption and crime issues.
So the problems in Brasil aren't like the ones in Iraq, Afghanistan, and others eastern countries, the people aren't afraid of leaving their houses because there are bullets everywhere.
The situation in Brasil is more like the one in Mexico or Argentina. The cities have more population than they should have it, and the city/state governments can't contain the crimes properly, they aren't prepared for it. It's like living in New York but everywhere is the like the subway.
If you live in a city with less than 2 million people in Brasil the crime rates are very low, it's like living in the USA. The capitol of Brasil called DF has a HDI of 0.936 (HDI level of a first world country).
So living in Brasil isn't the same as living in an eastern country.
