On February 24th, Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a “special military operation,” but the scale of the attack shows this is a full-scale war that has already caused more than 100 casualties and forced more than half a million Ukrainians to flee their homes.
Ukraine and Russia’s conflict goes back to 2014, when Russia invaded and annexed Crimea and Russian-backed separatist forces took over parts of southeastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. But to understand the full context behind the invasion, it’s important to go even farther back, to the time when Europe’s current-day divisions began, and see how that shaped Europe’s power balance today.
To understand the current conflict’s history in less than 10 minutes, watch the video above.

Correction, March 3, 2022: A previous version of this video stated that NATO was brought to Russia's borders for the “first time” in 2004 when Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania joined NATO. That was incorrect because Norway shares a border with Russia and has been in NATO since 1949. We’ve corrected that line at 3:36 to emphasize the importance of former Soviet republics on Russia's border joining NATO for the first time.
We've also clarified that this is one of Europe's largest wars since World War II. We value your feedback in the comments and appreciate you bringing these points to our attention.

BTW, this may be a small point, to speed up the video a bit, but here's something many in the west don't get about the 2013 protests: when Yanukovich declined to sign the EU deal, maybe a 1000 people (mostly students) took to the streets. when he brutally cracked down on those students, that's when hundreds of thousands joined them, this time demanding he leave the post. the display of dictatorship was the real reason for the scale of the protest, not so much the EU deal.

in the late USSR there were many repressions and after Stalin, if you spoke about the ukrainian position, you were sent to prison in Siberia. • @ardiansyahnugraha9688

Few points: one of the biggest gas reserve is in Crimea so Russia tried to take control in afraid Ukraine will become rival, Ukraine tariff on gas pipeline to Russia so the reason to built NordStream, Oil reserve near Donbass Region, another oil reserve in Western Ukraine near Transnistria (Putin backed regime in Moldova). And water shortage in Crimea.

Russia will have multiple pipelines operational in the next few years without going through Ukraine (assuming they continue building them), the gas reserves are the bigger story. In his speech last monday (21.2.2022) he said that Ukraine were a country by the grace of Russia and lost their sovereignty due to corruption. If a country loses his subject-status in international law (kinda the "countryness") there is no more protection by the norms of international law in particular the prohibition of force layed down in Art. 2 UN-Charta. This stance of Putin on sovereignty has absolutely no basis in present international law. If this may become the new standard no small nation is safe anymore and we re back in a neo-imperialist system. This is truely shocking ! :/

I have to say something about the notion that this is the biggest war since the WWII, which has been said in many news services on TV and across RUclips. What about the wars between 1991 and 2001 in the former Yuoguslavia? Weren't they big and bad enough to be deemed as a worthy reference? Yes, it wasn't an attack from foreign countries, but it did change the map of Europe, then several new states camed out from those wars.

Without wanting to downplaying what happened in Yugoslavia, I think this is a completely different order of magnitude. Not so much in casualties as we speak, but because of the number of countries impacted and the economic warfare that is currently happening. The yugoslavia war was messy and horrible for the people involved, but it was contained (and technically a civil war). This is an invasion with the potential to move into WW3.
I am aware that such statements are technical and perhaps semantic and thus do no justice to the (former) Yugoslavians, but it is why people see this as a bigger war than what happened in Yugoslavia.

NATO supported ethnic session directly in Serbia, by that logic it should join Russia now and attack Ukraine.

Putin signed "Minsk agreements 2014" (to end of war and donbass must be Ukraine) and waited peace 8 years.
    What about this:
    - Merkel (German president): The Minsk agreements were needed only to "give Ukraine time" This allowed the country to become stronger in it`s future confrontation with Russia.
    - Hollande (French president): Yes, Angela Merkel was right about that.
    - Poroshenko (Ukraine president): This document gave Ukraine eight years to build an army, economy and a global pro-Ukrainian anti-Putin coalition.
    - Zelensky (Ukraine president): As for Minsk as a whole, we will not be able to implement it like that (7 february 2022).
Summary, They (Germany, French, Ukraine) did`t want peace, they built army for future confrontation with Russia.
    - Mykhailo Zabrodsky is a former commander of Ukraine’s air-assault forces says: “Crimea is not only possible, it was something that was being prepared for 2023”.
Summary: Ukrainian army wanted attack region of Russia.

No, this is not a lie invented by Russia. It's true that there wasn't a legally binding agreement, it was only given verbal assurance, provided Russia recognized Germany unification. But it's still one of the biggest disagreements of the last 30 years because even people involved in these conversations had contrasting views. As an article of the famous German Der Spiegel states, "Roland Dumas, who served as the French foreign minister in 1990, would later say that a pledge was made that NATO troops would not advance closer to the territory of the former Soviet Union. But the U.S. secretary of state at the time, James Baker, has denied that any such promise was ever made - a claim that some of his own diplomats, however, have contradicted. Jack Matlock, who was the U.S. ambassador to Moscow at the time, has said that "categorical assurances" were given to the Soviet Union that NATO would not expand eastward"
Also, from the Guardian: "The following day Chancellor Helmut Kohl, ambiguous about Germany remaining in Nato after unification, also told Gorbachev “naturally Nato could not expand its territory to the current territory of the GDR”. The promise was repeated in a speech by the Nato secretary general on 17 May, a promise cited by Putin in his Munich speech. In his memoirs, Gorbachev described these assurances as the moment that cleared the way for compromise on Germany".
I could go over and over with my independent research on this.
The bottom line is that, if there were no pledges whatsoever, it's very interesting that there have been many speculations on this ever since, and some of the people involved confirmed the exact opposite.
Nothing has been written down, that's for sure, but at the same time diplomatic commitments are extremely important in international politics. This is how we ended the missile crisis for example. From an international politics point of view these discussions are crucial because they show a willingness to compromise and to not cross each other's red lines.
