This is my first video about something not related to Megaten. I don't plan to change my content, this was just a little experiment I did for Halloween (I was a bit late). Next video will be Last Bible 3, I'm wrapping up the scripting right now. Hopefully you enjoy this little change of pace - feel free to suggest other games you'd like me to cover if you did - and check out the description for a link to play this game.
Considering you did a review on books for a series I haven't played more than 3 hours of total and I watched all of it, I welcome your hour(s) long uploads diving into whatever niche thing you found.
The suicide not happening because you distract her is absolutely how it works. Suicide is typically an action that you build up to, and with regards to depression, having anything at all that tears you away from the crushing reality (such as needing to get an item back) takes some of the pressure off. Additionally, it can be assumed that the person in that picture is her dead brother, which would build her commitment, because if she believes in an afterlife, she’d be able to see him again, and if she doesn’t, she’d take comfort in knowing that she doesn’t need to suffer any longer.

@@josephwebster2319 7 Months later and i can personally vouch for this, unless you're playing Competitive Pokemon, though that's because you're playing against another Human so such notion is to be expected.
The final boss must have been so confused to be defeated by a kid throwing a tantrum, someone crying out to another deity for help, and someone else laying down some sick beats
To save the overweight guy (Mitsuru), you need to use Push on the gas chamber door to get back on the other side, to find him laying on the ground. To save Sae, you need to use the log from earlier before engaging in the fight to save her from a falling ceiling. To save Mizumi (why would you?), you have to go to where he took the picture (in front of the Hathor statue in the hallway) and look up. There's a female monster in the middle of capturing Mizumi that you must defeat.
akemi nakajima is the protagonist of a few games and novels that started the megami tensei franchise - he's a pretty terrible guy who has no issue with killing off loads of people to benefit himself
OK the only thing that you missed was the whole situation with Mitsuru Koeiji. The whole point of his character is kinda a statement about unliked characters. None of the party notices that he goes missing right after you pass through the Gas room, but because most people wouldn't use him, they won't notice he is gone until right at the end. That is why the foot stepping on him is low-key terrible. If you save him, he remarks about how nobody usually likes him or notices him. Pretty sad stuff.
Yeah, I wanted to mention that as well. Currently watching the vid and when Marsh mentioned "Breast Fire" I was like "Oh damn that is a flippin' Mazinger Z reference!" Glad to come across a fellow person of culture.
Yeah, I thought the same. I'm pretty sure that it's a reference to the Go Nagai manga/anime. Still not really sure why the dude would just shout that when he gets frustrated. Maybe just some mega nerd.
The core idea of ‘no punches pulled’ is what RPG maker games so important, and so interesting Even more so than regular games, they’re like a look into someone else’s psyche, and when that reveals their deepest fears, you get the most visceral horror games you could find
There's something about these Japanese computer games that really fascinates me. The beautiful pixel art, the 90s anime aesthetic, the crunchy electronic synths, the lack of barriers of what can and can't be depicted, it's all so mysterious and creepy.
You can save Mizumi the journalist by standing in front of the female statue in the picture and using the "look up" ability (the other statues are all male). You find him being hanged and then you have to fight a naked woman monster that he's implied to have also tried to force himself on not realizing it was a monster. Mizumi mostly seems intended to fill the role of the token unsympathetic characters you see in lots of horror movies, which I thought was a pretty interesting dynamic for a potential permanent party member even if it means Mizumi isn't a very complex character. When the creator of the game talks about "doing things you can't get away with in a commercial game" having a playable character like Mizumi with no real identifiable characteristics other than "is a creep" had to be one of those things he was talking about when he said that. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but I loved the boldness of it either way. I have also used all the party members in battle so I can say that Mizumi is also one of the stronger party members from a gameplay standpoint, although the game is really easy so unless you are using Sae or Saori who both kind of suck the party members don't matter much. One of his attacks is called "binding" which has some pretty nasty implications. Also Mitsuru the fat guy has a special move called "fart" that inflicts the choking status. Experimenting with the ridiculous special attacks was the best part of the combat for me. Really carried the simplistic combat for me, which sounds kind of weak but since the game is only like 3 hours long I think it's good enough.
Loving it, thanks for the insight and having "MonsterDong" letting everyone know all this makes it even better. Now I can't stop wondering "how does farting can even make mummies choke ?"... Well outside of the pharaoh that is, it's craking me up.
Feels bad, I also couldn't save Sae, but managed to save Mizumi. If you save him, he gets off totally scot-free at the end of the game too. I honestly like that saving him doesn't make him reflect on his ways and improve or anything. If one were to try to go for the "best" outcome, it can be argued that it's better to just let him die, and that's pretty interesting cause usually saving everyone you can is pretty much always best.
We need more characters like Mizumi. Also, I think you should check out the Bokurano anime, it has some intersting characters as well, one similar to Mizumi.
I know it's fiction, but the idea of a crew using explosives on one of the pyramids is just incredibly funny when you think about people watching them from the Pizza Hut adjacent to them in real life.
Hate how these kinds of indie horror games have fizzled out over the years at least in favor of mascot horror. They always manage to bring something new to the table or get experimental and I like that. Speaking of experimental, glad to see a non-MegaTen video on the channel! I mean yeah I love MegaTen but it’s nice to see something new.
Imma be honest: I want more of these non-Megaten related vids that yet still retain the atmosphere of the series. The music placement also elevated the experience tenfold.
"BU-REAASTO FIRE!" is a reference to Mazinger Z, a super robot franchise by none other than famous mangaka Go Nagai who also made Devil man, which may have inspired *some* (if not all) of megaten.
Wow, I'm really impressed with the death scenarios in this game. The choices look to be presented pretty organically and logically too. This isn't even mentioning how great the game looks. RPG maker games are so special. I think the only dante 98 games I've played are Azusa 999 and Clockwork, but the limitations of the engine breed incredible creativity. Thank you for your deep dives!
reminds me of Sweet Home. starting with a rag tag bunch of misfits that could die at anytime really brings an intresting take to the gaming platform, but it's understandable when you want to make a game that's not too hard-- let's say like NES Friday the Thirteenth that everyone doesn't like it. i mean hell, imagine a world like that. i sure can't! this game is sweet!
3:39 Funny that you mentioned the ASCII Corp. contest from 1998, since there's another RPG Maker horror game from that same contest *which actually won the 1st place,* getting a port/remake to PSX in 2001: _Palette (aka _*_Forget me not -Palette-)_* The original RPG Maker version has an English fan translation, the PSX version does not
I *really* doubt a comprehensive uncensored review of Demonophobia is ever possible on a platform like RUclips. Would be cool though - for all the blatant guro/loli fetishism, the game has interesting and very bleak lore to it, and its release history+side material are arguably more fascinating than the game's contents.
It's pretty interesting that an obscure RPG game was kind of based off of a real life tragedy. It still looks like an interesting game. Maybe I'll play it one day. Thanks for the rec Marsh.
Oh boy a new Marsh video! Edit: 23:40 Breast Fire is a Mazinger Z reference. It’s an attack and the boy is controlled by voice command so the special attacks must be yelled to be used
I LOVE how the background images are specific to each encounter and add art to the enemies. It looks like a manga panel. It's so simple, yet so amazing. I wouldn't have guessed this was an RPG Maker game, it looks like a SNES game with how polished it is.
Peret Em Heru is an AWESOME indie game. It really shows that if you have passion and an interesting enough story it doesn't matter what tools you use. If you're looking for more non SMT stuff I recommend Linda Cubed. It's got some INSANE plot points, like one of the main antagonists being a serial killer dressed like Santa Claus.
i'd like to see it just because everyone coming back to life as a "mummy" so to speak was interesting. being that every one but Rin is Japanese; it seems they've got some form of Japanese horror monster tied to who they are; and how they died.
The opening segment is spot-on as the introduction for this game. And don't worry man, most of us probably gave RPGmaker a try as well, it's been a thing since its existence. Even famous mangaka gave it a go to make RPGs of their manga or at least made valiant tries about it, everyone has a story to share. Though when it comes "hit" RPGmaker games, I think the earlier ones, doesn't matter if they were japanese or western, are the best because everything after a certain point in time, maybe 2006 with the rise of other design platforms that lead to the explosive rise of the japanese indie scene for a short while, it seems like the people who make RPGmaker games and RPGmaker horror stories just want to copy Kedouin's Corspe Party and Kikiyama's Yume Nikki or just Earthbound because fuck it I guess, gotta copy these but let's be a bit pretentious on top of it. Meanwhile, the early works of Kedouin and especially this game came from an era where it was common for the Sega Saturn and Sega 32X to have sex, naked boobs and gore in their games, it was common for the PC engine to have porn games that were extremely hardcore back in the day, one of them being Kedouin's inspiration for Corspe Party in the first place and he pushed that envelope even further. And here comes "Makoto Serise", probably naming himself after his favourite Fire Emblem character and making an actually good RPG horror game with scares and scenes that really couldn't be found in mainstream games at the time and Illusion wasn't ready at the time to shock the world with their games, so his contribution shouldn't be underestimated in the japanese independent space. The idea of using the journey to the egyptian underworld and the guilt trip of the characters you failed to save as a player as last-minute bosses and how horrifying it is to trudge along, is quite something wherein if it was made today we'd end up with something far inferior than this version, sadly. All of that, alongside a very decent battle system for an indie game at the time and in a stage of the RPGmaker program that was unwieldy to most people that didn't study programming or if they didn't take up gaming creation as a hobby or as a way to pay bills, which was surprisingly the way a lot of the japanese industries veterans begun, by doing a work they never had any sort of diploma or PhD for and instead using their knowledge of their actual occupations and passions to make games. Makoto seems to fall into that category, at least by eyeballing his game, since it carries the same air as Yuji Horii's early games, back when he was studying for literature school or Kojima's short stories and programming goofs while he was in the economics university, before enrolling into Konami. And the art is great, the PC-88 and PC-98 had such an amazing toolkit for making pixelated art and despite it being amateurish compared to the composite shot-esque images that artists made around that time for their games, Makoto's work is still extremely good for an amateur, especially for someone who claims to have made the game in a year and a half. Far above the competition in all of the fields. I also like how the characters have subtle nods to other horror characters or horror/monster themed characters, like Ushio and Tora's girls in Nogisaka and Ichikawa. And that's it for the main takeaway on the game, sorry it got so long winded again, haha. The rest are just general notes and ramblings about the video : Tsuchida's rant on the archeological comitee ringing true even to this day is sad. And horrifying, probably more than anything else in the entire game. Him also giving some big Goldsmith vibes is hilarious, I wonder if Ryukishi7 played the game and based Kinzo a little bit on Tsuchida instead of the random gundam villains. As for the pyramids, they are surprisingly much cleaner than people expect, speaking from experience. Giza's also a lot less slimy or wet despite the chilliness and humidity it has. It's also nice how Makoto did some research on the area and finds fun ways to connect the rivers around the Giza pyramid area, even making up underground lakes in spots that it would make sense for them to be there. 13:27 : Hey now, going by 90s anime tropes, that backwards baseball- sorry, I meant to say "yakyuu" - cap gives Ayuto some bick dick shounen chad MC energy and a free ticket to cameo in Konami's baseball all-stars. 23:31 : Breast Fire is an attack done by the Mazinger series of robots made by Go Nagai, who is also a very prolific horror and erotica writter. And Hino is based on one of his Violence Jack survivor characters. Mazinger in general is very popular amongst kids in Japan, even SMT has some references to it. The whole game in fact is very much close to his horror style, where insane slapstick happens before the imminent horror hits, a style of horror that was popularized by Shigeru Mizuki's Gegege no Kitaro, a manga that influenced how Nagai would handle levity in his horror works. This style is also found in Yugioh's very early chapters, where the horrors the Pharaoh unleashes on his victims are undercut by school hijinks and extremely percy antiques by the lads before some psychotic killer is set on fire by his own gun in front of a 2500 year old pharaoh. 28:30 : HA! Nice Indiana and the Holy Grail reference. Though it's also a very nice egyptial lore reference, given how people were judged in the world of the dead. 36:20 : Nice subtle hint that Sae is from Okinawa...not that her complexion alone wasn't a dead ringer for it, or her exotic name but the general quasi-karate / ryukyu martial arts reference helps. 49:46 : That was honestly my favourite part of the whole game, that batshit creativity that was ushered here for the game, that ties so perfectly to egyptian myth, pharaoh lore and all that was just excellent. The whole thing about how pharaohs are gods on earth, how they actually are preserved eternally compared to the mortals and so on. Beautiful. 51:32 : Even if Serise or Mizuho had any connection to the tourists, they probably were influenced due to how tragic the whole event was, at least for the japanese side. It has to do with their culture etc. etc. Sadly, the Luxor massacre may have been huge for Japan at the time, having unsuspecting tourists killed through such an attack but for most people in Egypt it was just one of "those" days sadly. I remember when the local news talked about the event and the adults just didn't even have any reaction to it, anymore.
Nah only the saturn had a few official official h games. Whatever was on the other consoles was probably unlicensed. Pc98 and early windows had all that shit tho
@@thatitalianlameguy2235 If that's the case then the MSX / PC-Engine had a lot of risque games as well, you could find naked breasts and after-sex scenes for games in official PC Engine magazines at the time, from the games. If they weren't straight up h games, I'd be impressed.
Damn, I wouldn't have thought this crusty-looking game on 1998 RPG Maker software could capture the tension and human drama of survival horror. Just goes to show how innovation can really lead a team to surpass technical limitations. This was a blast, Marsh. Also, Kyosuke is basically the Akira Miyamoto of this game. Best character, hands down.
Great vid, hope it also does well. It may have not been SMT, but the spirit and feel of the deap dive into old, obscure piece of gaming history is still present Hope to see more gems like this
So Rin's death... You really dodged a bullet there, that one is one of the most brutal in the game. She may be a jerk, but she does not deserve to go out like that. To save Sae, you need to prop up the ceiling first before attacking the Restrainer. Something funny: If you save Mizumi (why would you), he immediately starts begging Ayuto to go back to the pyramid with him at the ending. Ayuto appropriately responds by slamming the door shut.
Honestly, after getting her backstory, her being a jerk kinda become more tolerable. Imagining knowing her backstory after her death makes her death even more tragic
I know you had trouble getting this out in time for Halloween, but thank you for persevering and putting this weird lil thing out there. Love your vids!
The "Breast fire" thing is a reference to Mazinger Z: one of the first mecha anime of all time created by the same guy who made Devilman. It's one of the titular Mazinger's attacks, which shoots heat out of its chest.
Just as I've said once in a comment section under one of your Megaten videos: the way you talk about these old games in a very chill, but passionate and fond way, with some light humour and comedic exasperation at times, made me absolutely addicted to your content, and I was as excited to see this video from you about a game I've never heard of before as I was about videos on the Megaten franchise (which I also haven't been the most informed about prior to finding your channel btw) Thank you Marsh :)
I SCREAMED. I dont think ive ever seen anyone dedicate a whole video to this game. I played it once with an emulator and was never able to get it working again, which really heightened the mystique for me lol
i haven't even watched the content of the review yet, just watched the intro - and i just want to say i really, really appreciate you making these deep dives on weird games nobody is talking about. whenever i see you do a playthrough of a bizzaro game like this, it motivates me because it reminds me of how interesting games can be, and what people can achieve even with so many limitations
PC-98 my beloved... I would not be displeased if you covered more stuff like this in the future! I love SMT as much as the next guy but this was a really neat departure from the usual.
That mummy fight was probably my favorite part of this game, it really caught me off guard. This was a really neat look into a great obscure little game
I'm pretty used to horror. At least of the western flavor. I can probably count the times I genuinely felt unnerved in a western horror game on one hand. Japanese horror on the other hand, is in a whole other ballpark. They really know how to make you feel uneasy or uncomfortable, especially in those RPG Maker games. Though I definitely need to try this one out.
Something other than Megaten is absolutely welcomed Marsh. Glad to see you're spreading out, and can't wait to sit through a 1-2 hour summary of Last Bible 3.
I recruited Saori for the Pharaoh fight and made it a cakewalk. She has a skill with no cost that inflicts fear which paralyzed the boss during the whole fight, he didn't even attack once
i remember seeing this game being recommended to me two years ago on youtube, played it myself and went "damn, we need more coverage of this game" thanks for lighting another torch for this game, honestly an experience that is worth experiencing on every ending and scenario.
For the sake of spoilers, but from what I remember: (Edit: Forgot Sae!) You can save the fat dude by heading back before going down the stairs. You can save Saori by keeping her picture. You can save Sae by using the plank before engaging in the Restrainer fight. (Yes, the plank you see right after escaping the Toxic Gas trap chamber.) You can save Jeepers Creepers by examining the female horned statue and looking up. The professor and Kuroe cannot be saved. Still, you kind of get a "good" ending by saving Nei and Yoko, so all's well ends well. Right?
awesome, super cool to see you here - a lot of people have suggested doing a video on the game and i've been reading a lot about it recently. hope to get into it pretty soon
@@MarshSMT I've been watching your videos for a good while now, it's good material to have on background when drawing stuff for the game. A bit surprised to hear people recommend F&H here, it's so niche. But a nice surprise ofc. I can give you a Steam key for the game if you want. The game definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea, so obviously I'm not expecting anything in return either. Just do with the key whatever you want.
hey if you don't mind I'll gladly take one, feel free to dm me on twitter or send it over to my email (marshofficialpt@gmail.com). I've been meaning to play it for a while now! Looking forward to it
I discovered RPG Maker horror games a few years before they all just started being ported over to systems. One of my favorite creators had the handle Housekeeping on the forums, he recently released his first commercial game, Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass which is a criminally underrated Earthbound homage.
rpg maker was a good chunk of my high school days. i remember all the games you showed at the beginning. i'm surprised this one slipped by me. can't wait to give it a go.
I paused the video to do a playthrough of this game and was totally worth it. Solving the puzzles to save everyone was so satisfying. Been a while since solving a puzzle felt great in a video game. Pretty cool to see that if people died you fight them while escaping instead of joining your party. Definitely going to have to do a second playthrough some time. Edit: When I say everyone I don't know if you can save Tsuchida or Kadoe.
Man, you're entering into my childhood here. I still will say that Sunset over Imadahl is the best RPG Maker game with the best writing. Janky engine, but man. I also remember loving The Blue Contestant. My memory of most of these games is fading, but those two still shine because of thier writing.
As someone who participated and worked in translating RPG Makers in my language this is actually pretty nice to see. The RPG Maker hype died down, but it still has a special place in my heart Thank you very much Marsh
Its impresive seeing you still keep up the same level of quality on something so different. I really hope you continue to cover more niche games in the future! It was entertaining all the way throught and now I am looking foward to trying this out!
This is one of the main reasons why I love RPG Maker games, man. Limitations be damned, in the right hands someone can very much make a masterpiece if they put the time and effort and this is clearly no exception. Definitely going to give this a download- haven't emulated PC-98 games in years (last time I did was to play the first five Touhou games lmao) but I'll give it another go to play this, for sure.
This was so much fun. I know there’s an entire world of RPG Maker games out there that get largely ignored, so thanks for highlighting one here for a change of pace. Thanks for another awesome video!
I hope this video bangs with your audience! It would be great to see these kinds of videos for other games you play outside of SMT. I watched the intro and now I'm gonna play this game for myself before I watch the whole video 🗿
Games like these remind me that you absolutely don't require a AAA game to have a good experience. Thanks for sharing this (possibly) hidden gem with us.
Oh my Goodness, another Marsh!!! I never thought I find one! Youve randomly appeared on my home page and it was a great surprise. Keep up the great content man, do the name proud :D
Awesome video!!! It always amazes me how many absolute gems are hidden in the RPG Maker world. Definitely wouldn’t mind more videos like this, love your style of covering games!
You convinced me to play this game before watching the video, and I loved it. Never would have checked it out without this video, so thank you. Also, Sae Otogi died on my playthrough, but I noticed you could pick up the log that propped the door shout. I couldn't figure out how to use it, but I imagine it was supposed to be used to keep the ceiling from falling on Sae.
Thank you so much for reccomending this game. I had to go off and download it straight away. Such a cool little game. Absolutely loved the style of audio and the enemy and character designs were fantastic. Awesome experience!
Love that even though it's not SMT related, you kept the Marsh trade mark of talking about an old obscure game that most likely only a few people have played.
Not sure if anyone has commented about this yet but the game really gives me the same vibe as Sweet Home on the NES. A group of people stuck on one place full of traps where almost everyone is playable and can killed. However Sweet Home is less forgiving since whenever someone dies, they stay dead for the rest of the game. Both are pretty similarly with how there is a lot of puzzle solving, some of these even being able to kill your partners, making the game more dificult. I would love to see you give it a try one day since you loved this one so much. I surely will give Peret em Heru a try, curious to see how my playthrough will end. Cheers Marsh, was another great video!
I've just finished playing Peret em Heru, and what an experience it was. No doubt I would have never known about it without this video. I'm glad I went into the game blind before watching your video as suggested.
This game was super cool to learn about. Absolutely worth the watch and the wait when you were having issues uploading it. Happy late Halloween Marshalls Department Store
Just wanted to let you know I barely found this channel last week and marathoned all your reviews, so glad someone's going over all the more obscure SMT games 😭I never heard of this one before til now honestly, just downloaded it!
This game sounds SO COOL! Thanks so much for bringing this game to my attention. It stayed in my head overnight and I'm still thinking about it thanks to your review. I love horror titles with choices like this and hearing about them. Update: Your video actually inspired me to play the game myself this morning! It really was a a good time. There is so much foreshadowing leading up to a number of the choices. I had a good time making them even after watching your video. I had everyone live (except Soji Mizumi). Thanks again and I hope you branch out to other great, obscure dark/horror RPGs in the future.
I know your channel is about Megaten, but please make more videos like this one and GU-L. It's literally the best thing I can put to listen to while working and those games are super interesting to hear about. It's such good content!
This was really neat, despite being a fan of these sorts of games I hadn't heard of this one. I'd be interested to see you cover more horror RPG Maker games in the future.
I played the game before watching the video and really enjoyed the experience. To think something unnerving would have such funny dialogue haha. Definitely got more than what I thought, I'm so glad I got to play it! Great video Marsh!
I'm freakin drunk so don't get me wrong. But getting home after a hard night and frining some eggs with noodles while watching marsh is the best feeling ever
Well, this is a surprise! I've never seen you before, but I'm happy to see this little gem being talked about! I played it a few months back and I quite enjoyed it. Thanks, RUclips reccs. It was interesting seeing the differences in our playthroughs. We both got Sae and Mizumi killed. I believe you've been told how to save Mizumi already, but for Sae, it wasn't about beating the restrainer fast enough. Remember the log holding the gas chamber's door open? You were supposed to prop that next to Sae BEFORE fighting the restrainer. The log doesn't last long, but it gives Sae just enough time to get out of the way after the restrainer dies. As for the rest, I immediately realized the overweight man was missing. In fact, he ended up becoming my main companion throughout the game. He's surprisingly good, and I just enjoyed the idea of bringing the random fat guy, of all people, along for most of the adventure. I also held on to Saori's photo, though I don't recall if I figured out the game's logic or simply wanted to see what would happen if I were a massive jerk towards her. Salvation, as it turns out. On the other hand, the necklace thing flew over my head completely, and I was still bitter over Rin's terrible attitude, so I went the other way just out of spite. I immediately regretted my choice, but it was far too late at that point. I think the moment I remember the most vividly of this game was when I was going back through the pyramid, and after fighting Yoko and Mizumi it hit me that Rin would be waiting at the very end. The idea of having to face the revived corpse of the child I got killed by being petty was... unpleasant, to say the least. This was even reflected in the dialogue. Ayuto and Kyosuke stopped to talk for a moment upon entering the room. Having fought a number of former allies already, they knew what was coming, but it didn't make it any easier - for them or for me. Doesn't help that she has what in my opinion is the most horrifying of the fights. A truly unnerving little moment that was only possible due to the game's branching nature. Anyway, that was a fun video! I enjoyed the style of the narration and the little bits of humor sprinkled around. I'm not much of a SMT fan, but perhaps I'll check out some more of your content. And yeah, you're right, Tsuchida best character.
A sufficiently spooky game for a suffciently spooky post-Hallloween review. I hope you end up expanding what games you end up reviewing in future as this one was pretty enjoyable watch as always.
Played the whole thing in an hour Honestly, the atmosphere is pretty good It makes you forget how simple the layout, story and puzzles are Like, you get reaaaally immersed into it Got to save everyone too, it was nice for the most part Thanks for showing me this game Marsh, you're cool
The algorithm somehow sent me here and I adore this sort of condensed playthrough that describes the experience of these obscure little games. Thanks for the vid.
This was great, I hope you feel more comfortable expanding into other games aside from SMT in the future You still have to review Ronde and Giten one day
Dude, the fallen party members coming back for a final onslaught as you're trying to escape kinda goes hard as hell? I'd be tempted to replay the game to see whether it's possible to save everyone and how that might change the exit scene, or if each character has their own post death scenarios to slow you down.
It’s really great to see you review smth aside smt. Your videos always have special vibe to me like listening to a good friend telling me about his favorite games. Keep up the good work, Marsh!
I don't know if you will read this, but I want to applaud your efforts for this video. It's amazing as usual but you went beyond your comfort zone and just killed it. Keep it up.

All the while, someone is frantically spraying their party members with first aid spray
I just finished my first playthrough and i saved only the creep and the girlfriend. Now i'll make a new run to see the new interactions!

Tsuchida very quickly ascended from Kinda Sketchy to Nakajima.
Can't believe an old ass japanese horror rpg maker game made me fail No Nakajima November
Nakajima WHO?
@@SaviourV Right?
@@makeitthrough_
No, seriously, what's the reference about?
akemi nakajima is the protagonist of a few games and novels that started the megami tensei franchise - he's a pretty terrible guy who has no issue with killing off loads of people to benefit himself
I love how his personality takes a 180 after you save him, even when he slips up back to his bad habits he corrects himself loudly. Cool guy imo
breast fire is a reference to the Mazinger Z series of giant robot manga and anime. It's one of Koji Kabuto and Mazinger's iconic attacks.
Yeah, I wanted to mention that as well. Currently watching the vid and when Marsh mentioned "Breast Fire" I was like "Oh damn that is a flippin' Mazinger Z reference!"
Glad to come across a fellow person of culture.
Fellow /m/en of culture.
Yeah, I thought the same. I'm pretty sure that it's a reference to the Go Nagai manga/anime.
Still not really sure why the dude would just shout that when he gets frustrated. Maybe just some mega nerd.
nearly shit my kegs when I first saw that, fellow /m/en working on translating old spooky Japanese indie RPGs. I respect that
@@Kopalex23 he’s just a nerd. If you use the Shout command in different places he yells a bunch of lyrics from Visual Kei bands.
The core idea of ‘no punches pulled’ is what RPG maker games so important, and so interesting
Even more so than regular games, they’re like a look into someone else’s psyche, and when that reveals their deepest fears, you get the most visceral horror games you could find
"The whole place was designed as a sort of gauntlet for someone to ascend to godhood."
We can't ever escape Megaten, huh?
Megaten?
This sounds also like Marathon Infinity.
Not your traditional god,but Citadel Station is too a gauntlet for Shodan to run wild as an artificial deity

Can't believe there was a fart move I missed
Loving it, thanks for the insight and having "MonsterDong" letting everyone know all this makes it even better.
Now I can't stop wondering "how does farting can even make mummies choke ?"... Well outside of the pharaoh that is, it's craking me up.
The fart choking status 😭😭
Imagine defeating an egyptian god with the power of hip hop by your side.
God and Hip-Hop apparently 🤣
Marsh is so skilled he could do a video on any topic and I'd still like it, do not feel yourself necessarily tied to Megaten, you rock either way.
Whatever sells...
Imma be honest:
I want more of these non-Megaten related vids that yet still retain the atmosphere of the series. The music placement also elevated the experience tenfold.
"BU-REAASTO FIRE!" is a reference to Mazinger Z, a super robot franchise by none other than famous mangaka Go Nagai who also made Devil man, which may have inspired *some* (if not all) of megaten.
>Some
Yeah, like Fist of the North Star inspired "some" of Jojo Part 1.
Ah, a fellow /m/an of culture
The SMT music you used actually supported the scenes well. Love you man
That part with the statues and Rin with Marsh going full on sherlock, man music can really elevate a scene to new heights
I will never stop talking about Fear & Hunger and Hylics, some of my favorite series (not rpg-maker games but in general) of all time.
A fellow Hylics chad. Claymation just WORKS with the vibe RPG maker games instill.
Hylics? It's kino
Ah Hylics. I enjoyed it... whatever the hell IT was.
No one ever seems to talk about Fear and Hunger
Fear and Hunger was so damn good. Hopefully Termina is a worthy successor.
3:39 Funny that you mentioned the ASCII Corp. contest from 1998, since there's another RPG Maker horror game from that same contest *which actually won the 1st place,* getting a port/remake to PSX in 2001: _Palette (aka _*_Forget me not -Palette-)_*
The original RPG Maker version has an English fan translation, the PSX version does not
Great game

You cant get more rare and obscure after this. The next lvl is demonophobia. Great content!
I've seen a bit of that one too, looks intense for sure
Oh god demonphobia

It's pretty interesting that an obscure RPG game was kind of based off of a real life tragedy. It still looks like an interesting game. Maybe I'll play it one day. Thanks for the rec Marsh.
there was originally supposed to be a subplot with mitsuru being a creep towards rin but it got scapped which is why he was forgettable
I've actually seen an LP of this, it was a silent full death run. Man it's cool seeing someone talk about it.
i'd like to see it just because everyone coming back to life as a "mummy" so to speak was interesting. being that every one but Rin is Japanese; it seems they've got some form of Japanese horror monster tied to who they are; and how they died.
The rest are just general notes and ramblings about the video :
Tsuchida's rant on the archeological comitee ringing true even to this day is sad.
This is an excellent comment, I really appreciate it
This comment just... Wow. Lot of interesting facts and insights
It may have not been SMT, but the spirit and feel of the deap dive into old, obscure piece of gaming history is still present
Hope to see more gems like this
So Rin's death...
Just as I've said once in a comment section under one of your Megaten videos: the way you talk about these old games in a very chill, but passionate and fond way, with some light humour and comedic exasperation at times, made me absolutely addicted to your content, and I was as excited to see this video from you about a game I've never heard of before as I was about videos on the Megaten franchise (which I also haven't been the most informed about prior to finding your channel btw)
Thank you Marsh :)
I love Marsh’s videos. But Dangit, I think I gotta sit this one out so I can actually play it myself. This looks directly up my alley.
The PC-88 and PC-98 are really treasure troves of games, if you know japanese.
It Doesn’t matter if marsh is talking about killing a minotaur in a tower or the rated r version of Indiana Jones, he’s just really freaking cool.
i remember seeing this game being recommended to me two years ago on youtube, played it myself and went "damn, we need more coverage of this game"
thanks for lighting another torch for this game, honestly an experience that is worth experiencing on every ending and scenario.
For the sake of spoilers, but from what I remember: (Edit: Forgot Sae!)
You can save the fat dude by heading back before going down the stairs.
You can save Saori by keeping her picture.
You can save Sae by using the plank before engaging in the Restrainer fight. (Yes, the plank you see right after escaping the Toxic Gas trap chamber.)
You can save Jeepers Creepers by examining the female horned statue and looking up.
The professor and Kuroe cannot be saved. Still, you kind of get a "good" ending by saving Nei and Yoko, so all's well ends well. Right?
A non SMT video? I'll take it! Crazy I haven't heard of this game before. Seems right up my alley. Thanks for shining some light on it!

Man, you're entering into my childhood here.
I still will say that Sunset over Imadahl is the best RPG Maker game with the best writing. Janky engine, but man.

Awesome experience!
iirc, saving the tour guide involves taking the plank of wood from earlier and using it to hold up the ceiling trap.
It's such a nice surprise to see a new video. This is just what I needed to relax after this tiring day. It's always a joy to watch your videos.
I've just finished playing Peret em Heru, and what an experience it was. No doubt I would have never known about it without this video. I'm glad I went into the game blind before watching your video as suggested.

Played the whole thing in an hour
Honestly, the atmosphere is pretty good
It makes you forget how simple the layout, story and puzzles are
Like, you get reaaaally immersed into it
Got to save everyone too, it was nice for the most part
Thanks for showing me this game Marsh, you're cool
This is probably my favorite video of yours now. Super interesting game I'm glad you talked about.
The algorithm somehow sent me here and I adore this sort of condensed playthrough that describes the experience of these obscure little games. Thanks for the vid.
Loved this gem of a game. Imma try it someday
This review with your humor is something else. Kudos
This was great, I hope you feel more comfortable expanding into other games aside from SMT in the future
You still have to review Ronde and Giten one day
Dude, the fallen party members coming back for a final onslaught as you're trying to escape kinda goes hard as hell? I'd be tempted to replay the game to see whether it's possible to save everyone and how that might change the exit scene, or if each character has their own post death scenarios to slow you down.
It’s really great to see you review smth aside smt. Your videos always have special vibe to me like listening to a good friend telling me about his favorite games. Keep up the good work, Marsh!
Marsh you’re my favorite RUclipsr. Been eating GOOD with all the content you’ve released recently. Excited for last Bible 3!!
I’m only part way through the video but you’ve outdone yourself again. I’m totally on board for any content you have coming up, smt or not
I don't know if you will read this, but I want to applaud your efforts for this video.
It's amazing as usual but you went beyond your comfort zone and just killed it.
Keep it up.
